Chapter 50 Meeting the Enemy

This was Zheng Quchi's first time learning to hunt.

With only a surge of courage and confidence, and some jungle adventure knowledge she had seen on educational channels, she felt that she could handle the hunting.

For example, she can locate animal nests by looking at the footprints left on the ground.

But after searching and examining the ground for a long time, she couldn't tell what kind of things had left those pitted and uneven footprints in the pile of mud and rotten leaves.

Forget it, that requires experience. Let's move on to the next one.

Set a trap.

You can set lasso traps or net traps, and after a flurry of activity, you might find that... you've already fallen asleep, but no small animals have come to fall for the trap.

Obviously, this method is not suitable for people who are impatient and eager to wear a fur coat.

Zheng Quchi wandered around the woods but found nothing.

She was oversimplifying things; hunting is indeed a skill.

Just as she was preparing to implement the third plan, a chill suddenly ran through her—an intuition pointing to danger struck her; she sensed that something was watching her every move from the shadows.

She turned around, quickly nocked an arrow, and aimed behind her, only to see a roe deer staring blankly at her...

My legs feel a little weak.

Whew, that scared her to death. She thought she had encountered some kind of terrifying, large wild beast.

Startled, the roe deer tried to run away, but Zheng Quchi, of course, wouldn't let go of the prey that he had just run into, so he quickly gave chase.

Then she heard a rustling sound again. She reflexively turned her head and saw a patch of white fur peeking out from behind a rock in the shadows of the trees... Was it a rabbit?

But it doesn't look that big; even wild white rabbits shouldn't grow this big.

Could it be a polar bear or some other white-haired animal?

Seeing that the roe deer ran very fast and disappeared into the forest in an instant, she decided that since she couldn't catch the roe deer, she would use this unknown animal as a substitute.

She aimed at it and pulled the trigger.

She was certain the arrow had hit its mark, but to her surprise, the white-furred creature emitted not an animal's cry, but a muffled groan of sudden pain from a human.

"...It's a person?!"

She was startled and quickly ran forward.

It turned out that a tall man covered in white fox fur was hiding behind the rock. Because he was too far away and had been leaning there motionless, she mistook him for a wild animal and shot him.

We're doomed!

"Um, are you still alive?"

She hesitated to go forward.

"Are you genuinely stupid or just pretending? If I were truly dead, would I still be able to answer you?"

A furious, clenched voice escaped from the victim's mouth.

Still alive? He sounds quite energetic, so he should be alright.

Zheng Quchi stepped forward with delight, wanting to see how badly the victim was injured. Just then, the other party turned around with an unfriendly expression.

When Zheng Quchi saw that familiar, handsome, and violent face, he was completely stunned.

Can anyone tell her why Mo Ye from Julu Kingdom is here?!

Mo Ye stared at the crossbow bolt aimed at his forehead, his pupils constricting. He clutched his reopened wound, blood seeping from his gums: "That arrow didn't kill me just now. Are you planning to finish me off with another one to silence me?"

Zheng Quchi's lips twitched, and her gaze shifted to her hands. Unconsciously, she had put her thoughts into action.

She came to her senses and quickly calmed her frightened heart.

Don't panic, Zheng Quchi. You were wearing a mask before, so he definitely didn't recognize you.

"Who are you? Why are you here?" she deliberately questioned him.

Or, let's just kill him and get it over with!

He's no pushover. Although she didn't shoot him intentionally, given his petty and vindictive nature, he'll definitely retaliate later.

Anyway, no one will know... But why does the thought of killing him suddenly make my heart feel uncomfortable and unable to release?

"What are you going to do?" Mo Ye stared at her with his gloomy, slanted eyes.

She was so imposing. Even if he were hit by one of her arrows, she wasn't confident she could kill someone who had hidden weapons all over his body.

"Who are you? Why are you hiding in the woods?" she asked again, feigning ignorance.

Mo Ye pursed his dry, pale lips, ignoring her question, and simply asked, "Is there anything to eat?"

“No,” she answered quickly.

He scoffed and tossed her a package.

Zheng Quchi thought it was money, but when he opened it, he was shocked.

"What's this?"

"The North Sea pearl, if you sell it, it will be worth enough to buy you some food. Is that enough? Also, do me one more thing: find a secluded place and burn all these things."

He threw a blood-stained set of clothes at her and told her to deal with it.

Zheng Quchi's mind worked quickly, and he soon figured out his purpose in doing so.

That insidious and vicious fellow.

He is definitely being hunted down by Yuwen Sheng. His troops have been wiped out, and the borders of Ye Kingdom are now tightly sealed off. He cannot escape back to Julu Kingdom for the time being, and he is clearly planning to use her to divert attention.

How could an ordinary person possibly possess a North Sea pearl? He even asked her to help burn blood-stained clothes. If she were caught, wouldn't she become his accomplice?

Dream on.

But now, in order to get out of there smoothly, she pretended to agree: "Okay."

She scraped together some of the dry rations from her bag and gave them to him. She thought to herself that she would throw his blood-stained clothes on the road later, hoping that Yuwen Sheng's men would find them. That would be a welcome sight.

Unexpectedly, at that moment, a tiger's roar came from the forest, and a large insect sprang out from behind a rock. It paced back and forth, its eyes gleaming with a fierce hunger for its prey.
