20 One week later

As Song Tiancheng prepared to get up from Su Yunzhu, sweat slid down his back.

Song Tiancheng's arm was still around her waist, his palm pressed against her delicate skin. Just then, his phone rang.

Saturday afternoon sunlight filtered through the hotel's sheer curtains, casting dappled shadows on the messy bed.

He glanced at the screen and saw that it was his mother calling. Without hesitation, he turned the phone face down on the bedside table and buried his head in Su Yunzhu's fair neck again.

"Why didn't you answer?" Su Yunzhu drew circles on his back with her finger.

"Annoying." Song Tiancheng's hand returned to her slender waist. His tone was clearly impatient as he pulled her into his arms again. "I answered yesterday. It's the same old stuff all day long, urging me to take care of the family, urging me to have children. It's sick of hearing it." He tried to dispel the inexplicable unease in his heart with new sensory stimulation. Since he left, Wen Xueyan had completely stopped answering his calls.

Su Yunzhu chuckled softly and asked no further questions.

Song Tiancheng's forehead was still damp with fine sweat.

At this moment, any disturbance from the real world seems particularly jarring.

However, just three minutes later, the phone screen lit up again, and the vibration sounded muffled on the wooden cabinet.

Song Tiancheng glanced at it and then put it back.

Unbeknownst to him, his mother, Qi Dongling, was curled up on the living room floor, cold sweat beading on her forehead, her abdomen wracked with excruciating pain.

Qi Dongling tried to call her husband, Song Minghai, but only heard the message "The user you dialed is not in service area." He had joined a senior citizen tour group yesterday to visit a remote mountainous area.

Despite the excruciating pain, Qi Dongling's fingers trembled as she dialed her daughter-in-law Wen Xueyan's number.

The phone was answered after only one ring.

"Mom?" Wen Xueyan's clear voice came through the phone, accompanied by the sound of keyboard typing, indicating that she was still working overtime in the office.

"Xueyan... my stomach hurts..." Qi Dongling managed to squeeze out a few words, the pain making it almost impossible for her to speak coherently.

Wen Xueyan immediately became alert: "Mom, where are you? At home?"

Upon hearing her mother-in-law's weak response, Wen Xueyan abruptly stopped typing. "Mom, don't be afraid, I'll call an ambulance right away, it'll be there soon!" Her voice was calm and swift, carrying a comforting quality.

After hanging up the phone, she quickly dialed 120, then grabbed her handbag and rushed to the elevator.

Although Wen Xueyan had filed for divorce, she still tried her best to save her mother-in-law, considering that she had always treated her well.

When Wen Xueyan arrived at her mother-in-law's building, the ambulance had just arrived. She quickly guided the medical staff upstairs and found that her mother-in-law was in so much pain that she was barely conscious.

"Acute appendicitis, surgery is necessary immediately." Upon arrival at the hospital, the emergency room doctor made a decisive decision after examination.

Wen Xueyan quickly signed the consent form for the surgery and stayed outside the operating room the entire time. More than an hour later, the surgery was successfully completed, and the doctor came out and told her, "If it had been half an hour later, her life would have been in danger."

After the anesthesia wore off, the old lady slowly woke up in her hospital bed. Seeing Wen Xueyan by her side, tears streamed down her face. She gripped Wen Xueyan's hand tightly, her voice choked with emotion, "Xueyan, thank you, if it weren't for you..."

Wen Xueyan gently squeezed her mother-in-law's hand back: "Mom, I'm so glad you're alright."

After a moment's hesitation, Wen Xueyan asked softly, "Should we notify Tiancheng?"

Wen Xueyan had been wanting Song Tiancheng to come over, after all, he was her biological mother. But she was also puzzled as to why her mother-in-law was calling her. Had her son gotten into trouble again? The police station said he would be detained for five days. She calculated the days and realized he should have been released two days ago. Moreover, Song Tiancheng had called her multiple times the day before yesterday and yesterday, but Wen Xueyan didn't answer. Song Tiancheng had also sent a lot of apology messages.

"Xueyan, I know that anything I say now will seem pale and powerless. Cheating on you and hitting you are the most unforgivable mistakes I have ever made in my life. These five days in the detention center, I have been tormented by remorse every minute. I still love you deeply, and I will prove my change with my actions."

"We once said we would stand side by side like in 'To the Oak Tree,' but I became the storm that destroyed the tree. These days, I reminisce about the past, remembering the times you took such good care of me. I lost the most precious love with my own hands. Forgive me, please don't divorce me, give me another chance."

Wen Xueyan did not delete these messages, not out of affection, but because she felt that these words mentioned his infidelity and could be used as evidence in court.

Thinking about all this, Wen Xueyan keenly guessed that it was highly likely that her mother-in-law's son and husband had not answered the phone in time, otherwise they would not have asked her for help.

Qi Dongling's disappointment was clearly written on her face: "I called him several times, but he didn't answer."

At this moment, Wen Xueyan remembered that the company had an urgent project report that needed to be processed that night.

After a moment of contemplation, she contacted the hospital's care center, carefully selected a professional caregiver for Qi Dongling, explained the precautions and doctor's instructions in detail, and prepaid the fee.

After arranging everything and obtaining her mother-in-law's consent, she walked to the end of the corridor outside the ward, preparing to call Song Tiancheng.

