She is truly a good mother-in-law; she would rather give chicken soup to her daughter-in-law than drink it herself.
"Are you sick? Are you?" Chen Qiuling heard Hu Lingling's voice as soon as she entered Chen Zhi's courtyard. The courtyard was filled with maids, all of them with their heads down and not saying a word.
"What's wrong?" Chen Qiuling asked in a deep voice. Her seriousness immediately put on the airs of a wealthy and noblewoman.
The maids all looked up. Chunhua, the maid beside Chen Qiuling, pointed at them and scolded them unhappily, "What's going on? Speak up, are you mute? Didn't you hear Madam asking you a question?"
Qiuyue, the head maid in Chen Zhi's courtyard, said, "The young mistress and the young master are arguing inside. They've been arguing for quite a while now, and we don't dare to go in to serve them, so we can only stand here."
"Arguing? Why did you argue?"
Qiu Yue replied respectfully, "I don't know. We only know that the young mistress started arguing with the young master as soon as she came back, but we don't know why they argued."
Chen Qiuling frowned and said with dissatisfaction, "This Lingling really has no manners or upbringing at all. How can a woman quarrel with her husband? Zhi'er has to manage the business and take care of the family every day. He must be so tired!"
Chen Qiuling was making fun of her daughter-in-law, and Chunhua dared not say a word. She could only try her best to stand beside Chen Qiuling and support her.
"Let's go take a look!" Chen Qiuling said with dissatisfaction. "They argue all day long, and they've lost all their money."
As she spoke, Chen Qiuling walked to the door and knocked. She could still hear Chen Zhi yelling from inside, "You're the one who's sick! I'm too lazy to argue with you!"
"No, you have to explain yourself clearly!" Hu Lingling said.
The sounds from inside grew louder and louder. Chen Qiuling kept banging on the door, but no one came to open it or pay any attention to her. The more she listened to the sounds from inside, the more anxious Chen Qiuling became. "Zhi'er, open the door!"
But no one paid her any attention. As Chen Qiuling listened to the conversation inside, she suddenly heard a "slap!" as if someone had slapped someone else. Then she heard Hu Lingling shout, "You good-for-nothing, I'll fight you to the death!"
Then there was a clattering sound from inside, like something had fallen.
"Madam, how about we call someone to break down the door?" Chunhua suggested.
Chen Qiuling thought this was a good idea, so she quickly said, "Okay, go quickly and call someone over!"
So Chunhua hurriedly went outside, called two servants in, and they broke down the door to Chen Zhi and Hu Lingling's room.
As soon as the door opened, Chen Qiuling saw Chen Zhi and Hu Lingling wrestling together. Looking at the two of them, Chen Qiuling felt overwhelmed and said wearily, "Pull the young master and young mistress apart for me."
The two servants quickly pulled Chen Zhi away. Hu Lingling was a woman, and they didn't dare touch her. Chen Qiuling said, "Lingling, why don't you get up right now? Come out here, all of you! How old are you, still fighting? Aren't you ashamed?"
After saying that, Chen Qiuling walked towards the hall, supporting her belly. Chunhua stood at the door and looked at the two of them. "Oh dear, young master and young mistress, you'd better hurry up and get ready to go to the hall. Madam looks very angry!"
When the two arrived at the front hall, everything seemed to be alright. Chen Qiuling was sitting at the head of the table. Chen Zhi and Hu Lingling went up to Chen Qiuling, awkwardly called her "Mother," and then looked away at each other with mutual dislike.
Chen Qiuling, holding the sheet music, asked calmly, "What's wrong? Why are you arguing, Zhi'er?"
Chen Zhi said irritably, "How should I know? This woman's gone mad. I just got back and lay down, and she's already arguing with me. I don't know if she's taken the wrong medicine!"
Hu Lingling was already angry. She originally thought she had married a rich man and risen to a higher social status, but who knew this man was impotent? "You're the one who took the wrong medicine, no, you didn't even take the medicine, did you?"
"What did you say? Say it again!" Chen Zhi glared fiercely at Hu Lingling and raised his arm.
"Hit me! Hit me!" Hu Lingling was determined to make a scene today. She stiffened her neck and brought her face close to Chen Zhi's, sneering, "You'd better just kill me, so others can see how your Bai family abuses your daughter-in-law after abusing your daughter!"
Seeing that Hu Lingling's words were becoming increasingly outrageous, Chen Qiuling slammed her hand on the table and said, "Lingling, what nonsense are you spouting?"
"How am I talking nonsense?" Chen Qiuling's attitude completely enraged Hu Lingling. "If you hadn't lied to me back then, would I have been able to marry into your family? Can't I even say a few words now?"
"How did I lie to you?" Chen Zhi retorted angrily. "You told me you needed a house to get married, and now I've given you a house, haven't I? What did I lie to you about? I've been treating you well, making you a pampered young lady with everyone waiting on you. Can't you speak with a clear conscience?!"
"But you're sick!" Hu Lingling shouted, completely breaking down!
Chen Zhi thought she was being insulted, and he stiffened his neck, wanting to slap Hu Lingling, "Hey, what's wrong with you, woman?"
Chen Zhi didn't understand Hu Lingling's words, but Chen Qiuling inexplicably understood, and her heart skipped a beat. "Lingling, why did you say that?"
"We haven't even consummated our marriage yet!" Hu Lingling went all out. "What is this if not insane?"
Chen Qiuling and Chen Zhi both knew what Chen Zhi (themselves) was up to, and their faces immediately became somewhat embarrassed. Fortunately, Chen Qiuling had already asked the servants to leave, so now there were only the three of them in the hall, and they weren't worried about others finding out.
