Seeing that Hu Mingmei was genuinely angry, Bai Nuo immediately stopped being angry and got out of bed. Hu Mingmei tried to stop her, but for some reason, he only moved his lips slightly without saying a word, letting her get up.
After getting up, Bai Nuo sat cross-legged opposite Hu Mingmei, reached out and hugged Hu Mingmei's waist, buried her head in his chest, and whispered, "I really didn't know I was pregnant. Hu Mingmei nodded, "Yes, one thousand taels of silver, five hundred taels of gold, and some other things!"
Although she could afford a thousand taels of silver and five hundred taels of gold, she was happy when others gave her money. Bai Nuo immediately looked around, "Where is it?"
Seeing her greedy look, Hu Mingmei found it quite amusing. He pulled her back into his arms and said calmly, "Grandmother's things still need to be packed. We'll send them over once they're all packed!"
"Why are Grandmother's things in the palace?" Bai Nuo asked curiously. Although Grandmother had royal blood, she had established her own residence and could handle her own affairs.
"There's a story behind this!" Hu Mingmei explained the family history to her. "When the Empress Dowager went on a trip, she fell ill with a heart ailment. It was my grandmother who carried her to find the imperial physician. After the Empress Dowager returned to the palace, she always remembered her. Since we were related, she always thought of her. My grandmother passed away at a young age, and soon after, she lost her son. I was also sickly, which made the Empress Dowager even more heartbroken. So she took all of her things into the palace, and left my parents' things to me."
"Didn't our parents have any property or assets when they were alive?" Bai Nuo recalled that when she helped Hu Mingmei organize the accounts, she didn't see any assets under Hu Mingmei's name. If they hadn't earned some money back in their hometown, they would have starved to death here.
With a monthly allowance of four hundred for the two of them, it wasn't even enough to cover the facade of a mansion like this.
"I was young then, and my health was poor, so I was unable to resist. That person took it back under the pretense of doing it for my own good, and it hasn't been returned to me to this day!" Hu Mingmei said calmly. "My father was in charge of managing the household back then!"
But when the tree falls, the monkeys scatter; when the man died, not only did his only son almost die, but all his property was in the hands of others.
"What a shameless person!" Bai Nuo was furious!
"Second Master, the young mistress's medicine is ready!" As the two were talking, Granny Wang walked in, and the two stopped talking in tacit agreement. Bai Nuo lifted her head from Hu Mingmei's arms, "Granny, is it alright if I don't drink it?"
The bowl of medicine was dark and unappetizing. Even before drinking it, the smell was enough to make Bai Nuo gag.
"Take it and throw it away..." Hu Mingmei didn't want to let Bai Nuo drink the pregnancy-preserving medicine prescribed by another doctor. "I'll have Lu Ying go and invite Doctor Sun over later!"
"Yes!" Just as Granny Wang turned around, Madam Zheng appeared at the door.
So Wang Mama stopped in her tracks, "Madam!"
Hu Mingmei turned around and saw her. Madam Zheng walked in. "Ming'er is here too!" Then she saw the medicine in Wang Mama's hand. "Nuo'er, why aren't you drinking this medicine? It will be useless if it gets cold!"
Bai Nuo quickly got out of bed, but Madam Zheng immediately stopped her, saying, "You should stay in bed and not get up!"
So Bai Nuo stopped getting up and leaned back against the headboard.
Madam Zheng glanced at the maid she had brought, who immediately brought up the things Madam Zheng had brought. Madam Zheng smiled and said, "It's all my fault, Second Aunt, I didn't know you were pregnant..."
