"Bingbing, Bingbing!" Huo Shufen knocked on the door urgently.
Grandma Rong suddenly fainted and was taken to the hospital. Huo Shufen tried to call Rong Bing but couldn't get through, so she rushed over.
Rong Bing and Fu Jingchen were having so much fun that they couldn't stop.
"It sounds like my mom," Rong Bing said, panting. "The soundproofing in the house isn't very good."
Huo Shufen peered out the window. The curtains were closed, but there was a dim light in the room. Where had this girl gone so late?
She knocked on the window again.
Fu Jingchen grew anxious, sweat beading on his forehead. He covered the woman's mouth and sped up.
"It's out," the man groaned.
Rong Bing washed her face, tidied herself up a bit, and told Fu Jingchen to stay in the bathroom and not make a sound.
She put on a long down jacket to cover her uniform underneath and opened the door.
"Mom." Rong Bing deliberately yawned, rubbed her eyes, and pretended to have just been woken up.
Huo Shufen noticed that her daughter's hair was wet and her face was very red, and thought that her daughter had a fever.
She placed her hand on it: "It's not hot, why are you sweating so much?"
"Mom, you might have had a nightmare. Why did you suddenly come all this way so late at night? Couldn't you have called me?"
"If you can get through on the phone, come to the hospital with me quickly, Grandma is being resuscitated." Huo Shufen held Rong Bing's hand.
"Huh?" Rong Bing exclaimed in surprise, "Grandma is so healthy? How could this be?"
"Wait a minute, let me put on some pants." Rong Bing returned to her room, casually put on a pair of pajama pants, and rushed to the hospital with her mother.
Rong Tian paced back and forth outside the operating room.
My mother was watching TV peacefully that evening when she suddenly stopped moving and collapsed on the sofa.
"What's wrong with Grandma?" Rong Bing asked.
"She's still being resuscitated, Xiaobing. Grandma is old and could have a relapse at any time. Don't put your phone on silent. We'll be so worried if we can't find you tonight," Rongtian reminded his daughter.
Having done something wrong, Rong Bing could only nod.
The three of them stayed at the hospital until dawn.
At five o'clock, the operating room lights went out.
Grandma Rong was wheeled out covered with a white sheet, and the doctor shook his head, telling the family to accept their condolences.
He suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and could not be saved despite resuscitation efforts.
Rong Bing lay on the hospital bed, holding her grandmother's hand. She couldn't believe it. She hadn't seen her grandmother for only one day. How could her grandmother be gone?
It took Rong Tian and Huo Shufen a long time to react before they hugged each other and burst into tears.
Grandma Rong has passed away, without leaving a single word.
The morning sun rises slowly with the east wind; New Year's Eve has arrived.
The Rong family, however, was shrouded in gloom.
Grandma Rong passed away on a day meant for family reunion, and her body was placed in the hospital morgue.
Rong Tian was originally going to put up red Spring Festival couplets at home this afternoon, but now he can only hang up white cloth.
Rong Bing sent out notices of death to her relatives and friends, including Rong Yan and Fu Jingsheng.
——
Country K.
Rong Yan arrived late last night, turned off her phone, and planned to sleep until she naturally woke up.
Xu Nan sat in a wheelchair; since she fell ill, she had been sleeping for shorter and shorter periods of time.
"Keep your voice down, don't wake Mom," she said, looking at the children playing.
Rong Shiyu took the lead and made a shushing gesture.
At ten o'clock, Rong Yan woke up after a good night's sleep, opened her phone, and saw the message.
Her expression froze, and she called Rong Bing back in disbelief. How could such a healthy old man suddenly be gone?
Rong Bing's voice was hoarse. Who would joke about the life of their loved ones on New Year's Eve?
Finally, she asked, "Sister, Uncle is on his way home. When are you coming back?"
"On the second day of the Lunar New Year, I arrived home before my grandmother's funeral."
"Yes, I sent a message to my brother-in-law, but he hasn't replied yet. If you two want to be together, you should talk to him."
"He's in the country, Xiaobing, my condolences." Rong Yan hung up the phone and went downstairs.
She was even somewhat relieved that Grandma Rong was gone, so no one else would know the secret of her background.
"Mom," Rong Yan called sweetly, hugging Xu Nan's neck, finally relaxing her tense nerves.
"Ayan, is something making you happy?"
Rong Yan moved a stool and sat down next to her adoptive mother. She told her the news of Grandma Rong's passing. She asked her adoptive mother if she was too wicked, because instead of feeling sad, she felt that her greatest threat was gone.
Xu Nan held Rong Yan's hand and said with satisfaction, "That's right, kindness should have a bit of an edge."
After being comforted by her adoptive mother, Rong Yan felt much more at ease.
At noon, after putting up the Spring Festival couplets at home, Rong Yan took the children to the clinic.
The cafeteria has already started preparing dinner, including Chinese dishes, glutinous rice balls, and dumplings. No one expected that Rong Yan would be spending New Year's Eve in the hospital again this year.
They all stepped forward to offer their blessings.
Tiancheng.
Fu Jingsheng packed a few clothes and rushed to the airport.
If all goes well, he should be able to arrive in Country K this afternoon.
After checking in, the man waited in the lounge to board, and only then did he have time to check his phone.
Grandma Rong has passed away!
He called Rong Yan.
Rong Yan spoke calmly, saying that she had already received the news and that she would go back on the second day of the Lunar New Year. She asked Fu Jingsheng to go and check on things first.
Fu Jingsheng lied to Rong Yan, saying that he was also on a business trip out of town.
Upon hearing this, Rong Yan's eyes instantly darkened. She blamed herself and said, "Is it because I took Xiao Lei and the others away that you felt it was pointless to spend the holiday in Tiancheng, so you arranged a business trip?"
"Of course, what's the point of spending the holiday with my mom? Besides, she said she wanted to introduce me to someone."
"How are you going to compensate me? Next time, raise the price from ten million to one million. You're getting more and more stingy," Fu Jingsheng joked.
Rong Yan transferred one million yuan directly to Fu Jingsheng: "You don't need to pay anything. This money is for you to celebrate the holiday. In any case, Auntie has been good to me."
