Chapter 14: Evil Spirit

"Grandma Wen, let's eat first! I have to carve them out after dinner." Leng You tugged at the corner of Wen Jiuyue's clothes.

"Ah...ah? Okay...ok, let's eat." Wen Jiuyue's mind was scattered, his feet were dizzy, he nodded unconsciously, turned and walked towards the kitchen.

Just like yesterday, Xiang Wentian did not have dinner with Leng You and the others. Instead, he brought a large bowl of rabbit meat stewed with potatoes (this was something Leng You specifically asked Wen Jiuyue for before leaving the house in the morning, after all, there were plenty of rabbits) back to Xiang Huaixin.

After Leng You and Wen Jiuyue finished their meal, he came back to help Leng You peel ginseng.

Although the conditions are limited, Leng You can make full use of them.

She dried the ginseng in a fire kang and an iron pot. When the iron pot was heated by the earth stove, the temperature of the fire kang would also rise, and the fire kang was a ready-made and safest large oven.

Even if they are not completely dry after a night of baking, Wen Jiuyue can continue drying them on the kang tomorrow when she is alone at home, and she and Xiang Wentian can continue to dig the remaining ginseng.

It is not so easy to dry ginseng in an iron pot. You cannot put the ginseng directly into the pot, as that will scald the ginseng.

A rack needs to be set up underneath, and to prevent the iron rack from being too hot and damaging the ginseng, it needs to be wrapped with straw or something like that.

Fortunately, Xiang Wentian was a genius among geniuses. After Leng You's brief reminder, he fully understood the whole meaning. He adjusted the size of the fire, turned the ginseng over, changed the position of the ginseng... everything was done in an orderly manner.

Not to mention Wen Jiuyue, when her husband was alive, she often helped to collect, dry, and peel herbs. Even though she had never peeled and processed a rare and precious medicinal material like ginseng, she was obviously much more familiar with this job than Leng You and Xiang Wentian.

"Go to bed, I'll watch over you." Xiang Wentian raised his wrist and looked at it. It was already half past ten in the evening. He looked at the end of the kang again and saw that there was enough space left for a little guy like Leng You to sleep.

"Brother, you go back! Just put them on the kang and dry them slowly so as not to disturb my and Grandma Wen's rest." Leng You felt very energetic and not sleepy at all.

After more than seven hours of drying, the root part of the ginseng has been completely dry, most of the moisture in the main part has been dissipated, and the entire body has shrunk greatly.

Next, just place it on the kang for another day or two to dry completely and then store it.

"I'll watch over you. You're so young, you can't stay up too late. Go to sleep.

Xiaotian, why don’t you just live here? "

Leng You is still young, so Wen Jiuyue doesn’t have so many concerns.

"I'm going back and will come earlier tomorrow." Xiang Wentian put on his military coat and disappeared out the door in a blink of an eye.

"Grandma Wen, the kang is not that hot anymore. Don't worry about them. You can go to sleep too! You have to get up early tomorrow." After Wen Jiuyue took off her coat and stuffed it into the quilt, Leng You stretched out her little hand and grabbed Wen Jiuyue's collar.

"Youyou, do you really want to go into the valley with Xiaotian tomorrow?" Although Wen Jiuyue had been persuaded by Leng You all night and had Xiang Wentian's assurance, he still couldn't let go.

The main reason is that the villagers of Daheishan have had their brains thoroughly cleansed by all kinds of horror legends about the "Valley of the Souls" for generations, and there were indeed some people who had the courage to enter the valley, but they all showed abnormal conditions after coming out and died inexplicably one after another soon after.

What’s even more bizarre is that after that, people who used to live closer to the valley also started to have accidents at home. Either someone in the family got injured accidentally, or suddenly fell seriously ill and died. Moreover, every family was so poor that they couldn’t even make ends meet.

At first, the villagers did not think too much about it until one day the only son of a family suddenly went crazy for no reason. Many doctors in and out of the village were consulted, but none of them could help him.

In desperation, the family had to secretly find a celestial being from another village (in those special times, such superstitious activities were absolutely prohibited). The celestial being lit incense and burned paper, and after jumping up and down for a while, his face immediately changed drastically.

From then on, the people of Daheishan Village finally had answers to all the strange things happening in the village. It turned out that all the disasters came from this deep valley.

According to Daxianer, this valley did not exist originally. In the past, the vast plain covering hundreds of miles was covered with continuous mountains.

There is a thousand-year-old snake demon with nine heads who has been practicing in the mountains.

Just when the practice reached a critical moment, a villager who went up the mountain to chop wood discovered this huge snake covered with black mist. In extreme fear, he chopped down the Hydra's body with a machete and cut it into two pieces.

A sharp pain pulled the Hydra back from the underworld, only to find that its body had been split into two, and the true energy that it had painstakingly cultivated for thousands of years was also dissipating bit by bit.

The snake demon was furious and dragged half of its body to bite off the villager's head, but it could not resist the trend of its true energy gradually dissipating.

In great rage, it disappeared in a flash and reappeared in the villager's home. After a puff of black smoke, the family of the villager who cut off its body all looked stupid.

It turns out that the snake demon devoured the souls of the villagers' families.

This was not the end. The snake demon then slipped into other homes in the village and devoured the souls of dozens of villagers.

The reason why the snake demon did this, in addition to revenge, was to use human souls to feed its soul, in order to prevent its soul from being destroyed after its true energy was dissipated.

In this way, the snake demon madly killed the villagers, causing the people of Daheishan Village to be almost extinct.

The villagers were left with nowhere else to go and had to kneel down and beg the Jade Emperor.

The Jade Emperor was furious when he heard about this and immediately ordered the Thunder God to subdue the snake demon. The Thunder God obeyed the order and immediately arrived on a cloud.

A huge thunderbolt struck directly towards the snake demon that was dragging half of its body and harming the villagers.

The snake demon's face changed drastically upon seeing this, and he immediately turned around and ran away. Just as he reached the mountain where he had been entrenched for a long time, a bigger thunderbolt struck down, hitting the snake demon and creating a deep valley in the mountain at the same time.

The snake demon's soul was shattered by lightning, leaving only a wisp of consciousness in its body and it fell to the bottom of the valley.

The snake demon felt extremely aggrieved and told the god of thunder about his grievances.

The Jade Emperor therefore showed leniency and spared the snake demon's last wisp of consciousness, but trapped it at the bottom of the valley and promised that the entire valley would belong to the snake demon, and that the snake demon had the right to take the life of anyone who invaded or actively harmed it.

As for why people who lived closer to the valley encountered bad luck, the explanation given by Daxianer was:

The snake demon's thousand years of practice were destroyed, and he was trapped at the bottom of the valley by the Jade Emperor. His anger and resentment gathered together to form a strong evil spirit.

The evil spirit spread from inside the valley to the outside, and then to the surrounding areas of the valley.

Anyone who comes into contact with this evil spirit will be killed or injured at best, or the whole family will be wiped out at worst.
