Chapter 249 The Bet
The old woman's attitude shattered Lin Yuesha's worldview. She really wanted to have a big fight with her, but she held back.
“Miss, this clinic is the closest to our residence, so I brought Da Niu’er here.”
Liu Quan was in a very awkward situation because he had no money.
During his escape to the north, Liu Quan saw far too many people starving to death on the way, with no food to eat.
"Let's go see Big Girl."
The three of them went to the backyard, where Liu Quan's wife was sitting on the steps with her daughter, Da Niu'er, in her arms. She took off her coat and covered Da Niu'er with it.
Spring has arrived, but it's still chilly in the mornings and evenings.
"Miss?"
Liu Quanjia's eyes were unfocused, and it took him a long time to make out who it was.
"Yes, it's me."
Lin Yuesha bent down and touched Da Niu'er's head. She had a high fever and was delirious. If the fever didn't go down, she might not make it through the night.
In ancient times, medical care was underdeveloped, and even a minor cold could kill a person.
"Why aren't you leaving this poor family? Are you just going to stay in the clinic and bring bad luck upon yourselves?"
The little boy stepped forward and started yelling and cursing at the family.
Their clinic has clearly marked prices for medical treatment. How can you come in if you don't have money? They have no shame!
Poor people should go to poor people's clinics, not come to big clinics like this.
"How much does it cost to see a doctor at your clinic? Fifty taels is enough?"
Lin Yuesha opened her purse, letting the boy see the silver inside.
"You're rich?"
The young boy glanced at it, his attitude softening slightly. He said, "Wait a moment, I'll go find the doctor."
About fifteen minutes later, the doctor finally arrived, following behind the young boy.
"This little girl's medical treatment will cost at least fifty taels of silver."
When the doctor arrives, he first mentions the cost of the consultation. If the cost is acceptable, he will see the patient; otherwise, he will leave without expecting anything in return.
This was the first time Lin Yuesha had ever seen such a strange place. Even modern hospitals didn't have such rules.
"What illness does she have? Can fifty taels of silver cure it?"
If money can solve a problem, then it's not a problem.
Lin Yuesha didn't trust the doctors here. They were all about money and their every word revolved around silver. Did these doctors have any medical ethics?
"Are you a doctor or am I? If you don't want to see me, fine. If you're unwilling to spend the money, go home and wait to die."
The doctor summoned by the boy was very sharp-tongued and said shamelessly, "If we at Jishetang can't cure a patient in the prefectural city, they're going to die anyway."
"Anyway, you should think it through. If this little girl leaves Jishetang, her life will be in danger."
This statement could be considered a vicious curse.
Lin Yuesha originally didn't want to take it seriously. Going to a clinic for treatment is a business transaction, and it's all voluntary, not a forced sale.
To refuse this deal and be cursed to die immediately is too vicious.
"What if she doesn't die, and can recover?"
Lin Yuesha had already decided where to go. She stood up and said coldly.
"Miss, I'm sorry, but Da Niu'er is just unlucky. Even if she stays at Jishetang, she might not be able to recover."
Liu Quan, a seven-foot-tall man, had red eyes; he couldn't let the young lady be humiliated along with him.
"It's alright."
Lin Yuesha's face was cold. Despite her young age, she spoke with great authority, directly pressing the doctor, "Since you say that, you have to take responsibility for your words. Are you willing to make a bet?"
"What are we betting on?"
The doctor was also furious. He thought, "You poor wretch who can't afford medical treatment deserves to die. Why bother arguing with him!"
That little girl was born with a weak constitution and had a high fever, so she was already delirious. Even if he took over, he wasn't entirely confident.
"Two hundred taels of silver."
Jishetang loves money, so let's gamble with their lifeblood, their silver.
Two hundred taels was the price Lin Yuesha could afford; any more, and she would have to sell her jewelry.
"What arrogance!"
The doctor was about to leave when he heard that Lin Yuesha had asked for two hundred taels of silver. He got angry and shouted, "Let's gamble! Who's afraid of who!"
He could come up with two hundred taels, but it was hard to say about the little girl in front of him.
My family lives in a house not far from the prefectural government office. If I can't pay, I'll give you the house as payment for the debt. We'll sign and seal the agreement.
Lin Yuesha was fearless; she wouldn't tolerate such a vile person! If she didn't want to delay Da Niu'er's treatment, she would have had a good argument with the doctor.
What kind of Jishetang is this? A bunch of scum!
"Fine, if I don't have a house and not enough money, I'll sell you to be my maid."
The doctor's surname was Qin, and he was the lowest-ranking doctor at Jishetang. He didn't think Da Niu'er could still be alive, so in order not to take advantage of Lin Yuesha, he took the initiative to change the document.
"Little girl, don't say I'm bullying you. If you lose, give me two hundred taels and we'll call it even. If I lose, and that sickly fellow survives and recovers, I'm willing to give you four hundred taels of silver as compensation. How about it?"
Four hundred units, doubled.
Very good, Lin Yuesha was very satisfied. She nodded, signed and sealed the document, and each person had a copy. If anyone reneged on the debt, they could go to the prefectural government office to file a complaint.
"Don't worry, I've been working at Jishetang for more than just a year or two, so I have a good reputation."
Qin Langzhong gave his assurance, but he had one condition.
His main concern was that Da Niu'er had a twin sister, and if they switched, he would definitely suffer a huge loss. Therefore, he wanted to send someone to follow her.
This was Qin Langzhong's cunning.
"No problem, it's my duty."
Lin Yuesha agreed, and Qin Langzhong sent a errand boy from Jishetang, Qin San, his nephew, to accompany him.
After the bet was over, Lin Yuesha and her group were kicked out of the house.
“Miss, you’ve only just arrived in the city, what connections could you possibly have?”
Bai Cha was more inclined to side with Lin Yuesha, believing that her young mistress was too righteous and therefore acted impulsively. However, as a servant, she couldn't say anything at this crucial moment and could only worry inwardly.
"Bai Cha, how could you forget? We're going to find Doctor Yan."
Lin Yuesha reminded Bai Cha that after the two were injured by the carriage, it was Bai Youran who took them to the clinic.
Surely the daughter of a prefect could afford to go to Jishetang? Yet, she chose an inconspicuous little clinic in a corner and held Dr. Yan in high esteem.
Lin Yuesha had no connections, but Bai Youran did; at worst, she could just swallow her pride and go to her door to ask for help.
"yes!"
Bai Cha suddenly realized something and felt a great sense of hope.
The group headed straight for the small clinic where Dr. Yan worked, but the shop had already closed and the doors were boarded up.
Treating the sick and saving lives cannot be delayed. Lin Yuesha gave Bai Cha a wink, and the two of them stepped forward together, banging on the door panel loudly.
"Doctor Yan, is Doctor Yan here? Help!"
While banging on the door, Lin Yuesha cried for help.
Liu Quan joined in banging on the door; the three of them were quite strong, and the door was almost shattered.
Fifteen minutes later, Dr. Yan appeared in everyone's sight with her messy hair and dark circles under her eyes, and angrily said, "What are you all yelling about in the middle of the night!"
