"By the way, how are you going to get in touch with Runtu and the others?" Zheng Quchi asked Fatty Huai, turning his head to the side.
Fatty Huai quickly told her, "The commander will notify us by blowing a whistle. Three short whistles usually indicate an emergency, while three short and two long whistles mean there is no problem. We will wait at the agreed place, and the commander will contact us on his own initiative."
Zheng Quchi nodded in understanding.
Bei Bei hesitated for a moment, then said, "Madam, we'll keep an eye on things up there. Why don't you go down and keep the general company? We'll report any developments immediately."
Zheng Quchi was also a little worried about leaving Yuwen Sheng, an injured man, alone in the carriage. After thinking for a moment, she nodded and said with a smile, "Alright, then I'll trouble you to take good care of him. But it would be best to take advantage of this free time to rest well, as we don't know what unexpected situations we might encounter on the road ahead."
This was the first time that Fatty Huai and his three companions had ever seen someone like Madam.
She was nothing like a general's wife. She didn't have the arrogance of a noblewoman looking down on commoners, nor did she have the barriers and boundaries that come with her status. There was always a comfortable feeling about her.
Just like meeting familiar relatives and friends, chatting and laughing, there's no need to deliberately get close. As soon as she smiles, they feel a natural and special urge to confide in her.
At the same time, she is also an admirable and respectable person. She never boasts or shows off how great she is, but when she is needed, she becomes particularly mature and steady, and becomes their backbone without them even realizing it.
So how can someone be so approachable yet so remarkable?
"We understand, thank you for your concern, Madam."
Liao Tai and the others responded in unison, returning the gesture with a smile.
With such a general's wife by his side, they all began to look forward to life in the camp in the future. Who knows, this little solar energy of the wife might bring about some different changes for the general.
Unlike before, it won't be all coldness and cruelty, where there's no warmth in the military camp, and everything will just be ironclad rules and regulations.
——
Zheng Quchi returned to the carriage and saw Yuwen Sheng leaning against the window, his profile superior, calmly and profoundly gazing at the water and wetland scenery flashing by outside the window.
She immediately went over: "How can you stand in the cold wind like this? What if..."
She didn't finish her sentence; she simply walked past him and reached out to close the car window.
As soon as she turned around, she saw Yuwen Sheng looking at her with a strange and peculiar gaze.
"You haven't smiled at me in a long time. Didn't you used to smile as soon as you saw me?"
Zheng Quchi: "..."
She laughed before because Wang Zebang said he didn't like women laughing. She thought that if she laughed more, he wouldn't be able to stand it, but she didn't expect him to be so patient and keep quiet.
But now he suddenly wants to see her laugh. Is he deliberately trying to make her unhappy?
She forced a smile, her small, white teeth appearing in crescent shape: "Is that so?"
"no."
Yuwen Sheng narrowed his eyes and said directly.
"What time is it now? How can I possibly laugh?" Zheng Quchi plopped down opposite him, his laughter fading away.
"Weren't you laughing happily up there just now?" he asked calmly.
Zheng Quchi paused, her eyes darting around, unable to recall if she had just laughed, let alone laughed so happily. She rubbed her nose: "Did you laugh?"
He said with certainty, "He laughed."
"And you're still laughing happily?" she asked again.
"That's right."
"Oh, that's not my fault. Someone must have made me laugh. I wouldn't laugh randomly on my own," Zheng Quchi said innocently.
Yuwen Sheng smiled gently: "Then I'll make you laugh, will you laugh?"
Zheng Quchi was certain; he must have had a relapse, otherwise why would he do something so pointless?
"Give it a try," she replied casually.
However, the "living Yama" could also make people laugh, and she was really looking forward to it.
Yuwen Sheng suddenly pulled her close and hugged her. Zheng Quchi instinctively tried to struggle, but he held her firmly in his arms.
"What are you doing? Let me go."
She tried to push him away, but felt a wetness on her palm. She immediately froze: "You...you're bleeding?"
"Struggle a little longer, and see if you can make me bleed to death." He chuckled softly upon hearing her exclamation.
This madman can still laugh at a time like this.
Zheng Quchi rolled his eyes but didn't move. "Go ahead and hug me. It won't hurt me to hug you."
"Cheek, there's no time left..."
He suddenly spoke in a low, hoarse voice.
"What?"
We...are running out of time.
Yuwen Sheng rested his chin lightly on her shoulder, his gaze lingering absently out the car window. Then, he smiled and asked, "Qu Chi, if I die, I will give you all my wealth, mansions, and fertile land. You will inherit everything I have, okay?"
Zheng Quchi was dumbfounded after hearing his words.
Her first thought was how much wealth a general's mansion could possibly have, but then she slapped herself awake: "What are you talking about?"
"You like gold and silver, don't you?"
Isn't this just asking her directly if she likes money?
Zheng Quchi didn't think there was anything wrong with his hobby, so he frankly said, "Yes, I like money, but what does that have to do with you?"
A gentleman loves money, but he acquires it in a proper way. She's not going to eat someone else's inheritance, so why would she covet it?
