Chapter 286 Building the Fortress (Part Two)

Liu Chaiji asked curiously, "What is it?"

"Don't ask about what's going on up there. Go help out with the mud."

Zheng Quchi had a map on hand, which depicted the entirety of the Golden Egret Hunting Ground. This was one of the few advantages that Ye State had in this military trial: familiarity with the terrain and, more importantly, with the various plants and animals that grew there.

However, we can't rely on it entirely, because today's maps are vastly different from modern maps. Their accuracy and realism have a certain "artistic" wildness and unrestrainedness. If you can understand it, you can understand it; if you can't, then forget it.

Zheng Quchi found a slope based on the "corner shape" on the map. She saw a rock wall covered with a kind of green vine, so she ordered everyone to take out their tools and start collecting it for future use.

They picked wild fruits they came across along the way, and gathered wild mushrooms and shrubs, thinking it was a waste not to take them. Their purpose in traveling like this was not to collect folk art, but to collect stones, dry branches, withered leaves, and dry grass.

The soldiers carried back baskets of stones they had collected, each the size of a hand, though they didn't understand why they had to collect stones.

Later that evening, Zheng Quchi and his group returned to the camp. Looking at the now-established alien camp, Zheng Quchi sighed slightly, "That's really strange," without saying anything else.

He ordered the soldiers to place the collected dry branches and leaves against the earthen wall and burn them. This hard burning would dry the wood quickly, and cracks were inevitable. However, if the burning time was controlled, the wall would not collapse. As for the dampness inside the earthen wall, he didn't need to worry about it for the time being. It wasn't like they were actually building houses or city walls. This kind of temporary earthen wall would just collapse after it was used.

Not far away, amidst the lush weeping willows and aquatic plants, a scout lies prone on the ground, lurking and observing the bustling scene at Egret Lake ahead.

"Why is the newly built camp in Ye Kingdom so strange?"

Nowadays, most campsites are either square or rectangular, so their "rainbow-shaped" campsite is quite rare.

"Look at this! They've built a mud wall around the perimeter. We can't find anything about the camp anymore, and we can't even tell how many of them are left," the scout said angrily.

Another person was astonished: "How did they manage to build a wall in such a short time? It's incredible! Could it be that they have some mysterious craftsman hidden in their team, or that they brought a team of craftsmen with them?"

"Impossible. Six thousand soldiers are already insufficient, and to add a team of craftsmen who cannot fight, what commander would be so foolish?"

"That's true. There's no need to waste too much energy on defense in such small-scale battles. Ye Kingdom really picked up a sesame seed and lost a watermelon. I don't know who was so stupid as to do so many useless things."

"Wait, look quickly, what's that?"

"What?" Startled by his companion's surprised voice, the man stared wide-eyed. "It's...it's a dog? No, its white fur...could it be a wolf?!"

"That's right, wolves. Why is Ye Kingdom tying two white wolves in front of their camp? What does that mean?" The scout was bewildered.

"Something's fishy. The Ye Kingdom wouldn't be so stupid as to do all this useless work."

"Indeed, the Ye Kingdom camp is too strange. Let's hurry back and report the situation!"

Not only were the scouts from this country completely baffled by Ye's actions, but the other countries were in the same situation. The scouts they sent out were scouting enemy positions in various countries. The scouts from the other countries could easily see through the progress of the encampment and the general scale and situation of the deployment. However, Ye's side managed to seal off their camp tightly, making it airtight and impossible to see through.

Most of the scouts couldn't wait until nightfall and retreated, eager to report the situation to their superiors.

When the generals learned that the Ye Kingdom was building what looked like a fortress, they were all dumbfounded.

They simply set up camp, cleared away any potential hazards in the surrounding area, cut down some wood to make wooden fences, then set up tents, inventoried all the supplies for the battle, planned how to prepare enough to last for several days, and finally cooked a meal, waiting for the bugle call to sound the next day to start the battle.

What can you do in a day?

Besides, even if they could do something, no one would want to expend that kind of effort and energy. In their view, setting up camp was just to leave a place to rest when they returned. Their greater desire was to attack, to take over other people's camps as quickly as possible, and to seize their supplies.

"Hahaha, let them build it up as much as they want. Once we conquer Ye, the camp we've built will be ours!" The commander of Hongsheng Kingdom was overjoyed upon hearing this.

The adjutant added smugly, "That's right. The Ye Kingdom wasted a whole day on those useless things. Tomorrow morning, we'll raid their hideout and make them flee in disarray, surrendering without a fight."

"Tell all the soldiers to rest well tonight, and get up early tomorrow before dawn to prepare. We'll catch them off guard."

——

Zheng Quchi had been busy all day and was now sitting by the campfire gnawing on a leg of lamb. The wild goat meat was fragrant, but it wasn't roasted very tenderly. Without various spices for seasoning, there was only a burnt smell of meat. But she didn't complain. Instead, she chewed while thinking about things.

Just then, a loud shout came from the watchtower: "Lieutenant Zheng, the commander has sent another cartload of game back. Please come and check it."

Zheng Quchi turned his head and thought to himself: Here we go again? What has he been doing all day? Was he just hunting?

"Have the commanders returned yet?" Zheng Quchi shouted loudly.

In the modern era without communication equipment, the only way to transmit a message over a long distance was by shouting. Sending someone to carry the message would be too time-consuming. Once the sentry on the watchtower received a message, he would spread it by shouting loudly.
