Chapter 19 The Family's Predicament

She's Zheng Quchi's sister, how dare they bully her!

She knew that although her younger sister was intellectually disabled, she was always obedient and gentle, and never caused trouble on her own initiative!

If there's a mistake, it's always someone else's fault!

She rushed over in a few steps, grabbed the wrist of one of the girls who was pulling her braid, and hoisted her up.

Her eyes turned cold, and she bared her fangs: "What are you doing? Are you bullying us?"

A shadow fell over the little boy's head, and when he looked at the dark face of Bao Gong that was looming close, his eyes widened in surprise.

"Whoa—the black guy is back! Everyone run!"

Zheng Quchi's forehead veins bulged; these mischievous kids.

Running away? There's no such thing as a free lunch.

With quick reflexes, she pulled the running children back one by one.

Then, with a cold face, she would retaliate by making their hair look like a chicken coop, and then order them to stand there throwing sand at each other, and to sing the vicious song she had made up before to each other.

They weren't allowed to stop unless she told them to.

Zheng Quchi was strong and had a fierce appearance. The children were a bunch of bullies who preyed on the weak and feared the strong. After being intimidated by her, they dared not disobey.

They were all crying terribly, yet dared not resist.

The terrified Sang Yaomei finally snapped out of her daze at how her second brother had descended from the sky and punished those who had bullied her, and immediately burst into tears of grievance.

"Waaaaah—Second Brother—"

Sang Yaomei hugged Zheng Quchi tightly, crying so hard that tears and snot smeared all over her.

She knelt down, touched her cold little face, wiped away her tears, and whispered, "Don't cry, don't cry. Little sister, why are you here all alone? Where's your big brother?"

"Big brother, big brother..."

Zheng Quchi was startled. Could it be that his elder brother had been—

"Clang!" Something was smashed behind him. Zheng Quchi turned around and saw Brother Sang, who was disheveled and had a look of surprise and joy on his face.

"Qing-ge'er..."

"Big brother!"

She happily picked up Sang Yaomei and ran to him. He had tears in his eyes and was patting her shoulder, saying repeatedly, "It's good that you're back, it's good that you're back."

"Not only am I back, but I've also made money. It doesn't matter that our house burned down; I'll rebuild a better house for you to live in," Zheng Quchi hurriedly told him the good news.

Brother Sang paused for a moment, then shook his head with a wry smile.

Rebuilding a house is not that simple.

But not wanting to dampen her enthusiasm, he could only reply, "As long as you come back safely, that's all that matters. We can talk about the house later."

No rush?

This is an extremely urgent matter.

If they don't build houses, where will they live?

Oh right, Zheng Quchi suddenly remembered: "Big brother, where have you and little sister been staying these past few days?"

Brother Sang froze, opened his mouth, but couldn't say anything for a moment.

Sang Yaomei, however, sobbed and pouted, "My older brother and I live in the pigsty, it stinks so badly."

Upon hearing this, Zheng Quchi felt a sudden pang of pain in his heart.

Seeing that Brother Sang's face immediately turned awkward and embarrassed, she tried her best not to show any unusual expression.

She gently patted Sang Yaomei's head and said in a vow-like tone, "With Second Brother here, we will soon have a big house to live in, we will have enough to eat and wear, and we will live a good life."

Upon hearing this, Sang Yaomei immediately felt less sad.

"Really? We'll have houses to live in, and we'll have enough to eat, and we won't have to drink thin water anymore? Little sister is so happy."

Children are naive and believe whatever they are told, but Brother Sang is an adult. He only thought that Brother Qing was just trying to make the child happy.

"The house does need to be rebuilt, but keep it simple. There are too many places where you'll need to spend money in the future, so save what you earn to help with your dowry when you get married."

Marrying?

He's a parent who worries about things that go quite far ahead.

"Let's talk about this later."

Seeing that they were chatting, the mischievous child forgot about them and ran away as fast as he could.

Brother Sang knew immediately what had happened. He would bring his sister Sang to the village entrance every day to wait for Brother Qing to return. Earlier, his sister said she was hungry, so he went to find something to eat. He never expected that in such a short time, she would be bullied by the village children.

He patted Sang Yaomei's head guiltily: "It's because of your older brother, I'm incompetent..."

Zheng Quchi didn't want him to blame himself, so he changed the subject: "Brother, how did the house catch fire?"

Brother Sang glanced at the village entrance and saw that people were gradually gathering there. He didn't answer, but said, "I'll talk to you later. Let's go first."

——

They returned to the thatched hut, which had been burned to a pile of ruins. Next to it were piles of blackened, broken bowls, jars, and other miscellaneous items, which Brother Sang had retrieved from inside afterward.

As for other clothing, cotton wadding, and wooden furniture, they were all burned to ashes.

These days, without a roof over our heads, it gets so cold that it's hard to breathe as soon as it gets dark.

Brother Sang was proud and embarrassed to trouble others with his child, so he took his daughter Sang into the pigsty to keep warm at night. Little did he know that this would attract all kinds of ridicule and disdain from the villagers.

But when Zheng Quchi returned, she vowed never to let them live like that again.

She took her older brother and younger sister to knock on the door next door, and a young man came out to answer it.

It was Brother Yang who had relayed the message to Zheng Quchi before.

"Brother Yang, excuse me, I don't know if you have any spare rooms. Our house burned down, and my brother, sister, and I would like to stay here for a while."

Brother Yang was stunned for a moment. He glanced at Brother Sang, his eyes somewhat evasive.

"this……"

Zheng Quchi took out a string of copper coins.

"Of course, we won't stay for free. I wonder if this money is enough?"

Brother Yang's eyes widened, his expression changed, and he immediately smiled and said, "Oh, no, no, we have rooms. Come in quickly, it's quite chilly outside."
