"Have some tea. I noticed your lips were chapped downstairs." Liu Fengmian pushed the tea he had poured toward her.
So that cup of warm tea was for her.
Zheng Quchi's tone immediately softened. She was indeed a little thirsty, but, my friend, this was someone else's room, and the tea was someone else's. You didn't even ask the host before taking over without any politeness. Even if you dared to pour it, I couldn't just drink it.
"...I won't drink it."
Seeing her glaring at him, Liu Fengmian brushed the table, propped his chin on his elbow, and smiled at her, saying, "I'll have more energy after sitting for a while. Then we can take turns carrying her. Little sister doesn't look heavy, but she's not light after being carried for a long time."
Zheng Quchi realized that this person was talking about other things and was clearly determined to join in the fun. He figured no one would want to leave no matter what.
Seeing that Zheng Quchi was being led astray by Liu Fengmian because of Sang Yaomei, and not wanting her attention to be diverted, Gongshu Jiruo suggested, "Chizi, you can put Yaomei on my couch..."
Before he could finish speaking, Liu Fengmian interrupted him again, saying emphatically, "No, my little sister might wake up suddenly at any time. If we leave her alone on the bed, it will only cause more trouble if she makes a fuss. You said you could remove the curse, sir? She's right here. Why don't you take a look first?"
Reminded by Liu Fengmian, Zheng Quchi immediately returned to the main topic, eagerly seeking confirmation from him: "Master Gongshu, do you really know how to cure Gu poison?"
Gongshu Daren was momentarily speechless. He asked, "Are you looking for a doctor who can cure Gu poison? Is it for Sang Yaomei?"
“That’s right, she was poisoned by the Mo family. Her mental impairment was not due to any illness, but because she was murdered!” Zheng Quchi’s face was full of resentment when he mentioned this.
In the end, Gongshu Jiruo told her the truth: "Child, I do not know how to break the curse, but I do know who does."
"Who?" she pressed.
“My second uncle, Gongshu Bai, is skilled in this kind of thing.”
After listening, Zheng Quchi's expression changed from her previous eagerness. She seemed to understand something and stared at Gongshu Jiruo with a probing look: "What are your conditions?"
Her eyes were too bright and clear, and it was precisely because of these eyes that Gongshu Jiruo's turbid and filthy heart was highlighted. He looked away with a slightly embarrassed look: "Come back with me. Back then, it was Yuwen Sheng who forced you to go with him, right? You have always been willing to go back to Beiyuan with me, haven't you?"
Even now, he still holds this self-deceiving belief.
Zheng Quchi lied to him in order to escape Julu Kingdom, but now she has to tell the truth: "I don't want to. Everything I said before was a lie, a complete deception."
Upon hearing this, both men's expressions changed simultaneously.
One went from being sarcastic to beaming with joy, while the other was inwardly bewildered and panicked.
Seeing that she was indeed talking about "serious matters," and understanding that she was afraid of waking the child and had to deliberately lower her voice, which could easily affect her momentum and performance, Liu Fengmian silently walked over, very gently and considerately reached out to hug Yaomei, and quietly stepped aside, letting her continue... torturing this third party who was planning to steal her husband.
"You're lying to me?" Gongshu Jiruo was like someone living in his own perfect world, powerless in the face of the crumbling ruins.
His Adam's apple bobbed a few times, and he asked in a hoarse voice, "You said you would return to Beiyuan with me. Now that Yuwen Sheng is dead, what are you still doing in Ye?"
He believed that the only reason she stayed in Ye was because of Yuwen Sheng.
Mentioning Yuwen Sheng, Zheng Quchi's eyes suddenly sharpened. She said, "Gongshu Jiruo, let me ask you something. Do you know a weapon called the Steel Tripod Machine?"
Gongshu Jiruo seemed to hear a faint echo from drowning. It took him a while to react before he said, "I know."
"Have you seen that team with steel jacks and wearing blue cloaks?" she asked again.
After staring at the cold air for a long while, Gongshu Jiruo finally turned his gaze to Zheng Quchi's face and said, "What you really want to ask is, is it that I sent someone to kill Yuwen Sheng, right?"
Zheng Quchi did not deny it. Now that the matter had been brought up, she asked directly, "So, it was you?"
At this moment, Gongshu Jiruo felt as if a fire was burning in his heart, or as if a block of ice was radiating extreme cold. Faced with her extreme interrogation of him for Yuwen Sheng's sake, the dark fire rising in his heart forced him to speak vengefully, "Yes."
"Is it really you?"
Zheng Quchi's eyes widened. Although she had already guessed and investigated from various sources, she still wanted to ask him directly and clearly so as not to wrong him because of suspicion and misunderstanding.
But now, there is nothing left to be unclear.
"...If you hadn't sent people to assist Mo Ye's pursuit team, Yuwen Sheng wouldn't have died."
She shot and seriously wounded Mo Ye, and the pursuing team was already in disarray. The remaining group was not in a situation where Yuwen Sheng was certain to die. However, all of this changed because of Gongshu Ji Ruo.
"Is that so?" Gongshu Jiruo asked with a hint of sarcasm.
“It was me. It was because I was soft-hearted that I repeatedly stopped him from killing you…” Zheng Quchi’s eyes reddened.
Gongshu Jiruo's hand tightened: "You regret it?"
"He once said that if he died, he would take me with him, and I actually believed him at the time. But until the very end... he was protecting me and making sure I could live on."
Seeing her moved by Yuwen Sheng, Gongshu Jiruo felt even more panicked than before when she learned that he had killed Yuwen Sheng: "Zheng Quchi, stop thinking about it. Yuwen Sheng is dead. He was a man who planned every step of the way and was very cunning. How much of what he did was from his heart and how much was from an instinctive means, he probably didn't even know. Don't think too highly of him."
