In the kitchen, Su Ning helped He Ci mix the pig feed, then handed him the bucket, looking helpless.
Li Mei urged him emphatically from the yard, "Hey you, hurry up, what kind of behavior is this, dawdling like this?"
He Ci looked at Su Ning pitifully. It wasn't that he didn't want to go; he was genuinely afraid. Su Ning never expected that the young master, who wasn't afraid of killing people, would be afraid of pigs.
This is understandable for He Ci. It was the first time he had ever seen a real pig in his life. He had only ever seen such creatures on TV before. Su Ning had just said that almost every family in the countryside raises pigs.
Seeing He Ci come out, Li Mei held a bamboo pole in her hand and directed He Ci to pour pig feed into the stone trough, while Li Mei chased away the piglets that came over to grab the food.
He Ci was, after all, a pampered young master, and Li Mei was worried that he would get hurt by the pig. Seeing He Ci's clumsy appearance, Su Ning, who was standing at the kitchen door, couldn't help but laugh.
There's basically no farm work in winter, and with the Lunar New Year approaching, most villagers stay home.
That's why people often visit each other after dinner. Our neighbor, Qin Fengxia, walked in from the doorway carrying a bowl.
"Ning'er, have you eaten? Where's your mother?"
"Auntie, we just ate. My mom is feeding the pigs."
Qin Fengxia looked towards the pigpen and saw Li Mei directing a young man to pour pig feed. He Ci had his back to Qin Fengxia, so she couldn't see his face, only his back.
Qin Fengxia took a few steps and stopped not far from Li Mei. "Meizi, after dinner everyone said they're going to the market, do you want to go?"
Li Mei watched as He Ci finished pouring out the pig feed, then tossed the bamboo pole she was holding aside.
"It's Fengxia! I'll pack my things, let's go together."
Qin Fengxia smiled and agreed, then glanced at the tall man standing not far away by the pigpen.
"Meizi, who is that young man? Is he a relative of yours?"
This was He Ci's first time feeding pigs and the first time he had ever seen pigs eat. He looked at the two pigs with curiosity. No wonder people like to say, "Are you a pig? You can eat so much." Pigs really can eat a lot.
He Ci turned around, and Qin Fengxia saw his appearance. She couldn't help but admire him.
"My goodness, this young man is really handsome, even better looking than the stars on TV."
Qin Fengxia stopped eating and just stared straight at He Ci. Then she turned her eyes to Li Mei.
“Meizi, how old is this young man? Does he have a girlfriend? I’ve never seen any of your relatives who are this good-looking.”
Li Mei sensed something else in Qin Fengxia's words: He Ci was someone her daughter liked, and she couldn't let anyone else have designs on him.
Li Mei said nonchalantly, "Oh, you mean him! My son-in-law who moved in with us, he just arrived last night, I haven't introduced him to everyone yet!"
Su Ning stumbled and almost fell. He Ci quickly went over to help her. This... this... I don't know what her mother was thinking. Would her family dare to accept someone like He Ci as a live-in son-in-law?
He Ci didn't care at all. Qin Fengxia's eyes widened. She glanced at He Ci a few more times before speaking.
"Meizi! That young man has had a tough time too. Since he's marrying into the family, you should at least treat him well."
"Look at how cold it is, he's dressed so thinly. The young man is so handsome, he must come from a poor family, otherwise why would he be a live-in son-in-law?"
He Ci didn't know what "matrilocal marriage" meant. From what they meant, it was like marrying into the family. In the countryside, it was called "matrilocal marriage," but in their port city, it was called "son-in-law."
Su Ning squeezed He Ci's hand, "Don't listen to my mother's nonsense. Who would dare to let you marry into her family?"
He Ci replied with a smile, "Auntie is right. It's not bad to marry into your family. If your parents are willing, I'll marry you and become your son-in-law."
Su Ning chuckled, "Are you sure you want to marry into my family? Aren't you afraid of being drowned in gossip?"
He Ci didn't care at all! He was happy that Su Ning's parents were willing to accept him, even if it meant marrying into their family.
