Chapter 5 Some are virtuous, some pretend to be stupid

It's no wonder Aunt Liu was unhappy. In the memories left to Bai Nuo by the original owner, she always called this aunt "Auntie," meaning she and Ms. Chen were of the same generation. Ms. Chen had made her sound old—well, although this auntie doesn't look young either, you can't be so obvious, right? No wonder she was unhappy.

Ms. Chen didn't mind; in her eyes, there wasn't another woman in the village as beautiful as her. Ms. Chen put down the wooden basin, rolled up her trousers, and waded into the river. With light steps, she reached Bai Nuo's side without making a splash—Bai Nuo was once again stunned.

"Nono, go ashore, Mom will wash your clothes for you," Ms. Chen said gently, her face tender, as she picked up Bai Nuo's clothes.

Outside, Ms. Chen has always been gentle and kind, treating her husband's two children from his previous marriage as if they were her own. The only ones who are immature are Bai Nuo and Bai Yu, the siblings.

"Nono's hungry." Bai Nuo blurted out three words out of the blue. Ms. Chen's hand paused, and Aunt Liu's movements also stopped. Then, Aunt Liu let out a thunderous voice, "Oh my, what time is it? Bai Nuo, you haven't eaten yet? Good heavens, how can a child grow if you don't eat?"

You're not with Bai Nuo, how do you know if she's eaten? Maybe she's eaten but is hungry again? Ms. Chen still had that gentle smile on her face, and she had already taken the clothes Bai Nuo brought and was washing them. She said softly, "Nuonuo, be good, I'll take you home for dinner after I finish washing the clothes."

"Grandma is sick, her feet hurt, and she has no food to eat." Bai Nuo remained as dazed as ever.

"Oh dear, I'm not saying this to be mean..." Aunt Liu was delighted to see Ms. Chen make a fool of herself. Bai Nuo was mentally challenged and couldn't speak clearly, but she wasn't stupid. She would speak for Bai Nuo. "Sister, your mother-in-law and these two children are so pitiful. A few days ago, I ran into your mother-in-law on the mountain to chop firewood. She said she twisted her ankle and was limping. If you ask me, you shouldn't bring them home. They don't live with you anyway. You might as well give them some money to see a doctor."

Ms. Chen's face stiffened. "I didn't bring any money." She didn't really want to give Bai Nuo and the others any money, not even a bite to eat. She only said that to Bai Nuo to leave a good impression on her. Once they were on the river, who knew who they were?

Aunt Liu pointed to Ms. Chen's waist and said, "Look, isn't this your purse? There's quite a bit of money in it, isn't there?"
