Chapter 27: A Visitor

"She is not from our second room!" Yu Fuling frowned and looked unhappy. Meng Yujiao had taken off all her clothes and climbed onto Yu Jinyan's bed. How could she be worthy of her younger brother!

"Sister..." Yu Qizhe's eyebrows slightly pulled.

Yu Fuling didn't dare to grumble anymore. She picked up her sewing basket and said, "You've been reading for the whole afternoon. Rest your eyes and go out for a walk."

Yu Qizhe responded lightly, and Yu Fuling returned to her room carrying the sewing basket.

When Yu Jiao arrived at the kitchen, Song was already cooking dinner. She had steamed a pot of steamed buns and was sitting under the stove making a fire.

Seeing Yu Jiao coming over, Song smiled and said, "You must be tired after writing for the whole afternoon. Go and take a rest. I can handle it by myself."

Yu Jiao saw a basket of mushrooms on the ground and shook her head. "Writing is not tiring at all. Did you pick these mushrooms in the mountains?"

"I picked it up at the foot of the mountain behind. Steam the buns. I'll make some mushroom dumpling soup for us to drink in the evening." Song fiddled with the flame in the stove and said with a gentle smile.

Yu Jiao asked curiously, "Aunt Song, how do you eat these mushrooms?"

There are a lot of chicken leg mushrooms in the basket. When Yu Jiao lived in the mountains with her grandfather when she was a child, she often picked various mushrooms to cook. The most common mushroom in the mountains is chicken leg mushroom. It is tender and smooth when fried, and it tastes even more delicious when stewed with pheasant in the mountains.

Song said, "We cook them more often in soup. Some people in the village also stir-fry them. We have fried them several times, but they are always unpalatable. It's strange that these mushrooms are unpalatable when fried, but they taste great in soup."

Yu Jiao couldn't help but chuckle. Mushrooms grow in the mountains, exposed to the wind and sun, and grow on soil and rotten branches. Dust can easily squeeze into the mushroom gills, so they have to be carefully cleaned, otherwise they will taste unpleasant. But she couldn't tell Song directly that it was because she didn't clean the mushrooms cleanly.

Yu Jiao took some chicken leg mushrooms out of the basket and said to Song, "Aunt, I'll stir-fry some chicken leg mushrooms for you to try. I made them at home before, and they don't taste bad when they're stir-fried."

"Okay, I'll light the fire for you later." Song was a very easy-going person and responded with a smile.

Yu Jiao cut off all the dirt at the bottom of the chicken leg mushrooms with a knife, washed them one by one in water, cut them into slices and put them in a basin. Then she turned around and went to the vegetable garden in the backyard of Yu's house, picked some red peppers and two cucumbers, and after returning to the kitchen, she chopped garlic and made a smashed cucumber.

Although the whole Yu family was having this meal together, Yu Jiao didn't want to put herself in a difficult position. Eating is the most important thing in the world, and she had to eat well under limited conditions.

After Song cooked the mushroom dumpling soup, she helped Yu Jiao light the fire and watched her stir-fry chicken leg mushrooms.

Yu Jiao quickly heated the oil in the wok and added garlic and chili peppers. Soon the aroma filled the entire kitchen. Before the dish was even put into the wok, Song couldn't stop exclaiming, "What a nice smell!"

After the chicken leg mushroom slices were put into the pot, Yu Jiao fried them to make them taste like meat. Yu Fuling smelled the smell and came to the kitchen. Seeing that it was Yu Jiao cooking, she wanted to say something sarcastic, but her mouth couldn't stop drooling. She was afraid that saliva would flow out if she opened her mouth, so she sniffed her nose and stared at the pot eagerly.

Yu Qizhe sat under the locust tree in the yard, listening to the sizzling sounds of cooking in the kitchen, looking up at the starry sky in the distance. His clear peach blossom eyes were now lonely and empty, and his thin figure leaning against the tree looked particularly desolate.

There was a knock on the door. Yu Qizhe came to his senses, walked to the gate, and after opening it, a hint of surprise flashed across his pupils, but he quickly calmed down.

The woman standing outside the door was also a little surprised. She slightly curved her thin eyebrows and showed a beautiful and gentle smile on her oval face, "I'm here to get some cough medicine for grandma."

Her voice was soft and gentle, and her posture was graceful and elegant.

Yu Qizhe nodded slightly, stepped aside expressionlessly, and invited the person into the yard.
