Chapter 1042 Premature Birth
Lin Yuesha had barely finished speaking when a female worker ran up to deliver a message: "Young Madam, Physician Yan requests your presence."
Despite the cold weather, the female workers were sweating profusely, their bangs soaked through and clinging damply to their foreheads.
The female worker, panting heavily, didn't even bother to wipe her sweat with a handkerchief.
Lin Yuesha hurried out the door, only to realize a problem: the maid who delivered the letter hadn't explained clearly, and Lin Yuesha herself had forgotten to ask in her haste, so she didn't know where Yan Yan was.
When they arrived near the workshop, Xie Guangping's wife, Qian, was waiting anxiously.
"What happened?"
Lin Yuesha was in a hurry. The road was slippery due to the snow. There was a stone that was covered by snow and could not be seen clearly. Lin Yuesha tripped and fell. Although the snow cushioned her fall, it still hurt a lot.
"Liu the locksmith's wife fell and started bleeding; her condition is very bad now."
Yan Yan urged Lin Yuesha to get some aged ginseng, saying that saving her life was the priority.
Right now, Liu the locksmith's wife has been carried to Yan Yan's courtyard, where Yan Yan and Lian Qiao are both.
Lin Yuesha led Qian back to the courtyard to get the old ginseng and asked, "I remember that Liu the locksmith's wife is not yet due, is she?"
"It's only been eight months at most."
Qian frowned, a look of distress on her face. Liu the locksmith's wife had broken her water and was probably about to give birth. It was said that the baby was likely to survive, but the chances were slim.
As they spoke, Lin Yuesha arrived at Yan Yan's courtyard. Lian Qiao was boiling water, while Liu Suojiang was standing next to the large pot, constantly pulling at his hair, feeling very guilty.
Recently, his wife's pregnancy has become more difficult, and he assumed that it would be inconvenient as her pregnancy progressed, so Liu the locksmith didn't pay much attention to it.
It snowed today. Before going to work, he told his wife to stay home and rest, and that he would bring her lunch from the canteen.
Unexpectedly, his wife, who was always busy, slipped and fell while sweeping snow in the yard.
Thanks to the patrol team, who heard his wife's cries for help in time, they were able to call for Dr. Yan.
"It's all my fault!"
With bloodshot eyes, Liu the locksmith slapped himself hard across the face.
He's not thinking about the child right now; his wife is having a difficult childbirth, and it's uncertain whether she can be saved.
What if both the baby and the body were to die... Liu the locksmith dared not even think about it.
"You can't help here, calm down first."
Only those who were helping remained in the courtyard; the rest went about their own business.
A large, chaotic crowd can be a hindrance rather than a help.
Lin Yuesha cleared the area and instructed the guards to take Liu the locksmith next door. His wife was giving birth and screaming in agony, so he needed to stay with her the whole time.
These days, life is tough for women. Childbirth is a life-or-death ordeal; whether they can get through it depends on fate.
"Sister Yan, do you need my help?"
Lin Yuesha had some experience, so she took the initiative to ask.
“Sister Yue Sha, the baby is not big, so it shouldn’t be difficult to give birth. The difficulty lies in feeding the baby afterward.”
The saying "seven out of ten live, eight out of ten don't" is a folk saying that Yan Yan does not agree with.
Whether a baby is seven or eight months old, the first issue after birth is feeding.
Some babies are very young and have difficulty breathing, so they don't suckle.
Moreover, Liu the locksmith's wife currently has no breast milk, so there's no way to feed the baby after it's born.
"I have already had someone make millet porridge, so we'll use that as a temporary substitute."
Yan Yan had no one else available, so she consulted with Lin Yuesha to see if they could find a wet nurse for the baby.
There are currently no women breastfeeding in the fishing village, so there is no milk available.
"OK."
Lin Yuesha agreed, and first asked a woman with breast milk to stay in the fishing village for a while, so that she could breastfeed Liu the locksmith's wife once she had enough milk.
