26 Leakage Incidents
Looking at the unfamiliar man in front of her, Wen Xueyan gripped her phone tightly: "Who are you? Why should I go with you? This is a public place. If you do anything wrong, I'll call the police."
"Don't misunderstand," the man said calmly, "it's for your career development." At that moment, she saw the car window slowly roll down.
Mr. Xi. We just met at the company today.
Since she was a company client, she approached the vehicle, and the driver opened the door for her.
Xi Mingyuan closed the document in his hand, his eyes sharp: "You're being treated like a lowly assistant in the company, it's beneath you."
Wen Xueyan remained silent. She felt that when she didn't know the other person's intentions, the best response was to listen.
"My relationship with your company is collaborative on some projects, and competitive on others. Your technical solutions are excellent, especially the optimized design of the pipelines in the explosion-proof zone," President Xi said slowly. "As far as I know, you have other project proposals in hand. Sell them to me privately? I'll pay a high price. As far as I know, you're also going through a divorce and are currently living in a rented apartment."
"How did President Xi know about my situation?"
President Xi smiled slightly: "There are no secrets that cannot be obtained in this world, only prices that are not high enough."
Wen Xueyan recalled the eye contact she saw between her colleague Sun Hanhan and President Xi during today's meeting.
“Thank you for your appreciation, but I will not sell the company’s trade secrets,” Wen Xueyan said clearly.
A brief silence fell over the car. Mr. Xi's gaze deepened as he re-examined the woman before him.
"Interesting. You're quite professional," he said slowly. "So, how about switching jobs and joining my company? Technical Director, you name your salary, how about it?"
This turn of events was unexpected for Wen Xueyan. She had thought that if she refused to disclose the secret, she would be threatened or bribed, but instead she received a job offer.
Wen Xueyan pondered for a moment.
"I need to think about it," she finally said. She remembered the previous incident of the company's technical solution leak that had not yet been investigated, and she felt that it might be related to President Xi. Therefore, she did not completely reject him and would see if there were any follow-up messages.
Mr. Xi handed over a business card: "Looking forward to your choice."
After getting off the bus, Wen Xueyan walked towards the subway station, thinking that she needed to call Cheng Boyan to discuss this matter that evening.
Just then, her phone rang. It was Song Tiancheng, but Wen Xueyan continued to ignore it.
After boarding the subway, the phone rang; it was her mother, Wen Xiali.
"Xueyan, Mom made three-ingredient dumplings today. I'll be downstairs at your place in about half an hour. Tell Tiancheng not to buy me so many supplements anymore, it's too expensive."
Wen Xueyan rubbed her temples: "Mom, I've moved."
Wen Xueyan felt that she would have to confront her mother about the divorce tonight. Remembering her mother's conservative views and heart condition, she bought some nitroglycerin pills at a pharmacy as a precaution.
More than half an hour later, the mother, Wen Xiali, came in.
She put down her lunchbox and looked around.
Compared to the two-bedroom apartment that Song Tiancheng bought, the space here is noticeably more simply furnished.
"Xueyan, did you and Tiancheng have a fight?" Wen Xiali frowned. "How can this place compare to your previous home? Tiancheng even called these past few days to check on my health and remind me to take my medicine on time. He's such a considerate child. Why did you have to make a scene and move?"
Wen Xueyan felt a chill run through her. So Song Tiancheng had this trick up his sleeve. He'd even extended his attack to her mother.
"Mom, he cheated on me. And he even hit me."
Wen Xiali didn't seem surprised: "Cheating? Men sometimes make mistakes when they're out, as long as his heart is still at home and he knows to come back. Look at this..."
"This is only temporary. I'm already planning to find a new place and move in a while."
When Wen Xueyan showed her a copy of the medical report regarding the beating, Wen Xiali looked distressed, but was quickly swayed by her old-fashioned ideas.
“Hitting people is a common occurrence in society. As long as he promises not to do it again, that's fine.” Mrs. Wen's tone was anxious. “Xueyan, you're not a child anymore. If you get divorced, who will want you? Having a complete family is more important than anything else! Do you want to end up like me…”
Her words came to an abrupt end.
Wen Xueyan knew the source of her mother's almost obsessive insistence on marriage.
Wen Xiali always wanted to get married, but Wen Xueyan's father never gave her a home.
"Actually, your father is a small business owner."
"Huh? Then why does he never pay child support?" Wen Xueyan was very surprised. She had always thought her father was a homeless person or something.
"I didn't dare tell you before because I received death threats."
Wen Xiali slowly began to recount things from the past.
