Chapter 285 Building a Fortress (Part 1)

——

The day for the six kingdoms' military trial was fast approaching. This time, the Ye Kingdom, as the organizer, designated the venue and arranged the main battlefield at the Golden Egret Hunting Ground behind the royal palace. This place encompassed grasslands, hillsides, cliffs, lakes, and forests, covering a vast area.

The six armies participating in this trial were already fully prepared. Since the terrain had been selected beforehand, each of the six nations occupied a different area: those skilled in ambush chose the forest, those skilled in attack chose the grassland, and those skilled in surprise attacks chose the hillside...

In short, flags of various colors, some bright and some solemn, fluttered in the wind above the Golden Egret Hunting Ground.

Military trials have always had restrictions on the number of troops deployed. The six unified states each deployed 6,000 troops, and the types of troops could be allocated independently. However, no more than 300 large-scale lethal weapons were allowed, and archers and cavalry were not included. The main purpose was to plan, deploy, and arrange troops, and to showcase the cutting-edge technology and defense weaponry of each state.

In addition, each party can decide for itself whether to attack or defend – the attacking party wins once it captures the opponent's camp, and the defending party wins once it holds out until the end.

"So, what about us? Attack or defend?"

As the logistics adjutant for this military trial in Ye Kingdom, Zheng Quchi had a heavy responsibility, so she went with Yuan Xingzhou to the Armory early yesterday morning to select a set of combat equipment.

She wore a dark red armor set. For ease of movement, she did not choose the kind of armor that covered the entire body, but rather a body armor that protected the torso, with guards for the arms and soft cloth for the lower part of the waist.

However, since they didn't have her size, even the smallest size was too big for her. When she put it on, she was practically swaying inside the clothes. So she took a soft snake whip and wrapped it around her waist to tighten it. The helmet was too big, and there was really nothing she could do about it. When she needed to wear it, she could only stuff it with soft cloth and cotton to secure it.

Before the drill began, she and Yuan Xingzhou stood in front of the 6,000-strong team. They felt that the team was well-organized and the scene was spectacular, which gave them a feeling of excitement.

The weather is lovely today. A flock of egrets flies over Jinluping. As the morning sun pierces through the thin mist of the distant lake, the first rays of sunlight fall upon the earth, like an endless blue ribbon being unfurled. The darkness and silence are awakened, and a fresh world of eternity and iridescence arrives.

The scenery of nature can always be new and amazing, no matter how many times you look at it.

Seeing that she would occasionally adjust her helmet to keep it steady, Yuan Xingzhou smiled gently and said, "We are neither one nor the other."

“I understand.” Zheng Quchi nodded seriously.

Yuan Xingzhou reached out and took her hand, adjusting the helmet to the center. He said, "There are no archers this time. If you don't rush forward recklessly, you won't get hurt."

"It's not like that..." She glanced left and right, then whispered to Yuan Xingzhou, "I just feel like I'm too short. If I don't wear the whole outfit, I don't look imposing. If I wear this, won't I look like a majestic general?"

“Well, whether you wear it or not, you’ll be a formidable adjutant,” Yuan Xingzhou said.

Zheng Quchi didn't believe such nonsense: "Do you think I'm like you? Tall and wearing this outfit, I look just like a powerful general."

Yuan Xingzhou wore a full suit of fine iron armor, the plates of which were woven together like fish scales. The suit weighed over thirty pounds on him, but the added weight did not make him look dejected. Instead, it made him look like a frost that had passed through, killing all plants and scattering all flowers. The combination of severity and killing made him look incredibly imposing.

The phoenix feather helmet firmly protected his head, partially covering his nose and mouth, obscuring his face, except for a pair of phoenix eyes.

"How does it compare to your general?" His long eyelashes fell, half-concealing his watery, languid eyes.

Zheng Quchi immediately turned his head and looked into the distance: "Hey, they're here."

Zheng Quchi looked up and saw the commanders of the other five countries leading their armies, striding forward with heads held high, each displaying their might like tigers, lions, wolves, and leopards.

“I feel…” Zheng Quchi hesitated before speaking.

Yuan Xingzhou asked encouragingly, "Tell me about it."

Zheng Quchi swallowed hard and chuckled dryly, "Their teams all look pretty good, huh?"

Previously, her understanding of the differences between Ye and the other countries was only vague and general. She thought that countries that coexisted in the same era would certainly have differences, but they couldn't be worlds apart, with differences spanning different eras.

Now she realizes how naive her thinking was.

Now that all countries are using their top-notch skills to intimidate, she can tell from her assessment of them that anyone who isn't blind can see that the enemy's soldiers are physically strong, equipped with unstoppable weapons, and their spirit of advancing bravely is heroic. This kind of spirit cannot be faked.

"Naturally, the Lion Army of Hongsheng Kingdom, the Iron Army of Beiyuan Kingdom, the Heavy Armor Army of Nanchen Kingdom, the Mechanized Army of Julu Kingdom, and the Ever-Victorious Army of Xize Kingdom are all renowned. Although we cannot see the full picture of the strongest armies of these six kingdoms today, we can still get a glimpse of them."

"You're so calm and collected. When the fight starts, I'll not only be able to watch, but I'll also get to experience the opponent's power firsthand," Zheng Quchi said irritably.

Yuan Xingzhou chuckled at her words and asked, "Then do you know what the strongest army in Ye Kingdom is called?"

Without a second thought, Zheng Quchi blurted out, "The Four Symbols Army!"

Yuan Xingzhou glanced at her, even his usually cold and indifferent eyes showed a hint of a smile: "Then do you know that before the Four Symbols Army became one of the strongest armies of the Seven Kingdoms, it was actually just a few remnants of scattered soldiers?"

Zheng Quchi was taken aback: "I...I don't know."

"Of course, you don't need to know that. You only need to know that a strong nation does not necessarily mean a strong military, a strong military does not necessarily mean a strong general, and a strong general does not necessarily mean victory in battle. If managed properly, the enemy will collapse on its own without a fight," Yuan Xingzhou said.
