Chapter 6 Looking in the mirror doesn't mean you can't eat your fill.
After breakfast, the snowstorm subsided, and the sun came out. The winter sun felt warm on my skin, without any scorching heat.
Lin Yuesha sat on a small stool in the yard, basking in the sun, lost in thought.
"Oh, little girl's home!"
An old woman was standing at the entrance. She called out to Lin Xiaoya when she saw her.
Lin Yuesha raised her eyelids, not really wanting to talk to her. This person was Wang Po, the village's number one gossip and opportunist. It was Wang Po who spread the rumor that Chen was a jinx to her husband.
If it weren't for her own reputation, Lin Yuesha would have liked to grab a big stick and kick the person out.
When a weasel visits a chicken to wish it a Happy New Year, nothing good ever comes from when Granny Wang comes to the house.
"Grandma Wang, my name isn't Xiaoya. My father named me Lin Yuesha."
Lin Yuesha argued that this was her name in her previous life, and she would not change it.
In the village, names like "Little Girl," "Big Girl," "Big Girl," and "Zhaodi" were common, and almost all the girls were given names arbitrarily.
"Lin Yue what?"
Granny Wang had some hearing problems and didn't hear clearly.
"Lin Yuesha".
Lin Yuesha pronounced her words very clearly.
"Lin Yue what?"
"Moonlight Veil".
This was repeated several times.
"Lin Yue is stupid? Getting stupider and stupider?"
Granny Wang smacked her lips and wondered, "How come there's someone with that name?"
Lin Yuesha was furious and wanted to kick the person out even more.
Just as she was preparing to put her plan into action, her older brother, Xiao Qi, happened to come out of the room. He saw his younger sister holding a stick of firewood and couldn't help but twitch his eye.
"Aunt Wang, what brings you here?"
Xiao Qi always had a smile on his face, making him look exceptionally honest and kind. His originally outstanding features became somewhat simple and unassuming, and he looked rather naive and easy to bully.
"That's right!"
Granny Wang glanced at Lin Yuesha and muttered under her breath, "This little girl will get married sooner or later, what should we name her!"
Her granddaughter, Zhaodi, is about the same age as Lin Xiaoya. She's very capable, good at both farming and working in the fields! That way, she'll be able to marry into a good family in the future.
On the other hand, Lin Xiaoya can't do anything. What's the use of being pretty? Looking in the mirror won't fill her stomach!
"My sister's name was given by my father. It's called 'Smoke Envelops Cold Water, Moon Envelops Sand,' but with one character changed."
Although Granny Wang couldn't understand, Xiao Qi patiently explained it to her.
Now, Granny Wang beamed with joy and praised, "You scholars are truly learned! No wonder you can come up with such a beautiful name!"
Lin Yuesha: "..."
Xiao Qi glanced at his younger sister out of the corner of his eye and saw that she was staring at him with a very vivid expression. He slightly curled his lips, but ignored her and focused on dealing with Granny Wang.
"Aunt Wang, you've come here because you need something, haven't you?"
Xiao Qi guessed roughly what was going on.
Wang Pozi's house was right at the village entrance. He happened to pass by on his way home, and when Wang Pozi saw the red paper in his hand, she figured he was probably there for the Spring Festival couplets.
The sun shines brightly on every door and window, and people replace the old peachwood charms with new ones.
In the north, the Lunar New Year is just around the corner once the twelfth lunar month arrives. As the year draws to a close, people begin storing New Year's goods well in advance, and bright red Spring Festival couplets are an essential part of the celebration.
Xiao Qi was the only scholar in the village, so it was inevitable that people would come to him seeking favors.
"Yes, young master Xiao, you are a scholar and have beautiful handwriting. How about you write a couplet for my family?"
Granny Wang hurried along, having already seen that the scholar surnamed Xiao had brought a lot of red paper, more than she could possibly use. She was sure that by arriving early, she could obtain some, thus saving herself a dozen or so coins.
A dozen or so coins is no small amount; it can buy a few ounces of meat for my grandson and make big meat buns!
Granny Wang blinked her cloudy little eyes and stared intently at Xiao Qi as she spoke.
