Chapter 39 Self-Confession
Regarding the time Chen Dahua left, the Ma family's accounts were consistent, with no discrepancies. Jin stated with certainty that Chen Dahua left empty-handed, without any belongings.
How could she possibly take it? Jin was afraid that Chen Dahua would steal the Ma family's things, so she kept a close watch on her.
The official looked grave, unsure where to begin his investigation.
"Also, that day when I went out with Chen, I saw Ma Laowu."
Jin ran out to close the courtyard gate. It was almost dark by then. She glanced at the scene from afar and saw that Chen Dahua was running out crying. She ran into Ma Laowu, and the two of them were together, talking about something.
The house was in complete chaos. Jin didn't even have time to watch the commotion. As soon as Chen Dahua left, all the chores in the kitchen fell to her. Liniang treated her like a servant, making her boil water.
"The murderer is Ma Laowu!"
According to Ma Laosan's judgment, Ma Laowu must have taken a liking to Chen Dahua and tried to force himself on her. When Chen Dahua refused, he killed her.
How did you know?
The officer grasped the key point, staring at Ma Laowu with eyes like searchlights, narrowed his eyes, and asked in a low voice.
From the moment they entered until now, all they've said is that Chen Dahua is dead, at most revealing that she was murdered, but they haven't said anything else.
In his desperation, Ma Laosan shifted the blame directly to Ma Laowu, even describing the scene in a very accurate manner, which is likely not a coincidence.
"Could it be that you killed the Chen family?"
The officers were about to step forward to arrest Ma Laosan and take him away.
Now the Ma family panicked. Ma Youde knelt down with a thud, kowtowing repeatedly to the officials and crying out that he was innocent, "Third brother is just talking nonsense! He doesn't know anything!"
"I don't think so."
The official smirked. The Ma family was a bunch of cowards who bullied the weak and feared the strong. If all else failed, they could all be thrown into jail and tortured until they got something out of them. These people just wouldn't shed a tear until they saw the coffin.
But before that, they had to meet with Ma Laowu and hear what he had to say.
Jin led the way and called Ma Laowu over from his home.
Ma Laowu was very tall with a square face and looked upright, far superior to the sleazy Ma Laosan.
Lin Yuesha thought, if her older cousin married a man like Ma Laowu, she would definitely live a good life, right?
Sometimes, however, fate intervenes, forcing us to bow to destiny.
"What exactly happened to Ms. Chen?"
On the way back to Ma Laowu's house, Jin had already revealed the gist of the matter. When Ma Laowu heard that Chen Dahua had been murdered, he was incredulous. He entered the house with his back bent and never straightened up again.
Upon closer inspection, Lin Yuesha saw that Ma Laowu's eyes were red, his lips were tightly pursed, his hands were clenched into fists, and the veins on the back of his hands were bulging.
"Old Ma, did you run into the Chen family just after dark the day before yesterday?"
To save time, the officer asked the questions directly.
Ma Laowu's lips trembled, and it took him a long time to finally say, "Yes."
Did she say anything to you?
The officer continued to ask.
"She only said she was going back to her parents' home for a few days. I saw her crying, so I guess she was wronged again at the Ma family."
Ma Laowu put a lot of effort into every word he uttered.
He didn't know what to do. He admitted that the reason he hadn't arranged a marriage yet was because he couldn't forget Chen Dahua. Unfortunately, he was too late; Chen Dahua had married his cousin and become his sister-in-law.
"Officer, how did Big Flower die?"
Ma Laowu took a deep breath and asked, feigning composure.
"You and Chen Dahua only exchanged a few words before breaking up?"
Ma Laosan curled his lip; he didn't believe it at all. A lone man and a lone woman—wasn't this the perfect opportunity for them to get along? Knowing Ma Laowu's character, he might even want to send Chen Dahua back to Chenjia Village.
