Chapter 1: My life is miserable, and my shoes even have a hole in them.

"You stay here and don't move. I'll go get the money from Father and then we'll go back to get the medicine."

Bai Nuo stood there blankly, her hand held by a little boy who was a head shorter than her. Although the little boy was a bit younger than Bai Nuo, he already had the mature and rigid expression of a little adult on his face.

Bai Nuo, an adult, felt like dying when a child gave him such instructions.

Oh no, she's already died once. What would happen if she died again? Bai Nuo didn't dare to think about it.

For a moment, Bai Nuo hesitated greatly.

Seeing Bai Nuo's dazed expression, the little boy, Bai Yu, the younger brother of this body, was clearly somewhat helpless, but seemed to be used to it. He patiently asked again, "Sister, did you hear me? Wait for me here. I'm going to find Dad to get money for medicine."

Bai Nuo nodded blankly, looked down at her feet, moved her feet, and saw her toes peeking out from the toe of her shoe—the shoe had a hole in it.

Bai Nuo sighed silently and continued to look down at her feet. Bai Yu was obviously used to it and said calmly, "Wait for me here. Don't wander off."

Where could she possibly run off to?

Seeing that Bai Nuo seemed obedient, Bai Yu felt much more at ease. He took a deep breath to bolster his courage and then walked out of the dilapidated courtyard.

As soon as Bai Yu left, Bai Nuo breathed a sigh of relief. Her expression immediately fell, and her whole body seemed to have all its strength drained away. She squatted down on the ground.

After a long while, Bai Nuo finally came to her senses, raised her arm to look at her little arm, and felt like crying both inside and out.

She was originally a bright and promising young woman, basking in the sunshine of her motherland. She had just graduated from university, found a job, spent two days flirting with the handsome guy she had a crush on, and bought an 80-square-meter two-bedroom apartment with the help of her family. Before she could even enjoy her wonderful life, she drank herself to death.

Bai Nuo found it hard to accept that the bourgeois young woman had turned into a child.

In a short while, Bai Nuo finally figured out her situation. She had drunk herself to death and then inexplicably ended up in this body. Ironically, this body was also named Bai Nuo. However, this Bai Nuo wasn't as lucky as her. She had lived a smooth and successful life for over twenty years, the only misfortune being her violent death. But this Bai Nuo was different. She was only thirteen years old, and her mind wasn't very clear; she was a bit slow and simple-minded. She only knew the name of the village, Zhe Di (Sugarcane Field). She lived with her parents, grandmother, and younger brother.

Unfortunately, Bai Nuo's mother is not her biological mother, but her stepmother.

It's hard to tell whether to blame Bai Nuo's pitiful background or her scumbag father. Bai Nuo originally had a mother, but she died in childbirth when she gave birth to her younger brother, Bai Yu. Her father then married a young widow from the same village. This young widow had a son who was older than Bai Nuo, and they were living together now.

This young widow, surnamed Chen, was quite a character. Not only was she naturally alluring and charming, but she was also very good at sweet-talking. After marrying into the family, she completely won over her husband's father, who then lived a life devoted to her and her son. Not only did Ms. Chen drive away her husband's daughter and son from his previous marriage, but she also drove away her mother-in-law. Her husband, however, had no complaints whatsoever and was quite happy about it.

Oh, right, this house was built with her mother's dowry. Bai Nuo knew all this because her grandmother would whisper it in her ear from time to time, and she had overheard and written it down. Bai Nuo knew nothing about it.

After sighing twice at Ms. Chen's glorious deeds—"Sleeping with another woman's husband, beating another woman's child, and spending another woman's money"—Bai Nuo began to worry about her own future again. She knew nothing about this; what was she to do?

"Idiot..." As Bai Nuo was lost in thought, a slightly frivolous and lewd voice came from above his head. When he looked up blankly, he saw a man staring at him with a lewd gaze. His beady eyes gleamed with lust, clearly harboring ill intentions.

This was her adopted older brother, Chen Zhi. Chen Zhi was sixteen, three years older than Bai Nuo, and two heads taller. After marrying into the family, thanks to the money left by Bai Nuo's mother and the fact that Bai Nuo's father, Bai Dalin, was a skilled carpenter, Chen Zhi lived a carefree life. He did nothing all day but raid bird nests, catch small fish, gamble, and grope the skirts of the village girls. He was universally hated in the village. Sixteen should be a time of rapid growth, but Chen Zhi was as thin as a stick, pale, and unsteady on his feet—clearly the result of too much of that kind of work.

Chen Zhi felt a tickle in his heart looking at Bai Nuo's delicate features but dull-witted appearance. Without thinking, he reached out to grab Bai Nuo's face. Seeing Chen Zhi's dirty, groping hand about to grab her face, Bai Nuo frowned and dodged. Chen Zhi didn't mind, withdrew his hand, and asked with a smile, "Waiting for your brother?"

Bai Nuo remained silent.

Chen Zhi then asked, "Are you waiting for your brother to ask my mother for money to treat your grandmother's illness?"

Bai Nuo nodded this time. Bai Yu had said that his grandmother had fallen and injured her leg a couple of days ago when she went up the mountain, and she was now lying in bed unable to move. Bai Yu was worried that something might happen to the old lady, so he swallowed his pride and asked Ms. Chen for money.

They've been gone for so long and haven't come back yet. I wonder if they've even arrived.

Chen Zhi couldn't help but laugh when he saw Bai Nuo looking at his house with his head turned up. He kindly comforted the simpleton, "Don't wait anymore. My mother won't give you any money. You want money, right? I can give you some."
