Chapter 3 The Situation of the Family Compound

Qian Jiefang saw through her inner thoughts and couldn't help but complain.

"If you ask me, you shouldn't have gotten involved in this back then; it was something that was never even close to happening."

"How can you blame me? Who knew that Gu Yunduan would be so ungrateful? Zhao Hong is from the cultural troupe."

"You're responsible for the trouble you caused."

...

Ye Zhaozhao slept soundly through the night. When she woke up, Gu Yunduan was nowhere to be seen, so she went to the kitchen.

She planned to make potato shredded pancakes and corn and carrot soup. She washed and shredded the potatoes, then added salt, chopped green onions, and flour and mixed them together.

Pan-fry over low heat until golden brown on both sides, then it's ready to serve. Corn and carrot soup is easy to make; just cut the corn and carrot into chunks.

Add salt, sugar, and chicken bouillon, then simmer until cooked. Sprinkle with chopped green onions before serving.

"Brother, it smells so good! Who's cooking?"

"Let's go take a look."

Tie Zhu and Sha Zhu arrived at Ye Zhaozhao's house. Only after she put the food on the table did they realize that two children had come to the house.

Only after asking did I learn that they were Sun Xiuhua's sons.

"Hello, Auntie. We heard from Mother that you are the wife of the cold-faced King of Hell."

Cold-faced Yama? Gu Yunduan? I didn't expect him to have such a nickname. Ye Zhaozhao invited them to dinner together.

The two were conflicted. Their mother had said they couldn't eat at other people's houses. Seeing that they were about to leave, Ye Zhaozhao gave them four wraps.

"Thank you, Auntie. We're leaving now."

"You're welcome, okay."

The two women took the rolled pancakes home. When Sun Xiuhua saw that her two sons were holding white flour rolled pancakes, she guessed that they were given to her by Ye Zhaozhao.

No one else would be so generous, giving away two pieces of white flour pancakes at once, and it really was her.

The two children had been craving it all the way and were about to take a bite when Sun Xiuhua stopped them.

"Put it on the table and eat it with your dad."

With both white flour and oil, Sun Xiuhua's family enjoyed a delicious breakfast thanks to these four pancakes.

Gu Yunduan returned carrying firewood, and Ye Zhaozhao quickly invited him to eat. Gu Yunduan washed his hands and sat down.

He was amazed by the first bite. He didn't expect Ye Zhaozhao to be such a good cook. The pancake was crispy and fragrant, and paired with the chili sauce she brought.

One bite, and it was absolutely divine, a heavenly delicacy. This chili sauce was from the Ye family and it was brand new, so Ye Zhaozhao took it out and ate it. Why not eat it if you can?

Ye Zhaozhao made a total of twenty pancakes. She ate three, gave two to the Tiezhu brothers, and the remaining fifteen went into Gu Yunduan's stomach.

He also finished off a small pot of corn and radish soup, which gave Ye Zhaozhao a new understanding of his appetite.

"From now on, I will cook at home and won't have to get food from the cafeteria anymore."

"good."

Gu Yunduan readily agreed. His wife's cooking was so good, and he wasn't being unreasonable to insist on eating in the cafeteria; he was already tired of it.

After finishing the meal, Gu Yunduan volunteered to wash the dishes, and then went to the military base.

Ye Zhaozhao tidied up quickly and went to find Sun Xiuhua. As soon as she entered the yard, she saw that there were many vegetables planted in the yard.

"Sister-in-law Sun, you take such good care of your yard. I'll plant some vegetables there too."

Upon hearing that Ye Zhaozhao wanted to grow vegetables, Sun Xiuhua looked at her with even more affection, grabbed her hand, and explained how to grow vegetables.

"Zhaozhao, in this residential compound, only you and I grow vegetables in the yard. Other families either find it troublesome or think it doesn't look good."

"I think it's nice to grow vegetables in the yard."

Ye Zhaozhao was telling the truth. In this day and age, what is more important than having a full stomach? She immediately wrote it down carefully.

"Sister-in-law Sun, do you know where I can buy seeds?"

"What do you want to buy? I have some here, I'll go get it for you."

Sun Xiuhua gave her a large bag of seeds and told her not to be shy and to return them to her when she was done using them.

Seeing that Sun Xiuhua was easy to get along with, Ye Zhaozhao didn't stand on ceremony with her and said that she wanted to go to the village to exchange some eggs and then go to the supply and marketing cooperative to buy some things.

“Perfect timing. I need to go get some cloth to make clothes for the two boys. I’ll go with you.”

"good."

The two went out together. Tie Zhu and Sha Zhu had long since disappeared. They walked for half an hour to reach the village. Sun Xiuhua, familiar with the way, led Ye Zhaozhao to a house in the village that had eggs.

After walking through half a village and exchanging for thirty eggs, Ye Zhaozhao deeply felt how scarce resources were in that era.

After exchanging the eggs, Sun Xiuhua saw that there were still chicks in the village. She said that there were also restrictions on raising chickens in the military region.

Two people can raise a maximum of four chickens, which is enough. Ye Zhaozhao exchanged four chicks and a basket.

"Sister-in-law Sun, aren't you going to get something else?"

"We don't need it at home right now, let's come back to exchange it later."

On their way to the supply and marketing cooperative, Sun Xiuhua introduced Ye Zhaozhao to the situation of the family compound.

"Now that I've told you, you'll have a general idea. When you meet the people later, you'll be able to recognize them all."

"Um."

When they arrived at the supply and marketing cooperative, Ye Zhaozhao took out the tickets. She had organized them last night and brought all the tickets that were about to expire today.

Salt, soy sauce, vinegar, pastries, cigarettes, alcohol, fruit candy, enamel water cups, and vegetables too.

She bought quite a lot.

Seeing Ye Zhaozhao's extravagant gesture, not only were the girls next to her stunned, but even Sun Xiuhua was speechless.

However, he knew that Gu Yunduan received a considerable monthly allowance, so he didn't say anything and hurried off to buy the fabric.

But the young women were different. They were all sent to the countryside for work. Just by looking at Ye Zhaozhao, they knew she was a military wife. They never expected that military wives had such a good life.

After buying their things, the two headed back. On the way, they saw fishermen selling fish again. Ye Zhaozhao bought two bass, but she wanted to buy some other things as well.

Sun Xiuhua stopped them.
