Just as Peony reached the door, she tripped and fell with a thud. Looking up, she saw Hu Mingmei storming in, accompanied by Lu Yingma. Peony was overjoyed and exclaimed, "Second Master!"
Second Master is here! Madam is saved!
Hu Mingmei kicked one of the old women surrounding Bai Nuo. Lu Ying also dealt with the remaining three. The old woman staggered forward after being kicked by Hu Mingmei. Bai Nuo barely dodged and saw Hu Mingmei's figure.
She heard Peony's voice, but the moment she actually saw Hu Mingmei, the knife in her hand clattered to the ground, and tears streamed down her face.
She was genuinely scared, but she had no choice but to do it.
Hu Mingmei stretched out his long arm and pulled Bai Nuo into his arms. He stroked her head and said softly, "It's alright, don't be afraid anymore, your husband is here!"
Hu Wenbai and the others also saw Hu Mingmei. Seeing that he was alright, they were very disappointed. How did he wake up? How did he not die? Did they really find a miracle doctor?
However, Hu Wenbo still looked happy. "Ming'er, you're awake? That's great! Grandpa was just about to find you a new doctor. The doctor you hired is really skilled."
Hu Mingmei, however, was unmoved and refused to feign concern. She coldly looked at Hu Wenbai and said, "Grandpa, what are you trying to do? Are you trying to force my wife to her death?" Hu Mingmei emphasized the word "wife" with particular force. "Do you really want to see my family destroyed?"
Hu Wenbai looked a little embarrassed. Hu Mingmei really looked too much like that person, especially when she was angry. Hu Wenbai had a momentary feeling that the person had returned, and he was a little scared for a moment.
Hu Mingmei released Bai Nuo and said softly, "Don't be afraid, be good!"
Bai Nuo didn't know what he wanted to do, so she lowered her head, nodded, and then wiped away her tears.
Hu Mingmei walked step by step to the front. Hu Wenbai, Hu Haichuan and the other two were watching him, wondering what he wanted to do. But his cold gaze made Hu Wenbai and the old lady Hu feel a chill in their hearts.
Hu Mingmei stopped in front of the two and asked softly, "Who said Nuonuo should kneel in the ancestral hall to copy scriptures?"
No one answered.
Peony shouted from below, "It's the Old Master and the Old Madam!" She didn't care about their status or how different they were from her; as long as Hu Mingmei and Bai Nuo were willing to protect her, that was enough.
"You lowly servant!" Old Madam Hu roared, her face contorted with rage as she glared at Peony, utterly lacking in decorum. "The masters are speaking here. Do you, a mere servant, have the right to speak?"
Peony, with her neck stiff, said, "This servant is only telling the truth. Not only do you want the young mistress to copy scriptures, but you also want her to copy them while kneeling, and she can't get up until she finishes copying them!"
Hu Mingmei's gaze was icy cold, and Old Madam Hu stammered in her defense, "Ming'er, you're sick, and Grandmother just wanted to pray for your well-being!"
With a "slap," Hu Mingmei swiftly struck out, slapping Old Madam Hu across the face.
Madam Hu covered her face in disbelief, while Hu Wenbai and Hu Haichuan stood up abruptly, roaring, "Hu Mingmei!"
Hu Mingmei acted as if he hadn't heard, and slapped Old Madam Hu on the other side of her face, saying coldly, "A mere concubine dares to call me by my name? And dares to call herself my grandmother?"
A concubine, a concubine. For so many years, ever since that wretched woman died, no one has called her a concubine, and no one dares to mention that title.
Everyone treated her as their wife.
"Hu Mingmei, you've gone too far!" Hu Haichuan couldn't stand seeing his mother being beaten. He roared and tried to go up and teach Hu Mingmei a lesson. But as soon as he moved, Lu Ying blocked his way and opened her sword with a whoosh, blinding him.
Hu Mingmei said calmly, "These people are all illegitimate sons. If anyone dares to make a move, Lu Ying, kill him!"
Lu Ying's murderous voice echoed throughout the room, "Your subordinate obeys!"
Hu Wenbo was furious and cursed, "Hu Mingmei, she has been officially recognized as your elder, after all!"
"I didn't admit it, and nobody else did!" Hu Mingmei said calmly. "Huang Wenbai, you should be glad you're still my grandfather, otherwise, you would be the one getting these two slaps!"
Huang Wenbo!
His real name has been revealed.
Huang Wenbai didn't stand on ceremony with Hu Mingmei and said coldly, "Hu Mingmei, are you trying to sever ties with your family? Do you want to be an unfilial son?"
"So what if it is?" Hu Mingmei sneered. "Everything here belongs to my grandmother. What does it have to do with you? I've tolerated you all these years; you've enjoyed enough of a life of leisure!"
"Fine, fine, fine!" Hu Wenbai's eyes widened in anger, and he sneered three times, saying "fine" three times in a row. "I want to see how you break ties with me!" He was confident that Hu Mingmei, that sickly fellow, didn't have the ability. Hu Mingmei had been indifferent to things for many years and was no match for him at all.
"Guards!" Hu Mingmei called out coldly. As soon as Hu Mingmei finished speaking, more than twenty expressionless men in gray clothes appeared in the hall, led by Xia Donglai. Hu Wenbai looked at these twenty-one people and his expression finally changed.
"The Royal Guard? Back then... back then..."
Hu Mingmei interrupted him, "Are you trying to say that they all died back then? Are you very surprised to see them?"
Hu Wenbai—no, Huang Wenbai—slumped into a chair. Old Madam Hu, having only recently married into the family, was unaware that Princess Yuru possessed the power of the Royal Guard.