This time, she had no expectations; she was simply fulfilling her duty.

In his hotel room, Song Tiancheng finished showering and grabbed his phone to look at it.

Su Yunzhu noticed that although Song Tiancheng didn't answer the phone, he would still look at the screen immediately every time the phone rang, as if he was expecting someone to call.

She suddenly realized something and asked sourly, "Are you waiting for your wife's call?"

Song Tiancheng frowned but did not answer.

But his silence was the answer.

Yes, he was indeed looking forward to Wen Xueyan's call.

Despite his infidelity and the fact that he hit her, he still secretly hoped to reconcile with her.

In his heart, Wen Xueyan was the ideal wife—gentle, virtuous, knowledgeable, and reasonable. Even when he had neglected her repeatedly in the previous year, she hadn't made a big fuss.

For him, Su Yunzhu was nothing more than a game of passion, a moment of indulgence during a period of marital burnout. Su Yunzhu was a womanizer, and with a fiancé arranged by her family, she had no intention of marrying Song Tiancheng.

He wanted both the stable life Wen Xueyan offered and the new excitement Su Yunzhu brought. He wanted to have his cake and eat it too, forgetting that it was impossible.

The phone rang again.

Song Tiancheng went to get his phone again and found that it was Wen Xueyan calling.

He practically sat up abruptly, shoved Su Yunzhu aside, jumped off the bed barefoot, and rushed to the window, as if this distance would allow him to more clearly perceive the atmosphere on the other end of the phone.

He tried to make his voice sound steady, even with a hint of affection, and answered eagerly: "Xueyan! You finally called me back! Let's not get a divorce, okay? I really know I was wrong. I was a bastard that day, I wasn't human! Please forgive me this time, okay? I promise..."

"Song Tiancheng," Wen Xueyan said coldly, "Mom is in the hospital."

Song Tiancheng was taken aback: "Huh? At the hospital? Is it your mother's check-up? Should I come over right away? Is there anything else you need?" He was unusually proactive, trying to seize this opportunity to make amends and show his concern.

There was a moment of silence on the other end of the phone, a second that felt so long it made Song Tiancheng uneasy.

Then, he heard Wen Xueyan's clear and indifferent voice: "Not my mother. Your mother. She has acute appendicitis and just had surgery."

With a bang, Song Tiancheng felt his mind go completely blank! He remembered his annoyance and disdain when he rejected the call, while on the other end of the line, his mother was in danger!

"Thank you, Xueyan. Which hospital? I'll be right there!"

"City Central Hospital, 7th floor, ward 712." Wen Xueyan gave the address, her tone still businesslike. "I've already hired a caregiver and paid the fee. I still have work to do and need to go back to the company to work overtime." After hanging up, Wen Xueyan gave the caregiver some instructions.

By the time she finished all that, it was already evening. Wen Xueyan walked downstairs at the hospital, and the light of the setting sun fell perfectly on her profile, making her delicate skin seem to glow. A few strands of hair were gently blown by the wind to her cheeks, and she casually and elegantly tucked them behind her ears.

Approaching us were Cheng Boyan and Xu Junhang. Cheng Boyan had returned from a business trip today and had been dragged to the hospital by Xu Junhang to participate in Xu Junxian's consultation, since Dr. Smith's team was also arriving tonight.

Cheng Boyan has made up his mind that he will divorce Xu Junxian regardless of whether she wakes up or not; he will not forgive a woman who has cheated on him. He has already consulted a lawyer, who said that the only way to divorce someone in a vegetative state is through litigation, but with the division of property and shares, it could take a long time. The lawyer's words are making him somewhat irritable.

Cheng Boyan saw Wen Xueyan at this moment. She was wearing a simple beige trench coat. The overtime work these days had made her lose some weight. The belt was loosely tied, outlining her slender waist.

Cheng Boyan paused for a moment. She always had this power; just her figure was enough to calm him down.

Cheng Boyan knew that Wen Xueyan had been very busy with work these past few days. He had originally planned to finish their own work today and then go to see her in the evening, but he didn't expect to run into her here.

Xu Junhang asked, "Engineer Wen, your colleagues said you took leave at the last minute to take care of your mother-in-law. Can your team's project proceed as scheduled today?"

“Okay, I’ll go back to the company to work overtime now.” Wen Xueyan still remembered that President Xu might have suspected her when she returned to Jinglan Peninsula last time, so she didn’t even glance at Cheng Boyan before turning around to leave.

"It seems they have a good relationship. When the mother-in-law was in trouble, the daughter-in-law rushed to the hospital immediately. I also heard that Song Tiancheng bought her a new house not long ago," Xu Junhang said casually.

Just a minute ago, Cheng Boyan was thinking about holding her in his arms tonight, but upon hearing this, he didn't respond, his face remaining expressionless.

"Xueyan! Wait for me!" At this moment, Song Tiancheng also arrived at the hospital and tried to stop Wen Xueyan at the door.

When Song Tiancheng shouted loudly, Cheng Boyan and Xu Junhang both turned around to look.

I really enjoy reading this, please update more!

I'm speechless. Song Tiancheng is an absolute scumbag. He's sleeping with other women while simultaneously refusing to get a divorce.

I feel the same way. Thankfully, the female lead was level-headed and ignored his apology.

Ahhh, don't get stuck here! I want to keep watching!