As it turned out, Yan Yan was too optimistic. In the afternoon, Liu the locksmith's wife gave birth to a daughter. The baby was thin and small, with bluish-purple skin, weighing only three pounds, and her cries were as weak as a kitten's.
Yan Yan and Lian Qiao were not optimistic. Although they were doctors, they were not good at taking care of newborns.
Lin Yuesha sent someone to the city to invite a doctor, but when the doctor heard that the baby was born at eight months, he waved his hand repeatedly, and no one was willing to come.
"Young Madam, could you please help me name the little girl?"
When Liu the locksmith's wife woke up and heard that the child was still alive, she breathed a sigh of relief.
Even if the child is pitiful and doesn't survive, she still hopes the child will have a name when she misses him in the future.
"How about calling her Anning?"
Lin Yuesha washed her hands and changed her clothes. She had heard that premature babies are very fragile and should try not to have too much contact with people.
Liu the locksmith changed his clothes, glanced at the child, and was then chased out by Yan Yan.
These past few days, she has left the mother and daughter in the yard, taking care of them personally.
The woman with breast milk had not yet arrived, so Lin Yuesha fed Xiao Anning rice porridge with a small spoon. She found that Xiao Anning's swallowing ability was not strong, and it took her a long time to swallow a mouthful.
Therefore, it requires patience to feed them.
With the advancement of modern medicine, there are various medications, nasogastric tubes, and formula milk powder specially prepared for premature infants, which is something that Daqi could never even imagine.
Premature babies have weak digestive systems and cannot drink cow's milk or goat's milk, so the only solution is to find a wet nurse who can produce a good amount of breast milk.
Xiao Anning seemed to be very afraid of the cold, so Lin Yuesha prepared a soft swaddle and specially assigned guards to keep watch at night and keep the fire burning to ensure the indoor temperature.
After arriving at the fishing village, the wet nurse was required to take a bath and be clean before being allowed to appear in public, which greatly reduced the risk of Xiao Anning contracting the virus.
The first few days were a bit difficult. Little Anning couldn't suckle, so the wet nurse had to express the milk and feed her with a spoon.
Xiao Anning ate very little; she ate a few bites and fell asleep shortly afterward.
Lin Yuesha had only a vague understanding of this, but she also knew that it was not good for Xiao Anning if she didn't drink milk for too long, as it could easily lead to hypoglycemia.
With her limited basic knowledge, Lin Yuesha, along with Yan Yan and Lian Qiao, worked together to gradually figure out Xiao Anning's situation, recording it in a notebook and comparing it daily.
It wasn't until the twelfth lunar month, more than a month later, that Xiao Anning's situation finally stabilized.
Liu the locksmith's wife has started producing milk, and little Anning has learned to suckle. She drinks milk regularly every day, and the diapers are washed and dried on the heated brick bed. She is cleaned very frequently.
A little over a month ago, her bluish-purple face had become fair and chubby, and when she stepped on the scale, she weighed a whopping seven pounds.
Lin Yuesha was still not entirely at ease, so she hired a doctor who specialized in treating children. The doctor was quite incredulous when he heard that Xiao Anning was born at eight months old.
Liu the locksmith and his wife were so grateful they didn't know what to say. They decided to use the money they had earned to repay Lin Yuesha.
"How about we hold a belated full moon celebration in the twelfth lunar month, so we can have a good time?"
Lin Yuesha readily agreed, saying that there was no need to repay her; it would be better for everyone in the fishing village to get together and have a lively meal.
On the surface, she, Yan Yan, and Lian Qiao were busy with various tasks, but in reality, Xiao Anning was safe and sound, and many other people were involved.
The craftsmen comforted Liu the locksmith and occasionally came over to help add firewood. The female workers in the workshop used their spare time to make small quilts, shoes, hats, socks, and other items. No one took credit; everyone was quietly doing what they could.
