Bai Nuo lowered her eyes, a mocking smile playing on her lips, but it quickly vanished. "I'm just here to let you know. I won't bother you any longer. Enjoy your meal!"
"You're still being stubborn!" Huang Haichuan sneered, looking at Bai Nuo with mockery. Even at this point, she still wouldn't back down.
Bai Nuo ignored Huang Haichuan's taunts and turned to walk out.
Bai Nuo and the others quickly disappeared from the hall. After they left, Huang Haichuan's mocking expression disappeared, and he turned to Huang Wenbai and asked, "Dad, what did they mean by that?"
Huang Haichuan wasn't as smart as Huang Wenbai, but he wasn't stupid either. Although he had been mocking Bai Nuo, he only wanted to provoke her. However, Bai Nuo didn't fall for it, so Huang Haichuan started to wonder if something was amiss.
Bai Nuo and Hu Mingmei were at odds, and Bai Nuo, after marrying into the family, also targeted them in every way. How could he believe that Bai Nuo would come to them for help as soon as Hu Mingmei got into trouble?
Not only Huang Haichuan didn't believe it, but Bai Nuo himself probably didn't believe it either.
Huang Wenbai glanced at the leftover food on the table. They had indeed miscalculated and shouldn't have let their guard down. "Now we can only pretend that nothing happened and go about our business as usual!" Huang Wenbai said.
Huang Haichuan nodded thoughtfully. Although he desperately wanted Hu Mingmei dead, he had no choice but to be patient to avoid giving himself away.
As soon as Bai Nuo and Lu Ying left the courtyard, and saw that Shiwu and Shiliu had closed the gate again, Bai Nuo asked, "Did you figure something out?"
Jiang Sanniang spoke first, "They're pretending!" She had clearly seen Huang Haichuan's knowing look when Bai Nuo mentioned Hu Mingmei's accident. Although he hid it well, Jiang Sanniang had seen many people and had a very sharp eye. Such a fleeting expression could not escape her notice.
“Sister is right!” Bai Nuo sneered. “I think so too!” How could Bai Nuo not see what Jiang San Niang had seen?
It's true that they were the happiest when Hu Mingmei had an accident, but their expressions could be surprised or ecstatic, but definitely not the expression of someone who knew all along, unless they knew why Hu Mingmei had an accident and when it happened.
This was all planned out.
And all that food they have!
Lu Ying's face was grim. "I will go and find out who has been in contact with them!" Nothing that had passed through his hands had ever gone wrong. Now, there was actually fish and meat on their dinner table. To him, this was an utter disgrace.
These two things seem unrelated, but if we find out who bought groceries or delivered meals to them, we might be able to find out who was behind Hu Mingmei's schemes.
After Bai Nuojiang San Niang and Lu Ying parted ways, they returned to their own courtyard. The two of them kept discussing how to lure out the family member.
They knew nothing, couldn't see Hu Mingmei, didn't know who the murderer was, or who her family was. The only thing they knew was that Hu Mingmei had been taken away. The two women discussed the matter for half the night before finally falling asleep around dawn.
Early the next morning, Bai Nuo and Jiang San Niang first sent Wang Mama out for a while, and then the two pregnant women went back to check on all the shops under the Hu family's name, with a particular focus on Duobaoge.
After the incident, the third floor of Duobaoge was sealed off. Although the first and second floors were still open, they didn't have much business because of the third floor.
Moreover, Bai Nuo didn't see any pearls on the first floor; all she saw were samples from modern jewelry catalogs. Jiang San Niang, seeing that there wasn't a single pearl ornament on the counter, couldn't help but ask, "Are these the only styles here? Where are the others?"
The manager was a middle-aged man named Chen, whom Hu Mingmei had found. He was said to be from Hu Mingmei's mother's side of the family and had always cared about Hu Mingmei. He was very reliable, so after the Duobao Pavilion opened, Hu Mingmei called him over to help her manage the entire Duobao Pavilion.
After Manager Chen arrived, he quickly figured out all of Bai Nuo's relationships. Seeing that it was Jiang San Niang who asked, he didn't feel offended. He smiled wryly and said, "Madam Lu, you don't know, but a few days ago, the Second Master had all the pearls put away and stopped them from being sold!"
They won't let us sell it anymore?
After exchanging a puzzled look with Jiang Sanniang, Bai Nuo asked, "Why did you do this, Second Master?"
Manager Chen shook his head, "I don't know either. I didn't have time to ask before the Second Master had his accident!"
"What's the situation on the third floor?" Bai Nuo asked. "Have the family members been found?"
"The people from the Jingzhao Prefecture arrived very quickly. They took the Second Master away in no time and sealed off the third floor. I heard that his family is also in the Jingzhao Prefecture. We haven't been able to see them. If we hadn't said that all the businesses on the first, second, and third floors are separate and unrelated, this place would have been sealed off too!" Manager Chen said helplessly as he talked about yesterday's situation.
Finding no clues, Bai Nuo and Jiang San Niang looked around the Treasure Pavilion and then asked Manager Chen for the account books.
"Manager Chen, we'll be running the shop with you from now on," Bai Nuo said before leaving.
Manager Chen was a little worried, "Young Madam, are you sure you can manage?" Although Hu Mingmei had never told anyone, those who needed to know already knew that Bai Nuo was pregnant, less than three months along.
