Upon hearing Bai Dalin's words, the plump woman's thick lips curled up and down. "What beads? Miss is looking for beads? How come I don't know?" Her meaning was that she didn't want Bai Dalin to go in.
As the fat woman spoke, spittle sprayed all over Bai Dalin's face. Bai Dalin watched helplessly as this disgusting woman spit in his face, but since he was begging to be let in, he had no choice but to endure it, to put on a smiling face despite the disgusting fat woman. "It's just some kind of bead for making bracelets! Wasn't Miss looking for it the other day? Now that I've found it, I'm bringing it to her!"
The plump woman looked down at Bai Dalin with disdain, saying, "I don't know how you got into the magistrate's mansion, but it's not a place where just anyone can come in. "I'm not an outsider!" Bai Dalin said with a smile. "I work in this mansion. I come here every day and have been working here for a long time. Good sister, please be kind and let me in." As he spoke, Bai Dalin secretly slipped five taels of silver to the plump woman.
That silver was his wages for a month, and also his living expenses during this period. Now it had all been given to a fat woman, and Bai Dalin was heartbroken.
"Working here?" The fat woman looked Bai Dalin up and down suspiciously. Seeing Bai Dalin's handsome face, she was immediately tempted and felt a ticklish sensation. If you delay the delivery of the beads, I will definitely tell Miss and give you eighty lashes!"
When the fat woman saw Bai Dalin suddenly become fierce, she immediately stopped acting arrogantly, took two steps back, and moved from the middle of the doorway to the side. "Come with me," she said, and then led the way.
"Hmph!" Bai Dalin flicked his sleeves, gave a heavy snort, and followed the fat woman inside.
The fat woman led Bai Dalin for a while before stopping. She was the kind of person who bullied the weak and feared the strong; otherwise, she wouldn't have been a gatekeeper for several years after entering the county magistrate's office. Now that Bai Dalin was fierce, the fat woman didn't dare to look at him anymore and lowered her head, muttering, "This is the young lady's courtyard. Please go in."
Bai Dalin, a commoner from the countryside, had only ever seen the most luxurious place in the village chief's house. Now that the fat woman was telling Bai Dalin to go in by himself, how could Bai Dalin dare to go in? But remembering that the fat woman had just molested him, Bai Dalin couldn't back down. He could only pretend to be calm and said, "How can I, a man, enter Miss's courtyard at will? Wouldn't that damage Miss's reputation? Go and find Miss's maid, Cui'er, and tell her that the pearl has been found and someone has come to present a treasure!"
Seeing Bai Dalin's aggressive demeanor, the fat woman became even more frightened. She did whatever Bai Dalin told her to do without daring to object. She regretted not being able to control her lustful desires and touching the man's face, fearing that Bai Dalin would retaliate. Bai Dalin told her to go inside and find Cui'er, and the fat woman immediately went.
After the fat woman went inside, Bai Dalin stood there, greedily looking at the courtyard in front of him. This courtyard is really nice. If he had a courtyard like this, he would definitely live there with Chen Qiuling every day. Oh, and their son too. The three of them would live there every day, happily together!
As Bai Dalin was looking around, he was startled awake by a series of footsteps. When he came to his senses, he saw a girl in green leading a fat woman briskly towards him.
"Is it him?" the girl in green asked.
Bai Dalin heard the fat woman say, "Miss Cui'er, it's him. This man says he has the pearl he wants."
So this was Cui'er. Bai Dalin quickly cupped his hands in greeting, "Miss Cui'er, I've come to present the pearl to Miss!"
Didn't Miss already tell the servants in the manor yesterday that she wasn't looking for the beads? I heard from this fat woman that this man also works in the manor, so why is she still looking for them? Cui'er looked at Bai Dalin with doubt, but then she thought that if this man really had beads, she could give them to Miss. Miss likes these beads so much, so a little more is always good.
Perhaps we could make another bracelet so the young lady could wear it interchangeably; she would surely be delighted.
Thinking this, Cui'er said, "Alright, come with me. But let's make this clear first. Miss means that there will be a reward only if you find a bead that she is satisfied with. It's not that you will be rewarded just for bringing a bead, understand? If Miss is not satisfied, there will be no reward either."
