Chapter 56 Chen Qiuling couldn't hold back any longer

That night, all was silent.

It was pitch black all around, so dark you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. Bai Nuo felt as if a huge rock was pressing on her chest, her heart was clenching painfully, as if she were suffocating.

It also resembles a dying fish.

"Huff...huff...huff..." Bai Nuo gasped for breath, feeling as if the world was spinning around her, her head was spinning, her vision was blurred, and her heart felt like it was going to jump out of her chest. She forced herself to wake up.

I suddenly opened my eyes and found myself in an unfamiliar environment.

The full moon hung in the sky, and a pale moonlight shone from afar, reflecting the shadow in front of Bai Nuo's eyes.

Tree,

They are all trees.

The forest was filled with towering trees, their canopies completely blocking out the moonlight. Bai Nuo was in the middle of the forest, able to see only a sliver of moonlight filtering through the leaves, barely a meter ahead. Beneath her feet lay a thick layer of leaves and branches; with each step, leaves and branches snapped with a cracking sound, eerie and terrifying in the silent night.

Where is this place?

Why is she here?

What's wrong with her?

Bai Nuo looked around, but all around was pitch black; he could neither go in nor back.

"Click"

"rustle"

The sounds of breaking branches and crunching leaves came simultaneously behind her. Bai Nuo turned around abruptly and shouted, "Who? Who's there?"

My heart was pounding.

Silence fell again, and Bai Nuo could hear her own heartbeat.

"Awoo..." A wolf howl echoed in the distance.

It turned out to be a wolf. Bai Nuo's heartbeat calmed down, and she breathed a sigh of relief.

For some reason, Bai Nuo remembered that wolves mostly howl during the full moon to call for their companions, search for food, and so on. There were wolves in this place, so Bai Nuo dared not make a sound, for fear of becoming food for the wolves.

"Girl!" Bai Nuo turned her head and a face suddenly loomed large in front of her. With a loud shout, Bai Nuo was so frightened that she took two meters back.

But the face kept closing in!

"Girl, I'd like to serve you like a slave, why won't you? Why?" the man roared, his eyes wide with anger. "Why won't you?"

That pale face, those familiar features—who else could it be but Hu Mingmei?

She only wanted money, and never wanted Hu Mingmei to be her servant. Seeing the suddenly appearing ferocious face, Bai Nuo was terrified and stammered backward as she explained, "I...I only wanted money, not for you to serve me. I didn't save you for nothing."

Footsteps, wolf howls, and even the occasional cawing of crows mingled with Hu Mingmei's roar, creating an exceptionally terrifying atmosphere.

Hu Mingmei pressed closer, his tall stature forcing Bai Nuo to look up at him. The moonlight stretched his shadow long, casting it behind Bai Nuo like a monster about to devour her.

"Caw caw... caw caw..." A huge crow flew over the forest, cawing loudly. The crow's cawing grew more and more intense as Hu Mingmei pressed closer and closer.

Bai Nuo swallowed hard, staring at his ferocious expression. "I didn't mean to. I returned your jade pendant to you without hesitation, didn't I?"

If she only cared about money and disregarded human life, she wouldn't have returned the jade pendant to him.

Hu Mingmei walked closer and closer, almost touching Bai Nuo's face. "You did this on purpose! You despise me, yet you still make me go catch fish!"

Bai Nuo's heart skipped a beat as she watched Hu Mingmei's wide-open mouth transform into a giant fish head in an instant—the body remained the same, but the head had become a fish head.

Hu Mingmei, with a fish head and a human body!

The fish opened and closed its mouth, uttering chilling words, "I drowned, I died, and I'm going to eat you! I'll make you pay with your life!"

The fish lunged at Bai Nuo with its mouth open, and Bai Nuo turned and ran!

Hu Mingmei, with a fish head and a human body, was hot on his heels. Bai Nuo ran swiftly, making a "hoarse" sound as if she was about to run out of breath. The branches and leaves under her feet rustled. Behind her, Hu Mingmei's footsteps were relentlessly pursuing her.

"Ah!" In the distance, there was a flash of light. Bai Nuo thought she had run out of the forest, but unexpectedly, she stepped off the cliff and fell like a falling arrow.

She tumbled and rolled in the air, face up and back down, her long, thick black hair cascading down her back, her robes fluttering and rustling.

The moonlight enveloped her entire body, and everything became clear at that moment. She saw that just as she fell, Hu Mingmei, with a fish head and a human body, fell down like an arrow released from a bow!

"Ah!" Bai Nuo saw Hu Mingmei come down as well and immediately shouted, which startled her awake.

Looking around, it was pitch black, but it was a place familiar to Bai Nuo. She was still in the Bai family home—it was just a dream after all. Bai Nuo reached out and wiped her forehead, which was covered in sweat.

Why would I dream about Hu Mingmei out of the blue? And such a terrible dream at that. Does he die if he gets wet?

"Did you have a nightmare?" A faint female voice suddenly rang out from outside the mosquito net. Bai Nuo's heart, which had already been frightened several times, clenched again. Upon closer inspection, it was Chen Qiuling.

The white moonlight shone through the window, enveloping Chen Qiuling in a silvery-white glow. Her long hair was gathered behind her ears, and she wore no hair ornaments. Her oval face was delicate and three-dimensional, and she wore a red inner garment, which revealed her somewhat plump figure.

"What are you doing here?" Bai Nuo asked coldly. Who was she trying to scare with her long hair and red clothes in the middle of the night?

"Shh!" Chen Qiuling stretched out her slender finger and put it to her red lips, gently shushing, "Don't wake your grandma. I'm here today to have a heart-to-heart talk with you."

Bai Nuo stared blankly at Chen Qiuling. Why was she here so late at night instead of sleeping to confide in her? Was she sleepwalking?

"During the day, the doctor told me that my fetus was stable and that it was a girl," Chen Qiuling said softly. Her tone was gentle and her voice was beautiful, like the most melodious natural music in the mountains, tinkling and melodious.

Bai Nuo then vaguely remembered that Chen Qiuling was already three months pregnant, no wonder she looked a bit plump.

“You know your father loves me, and he'll love this child too.” Chen Qiuling lifted the mosquito net, her slender hand resting on Bai Nuo's shoulder as she gazed at her. “I already have a son, so whether I have another son or not doesn't matter anymore, but…”

Chen Qiuling slowly moved her hand, finally touching Bai Nuo's neck. "Whether my child is a boy or a girl, you and Bai Yu are superfluous. You'd better behave, or I'll sell you!"
