Chapter 1145 Execution
Old Mrs. Lin was heartbroken. Her son was her only support. Otherwise, she, an old woman, would have to bury her son, be destitute and alone in her old age, and die far from home. Her life would have been utterly miserable.
Old Mrs. Lin was reluctant to return to her hometown. She had become accustomed to the prosperity of the capital and the taste of bird's nest porridge. How could she bear to go back to eating wild vegetables?
“My son, don’t worry. Lin Yuesha is your own daughter. No matter what, she wouldn’t be so heartless. She probably just wants to teach you a lesson. She still holds a grudge about what happened back then.”
Grandma Lin found a reason that was somewhat plausible, but her heart sank little by little.
Lin Yuesha, that wretched girl, is an ungrateful wretch. Chen Shi was unchaste, remarried, and had another child. It's obvious she wouldn't care about their past relationship.
Grandma Lin saw things clearly. If Lin Yuesha hadn't transformed from a sparrow into a phoenix, Lin Shusheng would still have a glimmer of hope. But right now, Lin Yuesha's status and position were precisely Lin Shusheng's death warrant.
"Mom, these dumplings don't taste right. They're not as good as the ones you make."
To this day, Lin Shusheng regrets it. If he hadn't been so outstanding in his studies and passed the imperial examination, he could have stayed in the countryside, opened a school, and still lived a comfortable life.
As the Prefect of the Capital, the official in charge of governing the people of the capital, he had many schemes and demands.
He wanted to go back to the countryside and missed the taste of his hometown cuisine.
Grandma Lin lowered her eyes; this was probably impossible.
After her son died, she had to use a thin coffin to bury his body. If she wanted to transport it from the capital to the south, the weather wouldn't allow it, unless she replenished the ice along the way. Even if Old Madam Lin sold all her jewelry, the money she would spend wouldn't be enough.
After eating dumplings, Lin Shusheng was thirsty, so he ate an apple. He looked up and saw that he was surrounded by people, which made him dizzy.
"Father, my sister didn't come."
Lin Yue'e instructed the old woman to carry her forward, and said with tears streaming down her face.
The execution was carried out at noon, and then everything came to an end.
Lin Yuesha treated her own father this way hoping that Lin Shusheng would harbor resentment and haunt her even as a ghost.
"Yue Sha didn't come?"
Lin Shusheng was stunned, and the teacup in his hand fell to the ground and shattered with a thud.
"Otherwise, do you think Her Majesty the Empress would come to watch the execution? You're about to die and you're still so naive."
Jiao Niang couldn't hold back any longer and said sarcastically, "I just hope the knife is sharpened quickly so that one cut can take off a head. It's better than a dull knife constantly cutting, just like cutting melons and vegetables."
"Shut up, you bitch!"
Lin Shusheng was furious. He simply couldn't believe he was going to die. His mother was right; Lin Yuesha was just trying to scare her own father.
"Father, you can go in peace. Your daughter will take good care of Grandmother."
Lin Yue'e cried and sobbed, which frightened and annoyed Lin Shusheng, making him tremble all over.
Time flies, and it was almost noon when Old Madam Lin and her entourage were driven off the platform.
The executioner opened a booklet and read aloud the crimes of Lin Shusheng and Jiao Niang. He said that Lin Shusheng killed an innocent girl to gain merit and deliberately created panic. The onlookers were in an uproar! Such a heinous person should be torn apart by five horses, and even beheading would be too lenient for him.
"I repent. I didn't do the murder. It was Qin Shi. Qin Shi did it. It was that vicious woman's idea!"
When Lin Shusheng realized they were serious, he cried and screamed, tears and snot streaming down his face, struggling desperately.
He was so frightened that he wet his pants, leaving a suspicious water stain on the ground.
The surrounding people burst into laughter upon seeing this.
Lin Shusheng was once a high-ranking official whom the people of the capital could not possibly befriend, but now he is a prisoner about to be beheaded, both pitiful and hateful.
“Father, you…”
Lin Yue'e gritted her teeth. Her mother was indeed wrong, but to pin all the blame on a dead person, Lin Shu was facing death and still had no sense of responsibility!
“A wife should be virtuous. If my son hadn’t married that jinx Qin, how could he have…”
Old Mrs. Lin cried and wailed, stamping her feet and beating her chest, but she dared not accuse Lin Yuesha. She could see clearly that with Lin Shusheng dead, the situation was hopeless. If Old Mrs. Lin wanted to enjoy her old age in peace, she had to keep the money in her hands, and she would inevitably have to fight with that little hussy Lin Yue'e.
Lin Yue'e thought she was a burden and probably harbored ill intentions.
"It's noon, carry out the execution!"
The executioner struck the wooden clapper, threw away the execution order, and the executioner drank a bowl of wine and was already standing behind Lin Shusheng and Jiaoniang.
"The former Prefect of the Capital has been reduced to a prisoner; he deserves it!"
"That corrupt official who killed the people deserves to die!"
The people clapped and cheered, staring at the executioner's blade, hoping everything would be done quickly.
"You can't kill me! My daughter is the Empress!"
Lin Shusheng cursed, "You dare to lay a hand on me and see what happens!"
Lin Yuesha could clearly hear Lin Shusheng's cursing from the teahouse. She rubbed her temples and said, "As expected, Lin Shusheng wanted to smear me before he died. He was afraid that the people wouldn't know about our relationship."
The executioner had already raised his cleaver. Lin Yuesha opened her eyes wide, held her breath, and waited for the next scene.
Just as the broadsword was swung down, a pair of hands covered Lin Yuesha's eyes.
"My wife, it's best not to watch this bloody scene."
Qi Heng sighed softly. Lin Shusheng was Lin Yuesha's father, and that couldn't be changed. He worried that his wife would enjoy watching it now, but would have nightmares at night.
Lin Yuesha wasn't very brave; most of the time, she just toughed it out.
In the fishing village in the north, the couple shared a room. Qi Heng often heard Lin Yuesha waking up and talking in her sleep. Each time, he would hold her in his arms to comfort her, and only then could Lin Yuesha sleep soundly.
