It was just a casual, polite remark to break the awkward silence, but to everyone's surprise, Hu Mingmei actually nodded. "Okay! Where should we buy it?"
So, what was originally Bai Nuo buying groceries alone has now turned into Hu Mingmei and her going together.
Bai Nuo walked towards the market, glancing back at Hu Mingmei as she went—his purple robes seemed out of place, but he didn't even flinch, quietly following beside her and occasionally pulling her aside to prevent her from being jostled.
This guy doesn't care about the rules about men and women not touching each other. Look how naturally he pulls her up. He must have pulled many girls before.
"What's wrong?" Seeing Bai Nuo suddenly stop moving, Hu Mingmei frowned.
"What do you want to eat?" Bai Nuo suddenly asked. "Is there anything you don't eat?"
Hu Mingmei shook her head, "I'm not a picky eater!"
Okay, then she'll just buy whatever she wants.
Once she decided to go with whatever she wanted, Bai Nuo started buying groceries randomly. She bought three pounds of eggs—because she didn't have any at home, and she always had to steal duck eggs when she wanted some, which she found inconvenient.
I bought two pounds of pork ribs, a slaughtered chicken, two eggplants, and a lot of garlic.
"Give it to me!" Seeing that Bai Nuo couldn't carry all the things, Hu Mingmei took the initiative to take everything from Bai Nuo. In an instant, everything was in Hu Mingmei's hands, and Bai Nuo was left with empty hands.
When she came out, Bai Nuo bought some melon seeds and candied fruit.
Then he took Hu Mingmei home with him.
"Grandma, I'm back." When Bai Nuo returned home, the sun was already setting. Bai Yu and Aunt Liu were bringing all the chili peppers back into the main room. Grandma was sitting in her wheelchair, watching them work.
Bai Nuo jumped off the carriage. "Grandma, we have guests coming for dinner tonight."
As soon as Bai Nuo finished speaking, Hu Mingmei came out of the carriage, carrying a large pile of vegetables.
Bai Yu ran over excitedly, "Brother Hu, where's Brother Lu Ying?" After not seeing him for several days, Bai Yu was thinking about his martial arts skills.
"He went out on something and isn't here right now." Hu Mingmei gave Bai Yu a rare smile, and then greeted the old woman with a smile, "Grandma, sorry to bother you."
The old woman chuckled and said, "No problem, no problem. You're welcome. Ah Yu, help your brother Hu with his things."
"Give it to me!" Bai Yu took everything from Hu Mingmei's hands, and upon seeing the candied fruit, he cheered, "Great! There are melon seeds and candied fruit!"
While yelling, he tried to take things apart, but Bai Nuo slapped Bai Yu on the butt, took everything from him and handed it to Aunt Liu, saying, "Eat it after dinner. Come with me!"
Bai Yu felt incredibly wronged and looked at Bai Nuo pitifully, asking, "Where are we going?"
"Catch fish!"
After Bai Nuo led Hu Mingmei into the house, she took the wooden bucket and pulled Bai Yu out. When they returned, there was a fresh, fat fish in the bucket.
When she returned, the kitchen light was already on, as was the light in the main room. It was still early, but when Bai Nuo passed by the main room, she saw Hu Mingmei talking to her grandmother. She didn't see Aunt Liu, so she immediately assumed that Aunt Liu was cooking in the kitchen.
"Go ahead, I don't need your help!" Bai Nuo said to Bai Yu, and carried the wooden bucket into the kitchen by herself.
"What are you doing?"
To everyone's surprise, as soon as I entered the kitchen, I saw Aunt Liu wolfing down an egg and stuffing it into her mouth, with eggshells scattered on the floor.
When Bai Nuo suddenly came in, Aunt Liu choked, her face turned red, and she couldn't say a word.
"Eat first!" Bai Nuo was angry, but seeing that Aunt Liu looked like she was about to die, she had no choice but to suppress her anger.
"Girl, I was wrong!" Aunt Liu finally managed to swallow the egg in her mouth, then immediately knelt down, kowtowing repeatedly to Bai Nuo, with egg yolk still around her mouth.
"I was just too hungry, so I couldn't resist boiling an egg to eat. Girl, I was wrong!"
Bai Nuo wasn't used to people kneeling before her, but she didn't tell Aunt Liu to get up, letting Aunt Liu remain kneeling. "How long have you been doing this?"
"Just this once!" Aunt Liu trembled like a leaf, shaking uncontrollably. "Really, I really didn't eat lunch, so I couldn't resist sneaking a bite. Girl, you have to believe me, you can ask the old lady..."
Seeing that Aunt Liu was about to cry, Bai Nuo said calmly, "Don't get agitated, I have no intention of taking you to see the officials!"
"Then..." So you're telling her to leave? Aunt Liu was terrified when she heard Bai Nuo's words and burst into tears. "Girl, please don't send me away. I have another daughter who is getting married, and I need to save up her dowry."
"Tell me, why didn't you eat lunch? We have money and food at home, don't we?" Bai Nuo pulled over two chairs, sat down on one, and patted the other. "Get up!"
Aunt Liu got up shakily, head down, her fingers constantly picking at her nails, not daring to look at Bai Nuo.
"Please sit down!"
Aunt Liu then sat down shakily and stammered, "At noon, the old lady told Bai Yu that she wanted to drink porridge. The weather was nice today, so the old lady told me to wash all the sheets and blankets. After I cooked the porridge and washed the sheets, I came back and found that Bai Yu had spilled the porridge!"
