Chapter 9 Smuggling

When He Ci returned, he found the breakfast on the table untouched, and he went to the room but didn't see anyone.

He Ci walked around the room, then came to the bathroom door and knocked a few times.

"Hey! Are you inside?"

Su Ning walked to the door and opened it a crack. He Ci saw that she was still there and handed her the things he was holding.

Su Ning took the bag and said, "Thank you!" Then she closed the door.

Su Ning looked at the sanitary napkins and a brand-new piece of clothing in the bag, and a smile appeared on her face.

After all that commotion, the breakfast on the table was cold. He Ci could eat it however he wanted, but the girl inside couldn't eat anything cold during this crucial period.

Su Ning came out after changing her clothes, and He Ci walked over to her and circled around.

"Looks like I have good taste; you're dressed very nicely."

Su Ning lowered her head and remained silent. This was the first time He Ci had ever seen such an easily embarrassed girl. He reached out and grabbed Su Ning's hand, wanting to lead her out, but Su Ning was so frightened that she tried to shake him off.

He Ci's voice came from above, "It's not like we haven't held hands before. Breakfast is already cold, let's go out to eat."

Su Ning wanted to say that she was fine, but He Ci stared at her abdomen.

"Aren't you afraid that if you eat something cold, there will be a river of blood later?"

Su Ning looked up at the man who was talking nonsense. His smile didn't reach his eyes, and Su Ning didn't dare to meet his gaze. She could only obediently let He Ci lead her downstairs.

In Su Ning's hometown, holding hands with someone of the opposite sex would be gossiped about. Here in X Port, the social atmosphere is more open, and scantily clad men and women can be seen everywhere on the streets. Hugging and cuddling is perfectly normal here.

He Ci led Su Ning to a restaurant. It was almost 9 o'clock and there weren't many people. After they went in, a tattooed man came up to greet them.

"Brother Ci! What would you like to eat? I'll have someone prepare it."

He Ci turned to Su Ning and asked, "Is there anything you'd like to eat? My treat."

Su Ning noticed that the tattooed man next to her was looking at the two of them with an ambiguous gaze, and she spoke softly.

"Whatever you eat, I'll eat!"

He Ci looked at Su Ning's hand wrapped in gauze, ordered two bowls of chicken soup wontons from the tattooed man, and then led Su Ning to a place to sit down.

He Ci rested his chin on his arm and looked at Su Ning, "Hey! Aren't you a local?"

Su Ning remained silent, while He Ci continued speaking.

Are you afraid of me?

Su Ning thought of the scene last night. It would be a lie to say she wasn't afraid. This man didn't seem to have any ill intentions towards her. Once bitten, twice shy. If even a childhood playmate could sell her out, what chance would a complete stranger have?

He Ci hadn't expected the girl to be so wary. "Don't worry, even though I'm not a good person, I won't do anything to you."

Su Ning's hand, hidden under the table, clenched and then loosened. "Can you take me back to the hospital?"

The man named Arjun said he could take me home tonight. He asked if I would leave if he couldn't find me at the hospital.

Su Ning hesitated before speaking. Since this man was someone who lived on the edge, he must have some connections.

"I...I came here illegally."

Upon hearing the word "smuggling," He Ci began to look the girl in the eye, his tone becoming distant, unlike his previous nonchalant manner.

"You came here for money?"

Su Ning noticed his change and didn't hide it at all.

“I need money. Someone told me that I could earn tens of thousands of yuan a year working here.”

He Ci suddenly lost his appetite. "Since you want to make money, how about I introduce you to a job? It's worth over 100,000 a year. Do you want to do it?"

Su Ning's eyes flickered. Her father's surgery had cost a lot of money, and they had borrowed from all the relatives and neighbors they could. Now she was the only one in the family who could go out and earn money.

She thought He Ci really wanted to help her, but then she heard He Ci's cold tone.

"There's a top-tier club here. Selling there for a year could easily bring in hundreds of thousands. How about I help you make connections?"

Upon hearing his words, Su Ning's face instantly drained of color. She didn't know where she got the courage, but she grabbed the water glass on the table and splashed it on He Ci's face.

"You've gone too far."

After Su Ning finished speaking, she ran away crying without looking back. He Ci also regretted it. This was the first time he had said such things to a girl. This girl didn't seem like that kind of person at all. He must have been out of his mind to say such a bastard thing.
