Bai Nuo was about to get out of bed when Hu Mingmei grabbed her hand and pulled her back into his arms. He held her tightly, buried his chin in her shoulder, took a deep breath, and shook his head at her. "I'm fine, I'm alright. You don't need to call Doctor Sun."
Bai Nuo noticed Hu Mingmei's emotions, but didn't move, letting Hu Mingmei hold her. She asked softly, "What's wrong?"
Hu Mingmei shook his head. "I'm just afraid that you might leave." He didn't even want to know what Bai Nuo's era was like. His only fear was that Bai Nuo would leave him with the baby.
Bai Nuo reached out and wiped away her tears. She didn't know when the tears had started falling. She turned around and hugged Hu Mingmei, shaking her head and saying in a muffled voice, "I won't leave. I can't find my way home anymore."
She didn't know how she got there, and she had even less idea how she would get back.
The couple held each other and talked, sharing their deepest secrets, until dawn before finally falling into a deep sleep in each other's arms.
**
Perhaps it was because Princess Cheng felt very guilty after you were injured at the Prince Cheng's residence that Princess Cheng came to visit you two days after you returned to the Hu family. Moreover, she was not alone; there was also Princess Duan, the wife of the Sixth Prince—the wife of the legendary prince who loved his people like his own children.
Bai Nuo was unaware that Princess Cheng had come to visit, as Princess Cheng had not informed her of her upcoming visit. However, upon reflection, she reasoned that Princess Cheng did not need her to know; Prince Cheng was a prince, while her family were merely commoners. There was no reason for an emperor or prince to notify commoners before visiting their homes. What surprised her, however, was why Princess Duan had also come. They had no prior connection!
As soon as Bai Nuo entered the hall, she saw Princess Cheng and Princess Duan sitting to the left and right of the head of the table, dressed in casual clothes, like ordinary women, except for the gold thread embroidered on their hems, which revealed their wealth beyond that of ordinary people.
There were many other things displayed in the hall.
The moment Bai Nuo stepped into the hall, she greeted Princess Cheng, saying, "Please forgive me, Your Highnesses, I am late." Upon reaching her, Bai Nuo tried to curtsy to Princess Cheng, but Princess Cheng quickly came down to help her, saying, "Sister-in-law, you are too kind. We are the ones who have bothered you. You are pregnant and injured at my place, so I shouldn't have bothered you. But I was really worried about you, so I came to check on you. How are you?"
"Bai Nuo is very well, thank you for your concern, Your Highness." Bai Nuo nodded with a smile, neither agreeing nor disagreeing with Princess Cheng's words. If she really cared, shouldn't she have come on the same day or the next day? However, Princess Cheng's words were polite and reasonable, so Bai Nuo wouldn't nitpick.
"It's good that you're alright!" Princess Cheng smiled and looked Bai Nuo up and down, as if trying to understand her thoroughly. Seeing that Bai Nuo's complexion was rosy and she had indeed recovered quite well, she said with some distress, "I should have come earlier, but... sigh, I'm not afraid you'll laugh at me, but I've been so busy dealing with the mess that happened in my family!"
Bai Nuo looked at Princess Cheng with confusion, not understanding what Princess Cheng meant.
At this moment, Princess Duan began to offer her advice, "Sister-in-law, what are you worried about? Fourth Brother's wedding is a joyous occasion, after all. If it weren't for this happy event, I wouldn't have run into you. Madam Hu, I just love to join in the fun. I heard you were injured, and since we're family, I shamelessly came with you. Please don't think I'm disturbing your recovery!"
Princess Duan spoke with a smile, her round face and gentle features exuding elegance. She was a completely different type of woman from Princess Cheng. Bai Nuo gracefully curtsied and thanked her with a smile, "How could that be? The presence of the two princesses is a blessing that the Hu family and I could never have imagined."
"You're a pretty girl, but you're a bit thin!" Princess Duan helped Bai Nuo up, looked her up and down, and also told her, "You're injured and pregnant, so you need to rest well and not worry us."
Bai Nuo was shocked. How come everyone knew she was pregnant? Looking at the Princess Consort's concerned eyes, Bai Nuo had no choice but to nod reluctantly. Then she invited the two princess consorts to their seats and instructed Wang Mama to serve tea.
Both princesses genuinely wanted to make Bai Nuo happy, so they didn't mention Princess Yu Ru or Hu Mingmei's illness, which were sad topics. Instead, they chose some very cheerful topics to talk about. Bai Nuo thought to herself, what did she do to deserve such kindness from the two princesses?
As they were talking, Princess Cheng sighed. Princess Duan looked at her curiously and asked, "Why did you sigh, sister-in-law?"
Princess Cheng rolled her eyes inelegantly. Although the movement was small, Bai Nuo still noticed it. Princess Cheng's tone was also somewhat displeased as she spoke, "Aren't you just asking the obvious? Isn't he our second son? Well, we can't call him the second son yet, he's the concubine who's about to enter the family."
"It's strange, isn't it!" Princess Duan found it quite amusing when talking about Princess Cheng's family. "Sister-in-law, aren't you and Fourth Brother very close? We haven't seen Fourth Brother's concubine for so many years. Lingyu is so grown up and will be getting married soon. How come Fourth Brother has taken a concubine at this time?" Moreover, it's a concubine who is about the same age as her daughter, beautiful and charming, and looks much better than Princess Cheng.
Although Princess Cheng was bright and dignified, and her appearance was outstanding among all the princesses, her graceful demeanor made her even more attractive and she was becoming the most sought-after royal wife. However, she was in her thirties and had given birth to a child, a girl, not a son. As a result, her appearance could not compare with those of the younger ones, and she did not have the same advantages as them. The younger ones still had the opportunity to have a son, but she could only have a daughter.
