The Southern Chen adjutant said suspiciously, "Judging from her neat and clean clothes and the way she moves freely, it doesn't seem like she was brutally harmed by Shen Tangzhong..."
Mu Jin felt his head explode, and he shook his head repeatedly in disbelief: "Impossible. Shen Tangzhong has always hated Yuwen Sheng. If Zheng Quchi had stayed obediently in the inner quarters, he might not have done anything to her for the time being. But now that she dares to inherit her husband's business, she's an eyesore to Shen Tangzhong. With his arrogant and vengeful nature, he will definitely not let her off easily, unless—"
Unless the last two words are too shocking to his understanding and estimation, causing him to hesitate and be unable to utter them smoothly.
Unless... Shen Tangzhong is defeated, defeated by a country girl who has never even been on a battlefield.
He narrowed his cold eyes: "There must be something strange about this Ye Kingdom camp!"
The Southern Chen adjutant, clinging to a sliver of hope, said, "General, only Zheng Quchi came out. Perhaps the rest of the Ye army has truly been wiped out..."
Mu Jin glared at him fiercely: "Don't even think about it. I've fought so many battles over the years and seen so many strange things. Nothing is impossible. There's more than one smart person in this world, and others aren't stupid either. Now that I think about it, Zheng Quchi must have some connections to have been able to win over the top craftsmen of the famous Jichun Craftsmen's Guild in the Seven Kingdoms. I'm not afraid of her coming at me with real swords and spears, but I'm worried that she might resort to some low-class tricks."
"Then what should we do? Should we send someone in to investigate first?" Nan Chen's adjutant asked worriedly.
After pondering for a moment, Mu Jin ordered, "Send a few nimble men to infiltrate Bailu Lake and circle around to the rear of the Ye army to investigate the situation."
The adjutant from Nan Chen quickly agreed: "Yes, I will do it right away."
Mu Jin twisted his neck, raised his chin, and stared coldly at the Ye army camp. He noticed that the enemy had only been there for a day, yet they hadn't cleared away the messy cover around them, eliminated any potential spies, organized any patrols, or even set up gates, ladders, or platforms. There were no visible or hidden sentries. Instead, they had built a wall that offered little real defense, with crooked watchtowers. Their only purpose, he suspected, was simply to deceive people.
Mu Jin chuckled, his eyes filled with disdain: "Only those without real ability would choose to resort to such underhanded methods behind the scenes. However, in the face of absolute strength, a paper tiger will only be torn apart."
Before long, the adjutant from the Southern Chen army trotted back: "General, we have already dispatched five scouts to secretly infiltrate the Ye camp from the western lakeside to investigate the situation."
"Yes, also keep an eye on those two white wolves at the entrance of Ye Camp. Report back immediately if anything happens."
ah?
The adjutant from Nan Chen was completely bewildered, not understanding what Commander Mu meant by that.
Unable to sleep well all night, Mu Jin decided to take this opportunity to take a nap on the grass.
But soon after they fell into darkness, they suddenly suspected someone was there. They opened their eyes and saw that it was the adjutant from the Southern Chen Dynasty.
He let out a soft sigh, his brow furrowing: "What time is it?"
"It's been half an hour."
Mu Jin rubbed his swollen temples, got up from the grass, and brushed the grass clippings off his clothes: "How are you?"
The adjutant from the Southern Chen dynasty shook his head and said gravely, "They have never returned."
"Has an urgent message been sent?"
"No."
Mu Jin remained silent for a moment, his eyes filled with deep thought.
The adjutant from the Southern Chen Dynasty continued, "After Zheng Quchi finished feeding the two white wolves, he went inside, leaving only the two white wolves to guard the gate. I observed that the watchtowers and patrol guards were nowhere to be seen, as if the Ye army camp was just an empty shell."
Mu Jin stepped forward and said, "Wait another half hour. If they haven't returned, or if there's still no movement from the Ye army camp, then we'll attack."
"Attack?" The adjutant from Nan Chen looked surprised. "But... but we haven't figured out the enemy yet..."
"It's all just playing tricks and creating a mystery. At most, Zheng Quchi can only come up with some schemes and traps. She can't come up with any real tactics. As long as we expose their tricks and completely destroy their disguises, she will be helpless."
Upon hearing this, the adjutant from the Southern Chen Dynasty agreed wholeheartedly: "Then we shall obey the general's orders."
Half an hour later, the scouts sent out by Mu Jin and his men still hadn't returned. It was as if they had fallen into a dark abyss and been swallowed up without a sound, without even a ripple.
"It seems that Shen Tangzhong has really been caught off guard. If he really captured our people, he will definitely come out of the camp to confront and show off to this general. Only Zheng Quchi is waiting to lure us into a trap."
Mu Jin and Shen Tangzhong have known each other for several years, their relationship is like that of enemies and friends, and they understand each other best. Now Mu Jin is certain that Shen Tangzhong was tricked when he went there, and it is still unclear whether he is alive or dead.
"So what should we do now?"
"Isn't she afraid to confront us head-on? Then we'll make sure they have no choice but to fight." Mu Jin's lips curled into a ruthless smile, as if he had a plan in mind.
Having followed Mu Jin for so long, Nan Chen's adjutant immediately understood Mu Jin's meaning.
"Does the general intend to gather troops to attack and destroy their outer perimeter first, forcing them to be exposed and, without that layer of cover, have no choice but to come out and fight?"
"More than that. This time, of our six thousand troops, two thousand will be left to guard the camp and supply the supplies. The remaining four thousand troops consist of six hundred axemen, two hundred siege engineers, one thousand heavy infantry, one thousand two hundred short-bladed soldiers, and one thousand halberdiers. Apart from the two thousand five hundred troops that I brought with me, the rest are temporarily assigned to other positions. However, I had already sent a message to the siege engineers and heavy infantry, and they have already pushed two catapults to come."
"Attacking from both near and far, brilliant! Let's see how the Ye army responds," the Southern Chen adjutant exclaimed happily.
——
Ye Army Camp
Zheng Quchi and his soldiers, hiding behind the wall, scouted out through a small hole. This hole was specially made by inserting reeds in advance and pulling them out when the wall was slightly dry, leaving behind inconspicuous little holes.