In her youth, Wen Xiali was radiant and beautiful. She fell in love with a handsome, wealthy man who was visiting the area on a business trip. He was gentle, considerate, and generous to her. However, after she told him she was pregnant, he disappeared without a trace. She only found him after giving birth and discovered that he was a "live-in son-in-law" who depended on her family and had no real power.
The mother tried to get some child support, but what she got in return was the other party's wife's family's ruthless death threats. They even had someone follow Wen Xueyan to the daycare center where she was.
“The other party was extremely ruthless. I didn’t dare to call the police. I’ve seen news reports about child abduction, and many children are never found. In the end, I had no choice but to give up the idea of asking for child support and raise you on my own.”
"What's his name?"
Wen Xiali shook her head again, remaining silent.
This past experience shaped Wen Xiali's mindset as a mother: she desperately wanted to make up for the shortcomings in her own life through her daughter's "normal" marriage.
In her view, no matter how riddled with problems a marriage may be, it is better than facing the hardships of the world alone.
As night deepened, Wen Xueyan looked at her mother's pale face and thought of her not-so-healthy heart.
Wen Xueyan softened her tone: "Mom, it's too late today, why don't you stay here? You can sleep in the bedroom, the bed is all made up. I'll sleep on the sofa here."
Wen Xiali looked at the sofa, then at her daughter's lowered eyelashes, and felt a mix of emotions.
Wen Xiali turned and walked into the bedroom.
Wen Xueyan curled up on the sofa and pulled the blanket over herself. Her gaze fell on a distant point of starlight outside the window.
Just then, Song Tiancheng sent another message saying he would be back tomorrow night. Before he could finish reading it, his phone screen went black and the battery died.
Wen Xueyan had planned to call Cheng Boyan tonight, but realized she had forgotten her charger at the company, so she went to bed early.
*
The next day, on a frosty morning in late autumn, Wen Xueyan woke up feeling a little dizzy. She had just sat down at the company when President Xu's assistant invited her into the conference room.
The atmosphere in the conference room was heavy, and General Manager Xu sat there with a livid expression. Several photocopies of blueprints were scattered on the table.
President Cheng was also present, his face revealing no emotion. He had originally come for the monthly meeting, but now he sat at the other end of the conference table, his long, slender fingers resting on the table.
Cheng Boyan returned from his business trip last night and tried to call Wen Xueyan, but her phone was switched off. A little worried, he arrived at the meeting earlier than scheduled. He was relieved to see Wen Xueyan enter the meeting room.
“Mr. Wen, you’ve come at the right time,” said General Manager Xu. “The three core blueprints for the new project we’re bidding on next month were acquired by Mr. Xi’s Shiming Group last night.”
Wen Xueyan saw that she had reviewed these drawings a few days ago.
Just then, there was a knock on the door. Sun Hanhan stood outside: "President Xu, I know about the leaked blueprints and request to join the meeting."
Xu Junhang nodded. Sun Hanhan walked in: "Hello everyone, I believe this leak of technical documents is related to Wen Xueyan."
"Do you have any evidence? Otherwise, please shut up," Wen Xueyan asked directly.
“Yesterday afternoon around six o’clock, I saw Wen Xueyan get into President Xi’s car. She probably sent him the blueprints in the car.” She held up her phone, and the screen clearly showed Wen Xueyan bending down to get into a black Maybach.
The conference room erupted in an uproar.
Wen Xueyan felt her cheeks slightly flushed, and a slight tingling sensation rose in the tip of her nose. Then she sneezed. A slight dizziness followed, as if someone had gently tapped her temple.
She frowned to herself, thinking that she might have caught a cold from sleeping on the sofa last night.
Sun Hanhan raised her voice: "Engineer Wen, how much did President Xi pay for these blueprints? I heard you're going through a divorce? Is it because you're having trouble making ends meet by renting an apartment, so you're willing to sell company secrets for money? You're quite ambitious, carrying a fake Chanel bag. Are you trying to buy a real one sooner?"
Xu Junhang said to Sun Hanhan, "Let's stick to the facts. Your last sentence is irrelevant to this matter. You can leave after you've finished speaking."
Sun Hanhan pressed her advantage: "I haven't finished yet. Wen Xueyan, why don't you hand over your bag and phone to the company right now and have them checked on the spot? Let's see if there's anything President Xi gave you privately, or any shady call records?"
Wen Xueyan touched her head; she felt a little dizzy and thought she must have a fever.
Cheng Boyan noticed Wen Xueyan's discomfort, but he couldn't touch her forehead right now. Publicly defending her? That would only put her in even more trouble.
Cheng Boyan remained serious, but his gaze shifted to Lin Zhe, the head of the group's legal department, on the other side. Attorney Lin immediately nodded slightly.
