Chapter 6 Life Needs an Assist

006

Bai Nuo sometimes felt that the power of the people was truly immense. No matter what you do, you shouldn't offend anyone unnecessarily. When she saw Ms. Chen, she wanted to ask her for some money to improve her life. After all, her family consisted of an elderly person, a young child, and herself, an outsider unfamiliar with the local environment. Without money, they really couldn't survive.

However, when Bai Nuo had this idea, she thought it might not work, after all, Ms. Chen was not a good person. But, Bai Nuo did not expect that her matter would go so smoothly, all thanks to Aunt Liu.

Aunt Liu grabbed Ms. Chen's purse from her waist and weighed it in her hand, making an exceptionally loud noise that could be heard not only by the women washing clothes in the area but also by those in the distance. As soon as they heard Aunt Liu shouting, everyone stopped and looked in their direction, as if she and Ms. Chen were fighting.

“Oh dear, ten taels of silver is enough for those grandmother and grandchildren to eat. If I were you, I would give them the money. It would be much more practical, and they could buy whatever they want to eat.” Aunt Liu put down Ms. Chen’s purse and sincerely offered her advice.

Ms. Chen's face stiffened even more after she said she hadn't brought a purse. She was so angry she wanted to kill Aunt Liu. Who would want to give money to this fool? It would be better to throw the money into the water and at least hear a splash. But now that Aunt Liu had said that, she couldn't argue back. She could only smile and try to save face, "Nono, do you want money or should Mom take you home for dinner?"

They completely ignored Aunt Liu.

Bai Nuo looked a bit dazed and said in a low voice, "I want money to buy food for Grandma."

Ms. Chen's smile almost disappeared. This fool, so insistent, does she even know what money is?

"Nono, let's go and invite your grandma and your little brother over for dinner later." Ms. Chen simply didn't want to pay the money.

Bai Nuo was very insistent, still looking silly, pouting as she said, "Grandma's feet hurt..."

"Oh, sister, you shouldn't be so stingy with your money. Even if you don't live together now, she's still your mother-in-law. Even if you don't care about the two children, you should at least care about your husband. An old woman raising two children alone, who else can she rely on if not you?" Aunt Liu exclaimed, looking at Ms. Chen with disdain. She had already told her husband that this young widow was no good, but he wouldn't believe her. Now it was proven, wasn't it? Her mother-in-law had broken her foot, and she wouldn't even spend money to treat it. No matter how beautiful she was, if she wasn't filial, it was all for nothing.

“What my sister-in-law says is true…” Ms. Chen seized the opportunity and handed the purse from her waist to Bai Nuo, “Nuonuo, don’t waste the money, take it back to Grandma, okay?”

Aunt Liu was getting impatient with Ms. Chen's nagging. "Why are you pretending to be a good person? If you really wanted to give her money, why did you say you didn't have any?" she said. "Nuonuo isn't a child anymore. She's a thirteen-year-old girl. She can tell the difference. Nuonuo, hurry home. Your grandma has been waiting for a long time."

Then, in a few quick movements, they scrubbed and washed Bai Nuo's clothes clean, and as if afraid that Ms. Chen would change her mind, they put Bai Nuo's clothes into the bucket and chased Bai Nuo away.

Bai Nuo took the money, nodded to Aunt Liu, and went upstairs in a daze. As she left, she heard Aunt Liu say, "Little sister, you won't blame me for meddling, will you?"
