As soon as Huang Wenbai and Qian Peilan arrived at the plum garden, they became dejected, and a sense of sorrow arose in their hearts.
As I walked along, all I could see in the courtyard was overgrown with weeds. A stone path ran through the middle, but the stones were of uneven quality, some good and some bad. There was an old well by the inner wall, and a bare tree stood by the outer wall. It was still the height of summer, but the tree had no leaves and exuded an air of desolation, clearly having been dead for a long time.
Although the two were old, they still noticed the dilapidated eaves and the spider webs hanging under them. A large spider was hanging on one of the webs, constantly weaving its web, appearing very diligent.
"Go in! This will be your home from now on!" Several servants shoved the two of them hard and pushed them into the hall. Because they arrived first with their luggage, the hall was empty when they entered.
Qian Peilan was beaten up, and her mouth was naturally swollen. She could barely walk steadily, and when someone pushed her, she fell forward like a horse. Huang Wenbai didn't even have time to curse before he quickly caught Qian Peilan, "Peilan, be careful!"
"These lackeys!" Huang Wenbai turned around, wanting to curse, but saw that the people who brought them here had already slipped away. "In the past, they were all like dogs, surrounding me and calling me 'Master, Master.' Now that we're in trouble, these scoundrels have gained power, and this is how they treat us!"
Qian Peilan didn't listen to what Huang Wenbai was saying at all. She looked around at the empty space and the fact that the room was visible from the hall, and panicked. "Master, where is this place? Ah? I don't want to stay here, I don't want to!"
Hearing Qian Peilan's words, Huang Wenbai also panicked. Not to mention that Qian Peilan had always lived a life of luxury, even he, after marrying Princess Yuru, wore fine clothes, ate delicacies, lived in luxurious mansions, traveled by carriage, and was surrounded by servants. Compared with his previous hard life, it was like a different world. Forty years had passed, and Huang Wenbai really felt that he was meant to live this kind of life. Now, seeing this dilapidated courtyard, he felt completely lost.
"I don't know either!" Huang Wenbai said with some difficulty. "I never knew the Hu family had such a courtyard!" Just like he never knew the Hu family had such a terrifying secret room, it seemed that he didn't know many things.
Yu Ru kept it a complete secret from him.
"I don't want to live here! I don't want to live here!" Qian Peilan completely broke down. In her eyes, this place was dilapidated and uninhabitable.
"Let's go!" Qian Peilan grabbed Huang Wenbai's hand tightly and pulled him outside. "Let's go out. You are Hu Mingmei's grandfather, you are the grandfather of the Prince of Chu. He can't become a prince and then abandon his grandfather. That's unfilial!"
Huang Wenbai followed Qian Peilan, but after taking two steps, he grabbed Qian Peilan's hand and pulled her back. His spirits collapsed. "Peilan, it's no use. He won't let me go. He has never treated me as his grandfather. All he feels for me is hatred."
Qian Peilan was filled with resentment. She couldn't kill Hu Mingmei, and she was powerless against him. Even her only son had died at Hu Mingmei's hands. She couldn't help but feel a surge of hatred in her heart, "That little bastard, I should have strangled him back then!"
Huang Wenbo quickly covered Qian Peilan's mouth, "Stop talking like that, stop talking like that!"
Qian Peilan couldn't help but think that Huang Wenbai was incredibly cowardly. This man had really gotten old and had lost all his courage. Just like how he schemed against Princess Yuru back then, scheming against a little bastard wouldn't be a difficult thing for him. Even someone as arrogant as Princess Yuru was outmaneuvered by them, let alone a little bastard.
But despite her thoughts, Qian Peilan wisely refrained from shouting. She simply mumbled, "Let me go!"
She secretly considered the possibilities and plans for various things.
The two stood at the door, unsure whether to go in or stay put. Qian Peilan was filled with resentment and worries, and whether she went in or not no longer mattered.
"Aren't you two going in yet? Are you waiting for us to invite you in?" Soon, Granny Wang arrived with their belongings: a bed, a table, two stools, and several pieces of coarse cotton and linen clothing. A large group of people followed behind them.
Wang Mama stood at the gate, raising an eyebrow to take in the surroundings. "Do you two still think of yourselves as masters and mistresses, waiting for us to deal with you?"
When Qian Peilan saw Wang Mama's mean-spirited manner, she was furious and immediately went to fight with Wang Mama. "You dog servant! Ever since Yu Ru died, this dog servant has never given me a kind look. More than 30 years have passed, and this servant is still the same."
Huang Wenbai grabbed her and said that it was something that ordinary people would not be able to tolerate. In the current situation, even Wang Mama, a servant, had more face than them. They couldn't afford to offend her, so they simply kept quiet and pretended not to hear.
Granny Wang was just teasing them a bit; it didn't interfere with her work. Seeing that Huang Wenbai had put up with it, she stopped arguing with them and directed a group of people to move their things inside. Before leaving, she left behind a young maid who looked about fifteen or sixteen years old.
"The Princess Consort is kind; you may keep this maidservant!" With that, she drifted away, infuriating Qian Peilan.
