Let's rewind a little, back to the afternoon of this day.
Bai Nuo had no idea that someone had plotted against her and even investigated her fiancé. She happily closed the doors of Duobaoge a morning early, and then happily brought Jiang Sanniang and her sisters, as well as Qinghe and the others, to her home with Hu Mingmei.
There were four of them on her side, and three on Hu Mingmei's side, filling two carriages to the brim as they went to the sugarcane field.
"Girl, is this your home? It's so beautiful!" Qinghe was visiting for the first time and didn't know the details. She just assumed that Bai Nuo's family was well-off. Looking at the house, she kept clicking her tongue in admiration.
Just as autumn began, Bai Nuo had Long Yi and the others fence off a large plot of land behind the house to raise chickens and ducks. At the same time, the roof was renovated and the peeling paint on the walls was repaired. Now, the Bai family's house looks brand new. Anyone who doesn't know the inside story would definitely think it's a new house, not an old one.
Jiang San Niang and Jiang Qiao'er had come several times, so they naturally knew what was going on. They immediately laughed and said, "What's this? Your manager still has a house in town, he just doesn't live there."
Qinghe immediately looked at Bai Nuo with envy.
Bai Nuo smiled sheepishly, "This isn't a house I built myself; it was left to me by my mother! Okay, go and bring your things down."
Two carriages blocked the entrance completely. When they got out of the carriages to talk, Aunt Liu heard the noise and ran out to take the things from Lu Ying and Xia Donglai.
Seeing that she couldn't handle it all by herself, Bai Nuo pushed Qinghe over to her.
Qinghe stuck out her tongue and quickly ran over to help Aunt Liu with the things in her hands. Aunt Liu didn't recognize Qinghe, but seeing that she was dressed similarly to Jiang Qiao'er, she assumed she was Bai Nuo's friend and quickly let her pass.
Bai Nuo smiled and said, "Auntie, just let her help. She finished work half a day early today. She feels uncomfortable if she doesn't work."
Jiang San Niang smiled and took the things from Liu Da Niang's hands. "Yes, Da Niang, we still have to work. We can't be idle, otherwise we'll feel uncomfortable."
"That's right!" Bai Nuo smiled and took some of the things as well, so that Aunt Liu had the fewest things in her hands.
Aunt Liu chuckled. Surrounded by these young girls, she didn't know what to say, so she could only smile and follow them inside.
The women put their things away, and the men got the carriage ready. The lively scene in front of the Bai family's house attracted many villagers to come and watch, but seeing the menacing-looking, cold-blooded figures, they dared not approach.
Tsk tsk, who was it that said Bai Nuo was an idiot back then? Now she's living a better life than all of them.
"Why did you call us here?" After Jiang Sanniang entered the house and greeted the old woman, she looked at Bai Nuo in the courtyard and asked, "It's not for a tea party, is it?"
"I invited you here so you'd eat and drink well!" Bai Nuo said with a smile. "Auntie, move two tables into the living room."
"Hey!" Aunt Liu hurriedly responded and went to move the table, while Bai Nuo took out all the things—several bags of vegetables.
Bai Nuo sent Bai Yu, Lu Yingxia, Dong Lai, and even Hu Mingmei out to catch shrimp and clams. Bai Nuo even drew pictures of crabs for Bai Yu and Hu Mingmei, telling them to bring them back if they saw any.
The women, on the other hand, stayed home to wash vegetables.
Jiang San Niang poured a bag of things into a basin, and as soon as she poured it out, she exclaimed in surprise, "Oh my, why did you even buy duck offal and pig offal?"
Jiang San Niang looked at Bai Nuo with suspicion. Bai Nuo should be rich, so why did he buy these things? Did Bai Nuo have some difficulties that he was embarrassed to tell her?
"What's so special about this? It's delicious!" Bai Nuo turned her head and saw Jiang San Niang's furrowed brows. She stood up and took the bowl from her. "Don't underestimate this stuff. We used to eat this even when there was nothing else to eat." Of course, Bai Nuo was just making things up. If there wasn't even rice to eat, where would there be meat? But in her previous life, she really loved eating these things.
Duck offal – duck intestines and kidneys; pig offal – pig liver and kidneys.
"I know, I'm not saying I dislike this stuff!" Jiang San Niang said calmly. Years ago, when her parents passed away, her family was not as well off as it is now. Qiao'er was still young, and she would even pick up pig offal to eat in order to give Qiao'er a bite of meat.
"But, are you having some kind of trouble? Logically speaking, you shouldn't need to buy these things just to treat yourself."
"Just watch how I eat it later!" Bai Nuo smiled and handed the vegetables to her. "Wash these, I'll clean them!"
Looking at the smile in her eyes, Jiang San Niang couldn't help but ask, "What day is it today? How come you're willing to eat such a big meal?" Bai Nuo is rich, but she is usually very stingy. She never eats at the inn and always brings her own food.
"Today is the fifteenth, the moon is so round! It's rare to have such a round moon to admire in a month, shouldn't we eat something nice?" Today is the fifteenth of August in the lunar calendar, commonly known as the Mid-Autumn Festival.
It was a day with clear skies, a refreshing autumn breeze, and a time for family reunions.
Jiang San Niang was stunned by what Bai Nuo said and nodded blankly.
The women worked quickly. Jiang San Niang and the others washed the vegetables, radishes, potatoes, and various mushrooms. They cut the radishes and potatoes into chunks, separated the vegetables, and divided each item into four portions, two for men and two for women.
Bai Nuo, on the other hand, cut the duck intestines in half, the duck kidneys into flower shapes, and the pig liver and kidneys into thin slices.
