The farce ended with Lu Zhou's surrender, while Sun Man, like a victorious rooster, looked down at Lu Zhou.
Lu Zhou was incredibly frustrated. He, a top-notch lawyer, had been outmaneuvered by a country girl. He believed that revenge was a dish best served cold, and he would get his revenge sooner or later.
A few days later, Su Ning was almost able to get out of bed. Her parents were with her in the ward, and everyone else went to work or came to visit her in their spare time.
Zhu Zhou bought a ticket for the afternoon's ferry. He had spent too much time here. The equipment had already started operating, and seeing that Su Ning was not in danger, he wanted to go back and check on her.
When Zhu Zhou arrived, he was carrying a bouquet of flowers. Li Mei and Su Qiang were both very happy to see him.
In the village, the couple liked him very much and even thought about marrying their daughter to him, but unfortunately, their daughter grew up and had her own little thoughts.
"Uncle and Aunt, I've come to see Ning'er."
Zhu Zhou handed the flowers to Su Ning. The bright red roses were exquisite and beautiful. Su Ning took them and lowered her head to smell them.
"Thank you, Zhu Zhou. The flowers are beautiful, and I like them very much."
Li Mei placed the flowers on the bedside table. She knew that Zhu Zhou might have something to say to his daughter, and the couple weren't oblivious to each other's feelings.
"Ning'er, you and Xiao Zhu chat first, your dad and I will go downstairs to buy some daily necessities."
Li Mei pulled Su Qiang out of the ward. Now only the two of them were left. Zhu Zhou had a lot to say, but he didn't know where to begin.
"Ning'er, I bought a ticket for the afternoon's boat. I'm relieved to see you safe and sound."
Su Ning knew Zhu Zhou's feelings for her, and she knew that if she spoke her mind, they might not even be able to remain friends. Su Ning had already politely declined last time.
These days, Zhu Zhou has come to terms with things. Liking someone doesn't necessarily mean you have to possess her. As long as Su Ning is doing well, he's willing to let her be.
"He Ci is a trustworthy person. You have excellent judgment. I wish you a long and happy life together."
Only Zhu Zhou himself knew how painful it was for him to say those words. He Ci's love for Su Ning was no less than his own, and he accepted his defeat wholeheartedly.
"Zhu Zhou, thank you for your understanding. Actually, my sister is a very nice person. She has always liked you."
Zhu Zhou chuckled and ruffled Su Ning's hair. "Silly girl, I'm not blind. Su Tian is nice, but my heart can't hold anyone else anymore."
"Don't even think about pushing me to outsiders. I only said I wanted to help you and He Ci get together, but I didn't say I was going to let go."
"If He Ci treats you badly, remember to look back at me. Maybe I'll still be waiting for you in the same place."
Su Ning lowered her head, her eyes filled with guilt. Zhu Zhou had always taken good care of her since they were little, and she had also fallen for the boy in front of her. But after learning that Su Tian also liked Zhu Zhou, she backed down.
Perhaps it was all preordained; if it weren't for missing out on Zhuzhou, I wouldn't have met He Ci now.
"Zhu Zhou, I'm not good at saying nice things, but let's still be good friends."
Zhu Zhou smiled bitterly, "Okay, let's be best friends for life, and you can't break your promise."
Su Ning looked at Zhu Zhou's outstretched pinky finger and hooked it with her hand with a smile.
"Pinky promise, a hundred years from now, never to be broken."
The two laughed and let go of each other's hands. Zhu Zhou spoke cautiously.
"Ning'er, may I hug you? Just as a farewell hug."
Su Ning generously extended her hand, and Zhu Zhou leaned closer and hugged Su Ning tightly. This hug was devoid of any emotion; it was both letting go and releasing her feelings!
Outside the ward, Su Tian heard that Zhu Zhou was leaving. She went to the hotel first but couldn't find him, so she came to the hospital to try her luck. She didn't intend to eavesdrop on their conversation.
She was better than Su Ning from a young age, and Zhu Zhou always looked down on her. She thought that as long as she outshone Su Ning, Zhu Zhou would see her merits.
She was wrong. What He Ci liked about Su Ning was her gentleness, tranquility, and understanding, qualities that she herself could not match.
