Chapter 1055 Candied Hawthorn
Despite his young age, Tiger speaks like a little adult, with a serious demeanor that makes him look somewhat comical.
"Tiger, look at these candied hawthorns. They're big and red, with crispy syrup that melts in your mouth. They're sweet and sour, that's what makes them delicious."
Lin Yuesha bought another skewer, took a bite first, and then commented.
Tiger swallowed hard and awkwardly turned his head away. He had never eaten candied hawthorn before, but he had eaten hawthorn berries. Hawthorn berries coated in syrup should be mostly sweet, right?
"Tiger, are you really not going to eat?"
Lin Yuesha glanced at the child out of the corner of her eye and said with a mischievous smile.
After all, they are just children, and it's rare to see someone with self-control like Tiger.
"Sister, I don't want to eat."
Tiger didn't dare turn around, afraid he wouldn't be able to control himself, and his tone became less firm.
"But my sister can't finish them all. What should we do if we throw away the candied hawthorns that we can't finish?"
There were seven candied hawthorns on a string. Lin Yuesha only ate one to taste it, and deliberately looked at the rest with difficulty.
Upon hearing this, Hu Zi turned around and said seriously, "Sister Lin, my grandma said that there are many poor people who don't have enough to eat or wear, so we shouldn't waste food."
"So, could you help your sister eat it?"
Lin Yuesha continued to use her tricks on Hu Zi, pretending to be in a difficult situation.
"Sister, you and Brother Qi are husband and wife. Shouldn't you give Brother Qi the food you don't like?"
After deep thought, Tiger asked a soul-searching question.
Lin Yuesha paused for a moment, then asked, "Why should we give it to him?"
“My grandma would give all the leftovers to my grandpa. He said that a real man should treat his wife like this, and that he should pick up the leftovers when necessary. We are an old married couple and we don’t distinguish between each other.”
After Hu Zi finished speaking, he looked at Qi Heng, and after waiting for a moment and seeing that Qi Heng did not react, he asked, "Brother Qi, why aren't you eating?"
Brother Qi isn't eating. Could it be that he dislikes Sister Lin? As a man, you can't treat your wife like that.
"Because Brother Qi has bad teeth, he can't eat candied hawthorns."
Qi Heng found a plausible excuse, squatted down, and handed the candied hawthorn to Hu Zi.
"Tiger, are you not eating because you don't want to eat your sister?"
For the first time, Lin Yuesha realized how tiring it was to persuade a child to eat a snack.
Tiger was well-mannered and did not develop a habit of taking advantage of others because of poverty.
"no."
Tiger hesitated for a moment, then took it and said softly, "Thank you, Sister Lin."
He stared at the candied hawthorn for a long time before taking a small bite, squinting his eyes to savor it.
No wonder everyone says candied hawthorn is delicious, sweet and sour. He has never eaten anything better than candied hawthorn, even better than the melon seeds and peanuts prepared at home for the New Year.
After eating two, Tiger stopped eating them and wrapped them in oil paper.
"Why aren't you eating? Is it not to your liking?"
Lin Yuesha saw that there were also vendors selling roasted chestnuts ahead, so she bought another portion.
"No, I want to save the rest for my grandparents. There are six fruits in total, two for each of us."
After Hu Zi finished speaking, his face turned red, and he said shyly.
The little boy was so sensible it was heartbreaking. Lin Yuesha used the same trick again and handed the chestnut to Hu Zi.
"Thank you, Sister Lin."
The chestnuts are large and have been roasted until they split open. You can easily peel them to reveal the piping hot, sweet, and glutinous yellow flesh inside.
Tiger looked completely absorbed, but the little boy had great self-control; after eating two, he stopped.
"Tiger, where are you going?"
At the market, Tiger bumped into his neighbor, who looked at Qi Heng and Lin Yuesha suspiciously and asked, "Who are you? You're not slave traders, are you?"
"No, that's not true!"
Tiger was furious. He said that Brother Qi and Sister Lin were good people, not slave traders.
The two took his grandmother, who had fallen, home and even offered to help them buy meat, so they wouldn't be slandered.
His neighbors appeared to care, but in reality, they thought Tiger was young and immature, spoke sarcastically, and often looked down on him.
The neighbor's family was slightly better off, and they often tried to give him stale food that attracted flies. At first, Tiger didn't understand and thought the neighbor was being kind. After eating it, he vomited and had diarrhea.
For this, he was ridiculed by his neighbors, who called him a worthless beggar who thought he was born into wealth.
Faced with his neighbor's sarcastic remarks, Tiger cautiously stepped back.
"We are Tiger's parents' friends."
Lin Yuesha patted Hu Zi's head and said politely, "I'm just bringing him to the market for a stroll, not acting as a child trafficker."
Originally, Lin Yuesha only wanted to do good deeds and buy pork for the old lady, and that would be the end of their relationship. But after bringing Huzi out, she really liked this little boy who pretended to be mature for his age.
"Friends? His parents haven't come back for years, they're probably dead somewhere, how could he possibly have friends?"
The neighbor's wife clicked her tongue in amazement, then crossed her arms and said, "You should at least know the facts before you lie. You don't know, do you? Tiger's parents are gambling addicts. Because they couldn't pay their gambling debts, they abandoned their children in Yingcheng and ran away!"
"You're talking nonsense!"
Tiger's eyes immediately reddened upon hearing this. His parents were working far away from home, not the gambling addicts the neighbors were talking about!
Although his parents haven't come home for so many years, Tiger believes they will come back to find him.
"Go ask around, who in the alley doesn't know this?"
The neighbor's wife rolled her eyes. She wasn't lying at all.
Grandma Hu worked three jobs, day and night, and even stayed up late at night making insoles. Her eyesight was almost ruined. All she did was earn more money to pay off her son and daughter-in-law's gambling debts.
What a tragedy! Everyone says raising a son is for old age security, but it all depends on what kind of son you have.
Having one gambler in the family is bad enough, but then he marries another gambler, making it a double gambler family.
"Brother Qi, Sister Lin, my parents are not gamblers."
Tiger wiped away his tears, looking utterly pitiful.
He didn't actually know where his parents had gone, and he had heard rumors, but he believed that his parents wouldn't abandon his grandparents or leave him behind.
"no."
Lin Yuesha held Huzi in her arms, looking very distressed.
Regardless of his parents' background, Tiger is innocent. As a neighbor, it's really unethical to reopen old wounds at this time.
"Yes, we are not friends of Tiger's parents, but I like Tiger very much and want to adopt him as my godson."
As Lin Yuesha spoke, she took out a smooth and translucent jade pendant from her purse and hung it on Hu Zi's chest. The jade pendant was a token of their love.
She finds it pleasing to the eye, she's happy with it, it's that simple.
When the neighbor's wife saw the jade pendant, her eyes were filled with greed.
The man and woman in front of them were dressed in expensive clothes and looked like wealthy people. They casually pulled out a jade pendant, which was of excellent quality.
"Young lady, my Iron Hammer is an only son, without any older sister. Why don't you adopt Iron Hammer as your younger brother?"
The neighbor's wife smiled ingratiatingly and pushed out her snot-nosed, dim-witted son. The son chuckled twice and said, "Sister, you're so pretty. Be my wife, and I'll hunt birds for you to eat!"
