Chapter 29 Pearls, oh pearls!

For several days in a row, Bai Nuo took care of Bai Yu, oh, and Chen Qiuling and Grandma. Bai Dalin had completely thrown her things out of her room. Grandma was also present when Bai Dalin threw her things out, but she didn't say anything. Instead, she said to Bai Nuo, "Nuonuo, don't blame your father. Your mother is pregnant and just went through something like this. She can't move. It's normal for your father to be nervous because he has a child late in life."

Having a child late in life? Bai Nuo sneered as she picked up her things, "Grandma, do you think I'm a fool?"

Grandma didn't know why Bai Nuo asked that question, but she never thought Bai Nuo was a fool. She thought Bai Nuo was just a little slow-witted, and she never thought that Bai Nuo was a stupid child.

"Why would Grandma think that I would think that Father had a son late in life? Even if Father had a son late in life, does that mean he would beat my brother for this child? Does he not want his other son anymore? Aren't my brother and I his children?" Although Bai Dalin had told her this before, it was a different story when she said it herself.

Who wants to be abandoned by their own father? Even if you got this father for free, it's still unpleasant.

"Also, Grandma, you've always told me how bad my father was, how he abandoned my mother, and how wicked Chen Qiuling was. Why are you saying good things about them today?"

"Nuo Nuo, you..." The old woman was stunned. She had never expected Bai Nuo to say such aggressive words. "How could you say that? He's your father, he's my son, we all depend on him!"

Bai Nuo nodded without saying anything. "Okay, he's your son. You should rely on him."

After talking to the old woman, Bai Nuo was busy every day, finding herbs for Bai Yu and doing housework. Yes, that's right, housework. Chen Qiuling was pregnant, the old woman was sick, and Chen Zhi was bedridden. Bai Dalin wanted to hand over all the housework to Bai Nuo and Bai Yu, but given Bai Yu's condition, moving around might worsen his condition. So Bai Nuo didn't let Bai Yu help and did everything herself. Every day she was exhausted, like a dog.

"Silly girl, what are you doing with this?" Early that morning, after making breakfast for the whole family, Bai Nuo took a bucket of clothes to the river to wash them. After washing them, she started scooping up river clams. When the older women saw her walking around touching them, they couldn't help but tease her, "Are you taking them home to keep or to have a baby?"

Bai Nuo, seemingly dull-witted, kept moving his hands and feet, saying, "Take it home and sell it for money."

"What an idiot! Here, take it home and have your baby." The woman washing clothes couldn't help but laugh. What an idiot! This thing looks like a rock; how could it possibly be sold for money?

"Take them all, take them all." Several middle-aged women threw clams at her and shooed her away, saying, "Don't muddy the water here, or I'll beat you up."

Bai Nuo washed the mud off the clam, then wrapped it in her clothes, put it in the clothes bucket, and left with it.

After Bai Nuo left, an older woman craned her neck to watch his retreating figure and sneered, "Tsk tsk, this Bai Nuo is so stupid, he doesn't recognize anything, yet he takes everything."

"That's just how it is. His father doesn't care about them, and his grandmother is so old," someone present said.

"Forget about her. We're so much happier without this idiot in our sugarcane field. Seeing her makes us unhappy. If she's this stupid, why doesn't she just die?"

After returning home, Bai Nuo did not go inside the house. Instead, he went to the dilapidated house where the three of them used to live, took a bucket, put the river mussels in it, added water to let them spit out the sand, and then took the clothes to hang out to dry.

After hanging up the clothes, Bai Nuo noticed that Bai Dalin wasn't there and Chen Qiuling was asleep, so she went to the dilapidated house and opened the river clams one by one.

When they moved to the Bai family's place, they didn't take all their belongings with them. A lot of things were still in the dilapidated house, which Bai Nuo found very convenient to use.

"Hey, there really is one..." After opening a clam, Bai Nuo immediately smiled. The clam shell was very large, and the meat only took up about a third of the space. But what surprised Bai Nuo was not the meat, but a small pearl on the meat, which was dazzling and bright in color.

Bai Nuo carefully plucked the pearl from the clam, washed and wiped it clean, and put it in her pocket. She had seen so many clams that day and wondered if there might be any pearls among them. Although she didn't have much hope, she never expected that there really would be.

"Sigh, it seems not every one has one." After getting the first pearl, Bai Nuo was extremely excited and worked extra hard, but after opening up the half-bucket of clams, he only got two pearls. However, he had a lot of clam meat.

"Never mind, let's make something delicious." Looking at the pile of river clam meat, Bai Nuo turned around and started washing it.

Did you know? For someone in hardship, everything they receive can be considered a gain. She's not one to complain; if she has pearls, she keeps them; if not, she eats meat.

Bai Nuo washed the river clam meat clean of mud and sand, rubbed it with salt several times, then cut the river clam meat in half, and went to pick some wild scallions.

The rice, oil, and salt were all taken from the Bai family, but Bai Nuo didn't dare to cook it at the Bai family's house. Instead, she secretly cooked it in this dilapidated house.

She didn't want to be discovered by Chen Qiuling and the old woman, so as not to cause unnecessary trouble.

Wash the rice thoroughly, put it in water and bring it to a boil over high heat, then simmer over low heat. When the rice is almost cooked, add the river clam meat and a little bit of white wine to remove the fishy smell. When it's done, sprinkle with chopped green onions and salt, then it's ready to serve.

The clam porridge was cooked to the perfect consistency, white and thick, with bright green scallions floating on top, emitting an enticing aroma. Bai Nuo was very confident in her cooking skills.

"Bai Nuo! Bai Nuo!" Just as she was about to take the porridge back, she heard a series of calls from outside. Startled, Bai Nuo instinctively dared not move.

How did that idiot Chen Zhi wake up?

Before he could think of a solution, Chen Zhi appeared at the door. When he saw Bai Nuo sitting on the wooden bed with a bowl of porridge in front of her, Chen Zhi was immediately enraged. He kicked her and yelled, "So, instead of cooking, you're sneaking food here? You've gone too far!"

Bai Nuo protected the porridge with one hand and grabbed a knife from a nearby spot with the other, holding it horizontally in front of Chen Zhi. "If you're just getting better and want to lie down again, just kick me!"

Chen Zhi is much better than his mother; dealing with Chen Zhi is as simple as fighting with a knife.
