Madam Zheng sneered, "My son doesn't have a disease that will kill him with the slightest touch!" Hu Mingmei has gone too far!
The guard replied coldly, "The constant flow of people will disturb the young master's recovery. The second master is only doing this for the young master's own good. The doctor and maids are already in the courtyard. Just let us know what medicine you want!"
Aside from providing the medication but not giving it away, Hu Mingmei did not restrict Huang Yikang's access to the medication, which can be considered a sign of Hu Mingmei's kindness.
Madam Zheng nodded, understanding what the guard meant. She sneered, "Then thank you very much, Second Young Master!" She was about to go inside when Granny Liu grabbed her arm. "Madam, you can only go in, not out. Fourth Young Master is important, but you should also think about Miss!" Although Huang Ziyao was already a young lady, Huang Yikang's illness was still serious. If Madam Zheng stayed inside for a year or two, what would happen to Huang Ziyao?
Huang Ziyao is already of marriageable age. If Madam Zheng is not around, who will help her take care of things? Wouldn't that delay the child's future?
Although the servant hadn't been with her for long, she spoke sincerely. Madam Zheng grabbed Liu Pozi's hand and said, "Go back now. Keep an eye on Ziyao for me. If anything happens, let her go to her uncle and maternal grandfather, or she can stay at her maternal grandfather's house for a while. I, as her mother, am worried about Kang'er's condition!" She could stay by Huang Yikang's side day and night, but she couldn't leave him unattended. With this illness, she couldn't bear to leave Huang Yikang in the care of doctors and servants.
"Please, I'm counting on you!" Madam Zheng said, taking off a bracelet from her wrist and handing it to Granny Liu.
After receiving the bracelet, Granny Liu noticed the worried look on Madam Zheng's face and sighed, "Alright then, I'll try my best to persuade Miss to go to Master Zheng's house!"
Madam Zheng nodded, stepped inside, and the guard did not stop her.
On Madam Zheng's first day there, the medicine supply was normal.
The same thing happened the next day.
By the third day, half of the medicine was gone, as was the food given to Huang Yikang.
Looking at the food laid out on the table, Madam Zheng said angrily, "Didn't Hu Mingmei say that there would be medicine and food for us to use as we pleased? How come there's so little?"
It's only been three days, and Hu Mingmei doesn't want to give the medicine anymore?
"How does Bai Nuo manage the household?"
After speaking to Hu Mingmei, Madam Zheng also brought Bai Nuo along, saying, "Go to the pharmacy and get the medicine. The money will come from your monthly allowance!"
The maid who was supposed to fetch medicine and meals for Huang Yikang trembled with fear under Madam Zheng's anger, and stammered, "It's not that the Second Master and Young Madam refused to give him medicine, it's... it's that the Second Master reduced the Fourth Young Master's medicine!"
Madam Zheng asked incredulously, "What? Explain yourself! When did Second Master find out about Kang'er's illness?"
The maid looked at Madam Zheng and said, "Last night, the second master came to see the fourth young master, but he didn't come in when he was at the door. This morning, he took away more than half of the fourth young master's monthly allowance, saying that the fourth young master didn't need it anymore, so this is all we have!"
If they don't cut back on their spending, they won't last another month.
"Did the Second Master really say that?" Madam Zheng asked again in a cold voice. What did he mean by "no longer needed"? Wasn't that cursing Kang'er to die young?
The young maid knew Madam Zheng's temper, and seeing her like this, she became even more frightened. She trembled and nodded, "This servant heard it from the kitchen staff!"
When the monthly allowance decreased, the kitchen provided less food as well. After all, no one would worry about the future just to have a good meal, so the kitchen calculated the amount before bringing the food over.
The pharmacy staff said the exact same thing.
"Outrageous!" Madam Zheng was so angry that she trembled all over. Kang'er was not dead yet, and the father was not only hoping that his son would get better soon, but he also touched his son's things. Wasn't he trying to kill him?
The doctor, who was listening to their conversation, interjected, "Second Madam, if the Fourth Young Master doesn't have enough medicine, I'm afraid he..." Huang Yikang's illness was incurable, and the chance of a cure was extremely slim. With medicine, he was merely clinging to life, but without it, even if a renowned doctor came in person, Huang Yikang would surely die.
"Prepare Kang'er's medicine for today first!" Madam Zheng stood up with a gloomy face, threw down the words, and walked outside.
The servants, unsure of where she was going, exchanged bewildered glances, then went about their own business.
"Let me out!" When Madam Zheng reached the courtyard gate, the two guards still stopped her. Madam Zheng said angrily, "Let me out!"
"You cannot leave!" the two guards said, merely blocking the doorway without doing anything to Madam Zheng. "Please return!"
"Damn dogs!" Madam Zheng muttered, rushing forward, but the two guards did not budge, still holding her back tightly.
"Did you hear me! I'm going out. I'm not sick. Have you ever seen a sick person as healthy as me?" Madam Zheng had no way to deal with them, so she could only say angrily.
"Second Master said that no one in the Fourth Young Master's courtyard, whether sick or not, is allowed to leave until the Fourth Young Master recovers!" Or rather, they are not allowed to leave until Huang Yikang dies. Huang Yikang is lecherous and depraved; who knows if the people in his courtyard will also be infected?
"Let me out!" Madam Zheng shouted, taking a hairpin from her hair and pressing it against her neck. "If you don't let me out, I'll die here and see how Hu Mingmei explains himself to the Zheng family and to the world!"
