The next day, as the sun rose, ripples rose on the lake shore. Zheng Quchi, with dark circles under her eyes, patted the dust off her clothes, yawned, and then carried a bowl of red meat to feed her new pet white wolf.
She stood there sleepily, casually tossing a few pieces of meat over, then squatted down beside the basin, staring blankly into space.
Awoo~
"Aren't you full yet?"
Zheng Quchi heard a wolf howl, yawned again, and threw over a few more pieces, but this time they didn't eat them. Instead, they paced restlessly from side to side, bared their sharp teeth, and let out a sinister howl.
Awoo~
Awoo~
"That's quite a rhythmic call. If it's not full, then it must be thirsty?"
Zheng Quchi rubbed her eyes, perked up, and turned her head to examine the two of them for a while. Suddenly, she realized that something was wrong. She discovered that they weren't howling at her at all, but rather at something behind her...
Her expression suddenly changed, and just as she was about to turn around, she saw thousands of beautiful rays of the rising sun spreading red across the surface of Egret Lake, passing through the dappled treetops, shining into her pupils, and also pouring down onto the ground.
At the same time, a series of loud and long horn sounds, like low-frequency vibrations covered by paper, lingered above the Golden Egret Hunting Ground.
The sound of the long bugle call signaled the official start of the military trials among the six kingdoms.
The soldiers on the watchtower were instantly alert. They craned their necks, their eyes practically bulging out, and shouted anxiously, "Quick, quick, defend! Enemy attack! Enemy attack!"
Seven watchtowers were erected around the camp, staffed by seven loud-voiced sentries who simultaneously detected an enemy force rushing in like a tidal wave from the redwood forest as a battle horde sounded.
The striking blue banner of "The Surging Waves" was like a force of steel, advancing swiftly and unstoppably to within a few hundred meters of the Ye Kingdom's camp.
"It's Hongsheng Kingdom—"
"A thousand soldiers from Hongsheng Kingdom are advancing towards our camp. Lieutenant Zheng, give the order immediately."
Amidst this frantic and anxious urging, Zheng Quchi turned around. The red light, carrying a scorching power, shone on her face. She narrowed her eyes slightly and saw a long line of people charging towards her in the rising sun, their bodies brimming with bloodlust.
She paused for a moment, her expression as if blurred by the morning light, making it difficult to see clearly.
All that was heard was a clear and melodious voice calmly saying, "All guards, retreat to the camp!"
At a command, the sentries are the first to hear it. As the camp's "megaphone," their responsibility is to relay the message from a high vantage point to surrounding units, ensuring that everyone in the camp can hear it.
"All guards, retreat to camp!"
"All guards, retreat to camp!"
Each of the seven people was responsible for relaying orders in their respective positions.
The soldiers who were originally stationed at the camp walls immediately changed from holding weapons and preparing to charge and fight to picking up their weapons, turning around, and running into the walls.
When Hong Shengguo and his group saw Ye Guo fleeing without daring to show their faces, they couldn't help but feel smug and arrogant.
The commander pointed at Zheng Quchi, who was carrying two white wolves, and ran away: "Hahahaha, look at this! Ye Kingdom doesn't even have the courage to fight. They are terrified when they see us attacking. The adjutant is worrying for nothing. He even asked us to send a vanguard to investigate. There's no need for that at all. Everyone, charge in with me!"
The reason why Shen Tangzhong dared to be so arrogant and domineering was simply because he knew that Yuan Xingzhou had led a team away from the camp yesterday and had not returned since. This was not a secret, and scouts from various countries would pay attention to such important information.
Seeing that Yuan Xingzhou and his group had not appeared near their territory, Hong Shengguo guessed that he must have gone elsewhere to ambush other enemy troops.
Now all that's left is Zheng Quchi, who knows nothing, guarding this empty camp. It's the perfect opportunity for them to come and wipe them out in one fell swoop, directly burning their retreat route.
A sense of triumph, excitement, and bloodlust filled Chen Tang. He had boasted at the banquet that night that he would "crush" Zheng Quchi, and this time he was determined to keep his promise.
"I heard they dug trenches, so watch your step, lest there be a trap!"
Shen Tangzhong was, after all, a veteran. He was both rough and meticulous. He was not simply blinded by the impending victory and the joy of seeing his men kill, nor was he simply letting his guard down.
"yes!"
As they approached, they saw a narrow, shallow ditch with two earthen steps dug on either side. The soldiers of Hongsheng Kingdom tried to step on it, then fell silent.
If the State of Ye had dug just a few inches further, they probably wouldn't have been able to take this step.
"Pah, what a piece of junk!"
"Pooh."
Hong Shengguo's group, cursing and swearing, crossed the "ditch"—no, it should be said, the dried-up ditch—when Chen Tangzhong frowned and said, "Something's strange. Don't fall for their trick."
"That can't be right."
With some skepticism, the soldiers of Hongsheng Kingdom cautiously made their way to the other side of the wall. During their journey, they found no malicious traps set by Ye Kingdom outside; the land was flat and the road was clear.
“Commander, yesterday they were building walls, digging trenches, and constructing several watchtowers. They probably didn’t have time to do anything else. They probably thought the others would plan their attack. Didn’t you see that the commander of Ye Kingdom hasn’t returned? They had no idea that we would arrive outside their camp as soon as the horn sounded, and that speed is of the essence.”
Upon reflection, Chen Tangzhong realized that this made sense. In just one short day, they had chosen a place to set up camp, yet they had prepared all these fancy and impractical things. How could they have had time to arrange anything else?
