Chapter 14: Playing with Disguise

In the dead of night in late autumn, Zheng Quchi was carried outdoors from the warm charcoal room. As the damp chill crept onto his skin, he shivered from the cold.

She opened her eyes groggily, feeling the blurry scenery rushing past her.

Zheng Quchi's eyes widened, and he instantly came to his senses.

The woods were like a canopy, with branches and leaves spreading out, and the bright autumn daytime light was now soaked in a deathly glare, giving people a somewhat eerie and creepy feeling.

In this situation, Zheng Quchi's first reaction was to clench his teeth and poke his chest, which was about to be dented, with his hand.

She was so thin that her sternum pressed painfully against the other person's bony shoulder blades.

Where are you taking me?

Seeing that the other person had woken up but did not scream or struggle violently out of fear, Wei Yao, the kidnapper, was somewhat surprised.

He was just wondering whether, if she was too talkative, he should seal her speech acupoints or simply knock her unconscious with a single blow.

But now, it seems like none of those things have been omitted.

He was still somewhat disappointed.

Having traveled from the modern world and accumulated knowledge from various movies and books about kidnappers and abductors, Zheng Quchi could naturally guess their psychology and therefore could not give them such an opportunity.

“You’re from the camp, aren’t you?” she said with certainty.

Wei Yao, whose face was covered, was startled, wondering how she had guessed. Instead of answering, she asked, "Do you know the person chasing after us?"

Is someone behind us?

Zheng Quchi's vision was affected by the dim environment, which was equivalent to severe myopia. Therefore, she could not see who was chasing her at all, but she thought of someone.

Her watcher—Autumn Boy.

"So what if we know each other, or so what if we don't?" she echoed him.

Wei Yao smiled.

This cunning little black mouse.

"Why don't you try to resist? Maybe that person will arrive in time to save you."

Does she think she's stupid? Knowing that someone is pursuing her, he calmly discusses these things with her, clearly not taking her seriously.

"Forget it, I'm all skin and bones, what if I fall and hurt myself?"

"You're being modest; you're clearly a short, stocky man."

Zheng Quchi choked: "..."

Why does this sentence sound so familiar?

Wei Yao's fox-like eyes curved into a smile, a hint of coldness in them: "It's quite an achievement that he's been able to follow me for so long, but it's a pity that his lack of tact might disturb you, so I have no choice but to let him stay here."

Zheng Quchi understood what he meant, opened his mouth, but ultimately said nothing.

Wei Yao stopped, picked a tall tree, and leaped up. He stood there holding his breath and waiting. After a moment, he heard rustling sounds below.

He held a thin, willow-leaf-shaped blade between two fingers and shot it out with lightning speed. With a "thud," it pierced flesh, and the person below groaned and fell to the ground.

A faint smell of blood spread through the air.

Throughout the entire process, Zheng Quchi kept her eyes down and her whole body tense, but she did not utter a sound.

Wei Yao smiled knowingly: "That's your enemy?"

Are we enemies?

Well, he killed "Qing Ge'er," and his existence was dangerous and troublesome for her.

If she doesn't want to end up like "Brother Qing," the best way is to make him disappear.

"no."

That's all she could say.

Wei Yao didn't say much, and carried her as they ran through the forest.

Around the time when her hands and feet were numb with cold, they finally reached the edge of the forest. As the towering, dark silhouettes were left behind, they were greeted by the leaping moonlight and a sky full of stars.

A cool breeze blew by, rustling the shadows of the trees. In the middle of the cliff and ravine, a person stood.

He stood with his hands behind his back, gazing at the distant grove of trees. His white robes, made of a light and thin material favored by lay Buddhists, revealed his graceful neck. The flowing robes gave him an ethereal and otherworldly appearance, even just looking at his back.

A red veil extends from her eyes to the back of her head, lightly draped like a misty, ethereal silk gauze, fluttering gracefully in the breeze.

hiss!

What a beautiful picture of a woman under the moon.

When Zheng Quchi saw him, he was so excited that he blurted out.

It's you!

Wei Yao gave her a few strange glances. Having completed his mission, he bowed to Yuwen Sheng and then quietly withdrew.

Yuwen Sheng: "You really want to see me?"

These words were neither too harsh nor too mild, for the faint smile carried a hint of ambiguity, and the captivating glint in his eyes seemed capable of stealing one's heartbeat.

"That box!" She rushed forward, her eyes pleading with a glimmer of hope, and asked, "Did you give it to Yuwen Sheng?"

Yuwen Sheng looked at her, staring at her for a moment through the veil, and smiled slightly: "How dare you so presumptuously address General Yuwen by his given name? Aren't you afraid of him?"

Didn't you not care at all before?

Why did she suddenly become so anxious and ask questions? Did she find out something afterward, or was someone behind her instructing her?

However, he thought she would start to suspect his identity because of the Nine-Dragon Mechanism Box, but she mistakenly thought he was Yuwen Sheng's man and even handed over the opened box.

With a change of heart, he felt that things were getting more and more interesting.

Zheng Quchi woke up immediately after being touched by him.

She realized this wasn't modern times, and everyone seemed to fear power. Besides, although Yuwen Sheng was somewhat cruel, he was the guardian deity of Ye Kingdom. She thought it was an ordinary title, but to others it might be offensive.

She readily agreed and immediately changed her form of address: "This matter is urgent. Have you given that box to General Yuwen?"

Being pragmatic is one of her small virtues.

Yuwen Sheng smiled, inexplicably finding her obedient and really well-behaved.
