Chapter 69 Eavesdropping
He Xing took a few steps and saw a figure in the open area, busy with something. He looked closely and recognized her as Lin Yuesha, whom he had seen before.
"Young Master He?"
Jiang Baozhu's small kitchen was not very big. In order to make a batch of spiced melon seeds and roasted peanuts as soon as possible, the Jiang family had given a large room in the main kitchen to Lin Yuesha.
To ensure quality, Lin Yuesha took the initiative to take over the work, using a sieve to remove the shriveled melon seeds.
"It really is you."
He Xing smiled, squatted down, and took the initiative to approach Lin Yuesha, asking, "There are servants in the manor, so why are you doing the work?"
"I've come to your residence, so it's not right for me to eat and stay for free."
Lin Yuesha spoke vaguely, wondering what He Xing's intentions were. Instead of going to find Jiang Baozhu, he was wandering around aimlessly; he must have misunderstood something, just like Jiang Huai and Xu Shi.
Lin Yuesha didn't expose him, content to watch He Xing make a fool of himself. In any case, she couldn't see any affection this guy had for Baozhu; it was all a scheme, all for the Jiang family's wealth.
"Lin Daiyu, you are so diligent."
He Xing still felt the pain in his heart when he thought about the few taels of silver he had spent. He had just been thinking about cultivating Xiao Xi as his informant, but after seeing Lin Yuesha, he changed his mind.
Xiao Xi was a servant in the Jiang family and would never have the opportunity to go out and deliver a message to him, but Lin Yuesha was different.
Besides, by coaxing Lin Yuesha and gaining the girl's trust, he could obtain information about the Jiang family and also find an opportunity to sell her out—killing two birds with one stone!
He Xing had inquired and learned that the beginning of the year was the birthday of a noble person, and on that birthday, a group of people would present gifts. If he wanted to climb the social ladder, he would have to give Lin Yuesha to the noble person for his pleasure.
Well, raising pigs for slaughter is a process that can't be done without spending a penny; they still need to be fed pig feed.
"Young Master He, why don't you go see Miss Baozhu?"
Lin Yuesha felt a chill run down her spine as she felt a venomous gaze fixed on her. She really didn't want to have any contact with He Xing and felt a strong aversion to him.
"Sister Lin, this is for you."
With a heavy heart, He Xing took out a silver butterfly hairpin that he had originally intended to give to Jiang Baozhu and stuffed it into Lin Yuesha's hand.
Lin Yuesha looked down at the object in her hand and was immediately stunned.
The butterfly is depicted with remarkable lifelikeness. What's even more special is that the eyes of the silver hairpin are inlaid with two small red gemstones, making it clear that it's definitely not something that can be bought for two taels of silver.
"Oh, I can't possibly accept this!"
Lin Yuesha flinched, a blush rising to her cheeks.
Upon seeing this, He Xing felt even more contemptuous. Tsk tsk, this little girl is so easily swayed. Last time, she was almost overjoyed to death over a silver hairpin worth two taels of silver. This hairpin was something he won in a bet with his classmate, and it was worth ten taels of silver.
Judging from the little girl's shy expression, flushed face, and watery eyes, she must have misunderstood something. Could she be thinking he's taken a liking to this blond-haired girl?
Lin Yuesha noticed He Xing's expression and almost wanted to curse. She really wanted to say, "You're blushing even when you're holding your breath!"
Right now, to feign shyness, Lin Yuesha is going all out again! Since her acting skills aren't up to par and she can't get into character well, she has to resort to some tricks.
"The lotus hairpin I bought from the peddler last time was a bit old-fashioned and not suitable for a delicate young girl like you. The butterfly one is just right."
He Xing's sweet words left Lin Yuesha with no choice but to continue holding her breath and pretending to be shy. She rubbed her stiff face, too lazy to continue the act.
"But Miss Baozhu also likes butterflies, doesn't she?"
No, I'm going to roll my eyes if I hold it in any longer. Lin Yuesha lowered her head, trying her best to hide the disgust in her eyes.
"It's alright."
He Xing sighed and said dejectedly, "I'm usually busy with my studies and often neglect Baozhu. I wonder if she has any complaints about me."
"I have a problem with that, of course I have a problem with that. My problem is that you should never come to the Jiang residence again and get out of her sight!"
Lin Yuesha kept these words in her heart and nodded slightly.
"So that's how it is. So, the new study at home is because you want me to come to your residence so that I can keep Baozhu company?"
A glimmer of hope appeared in He Xing's eyes. Yes, perhaps it was a surprise from Jiang Huai, not necessarily prepared for Zhang Jing.
"This...I, I don't know."
Lin Yuesha took the silver hairpin, but it was so hot that she accidentally dropped it on the ground. She hurriedly picked it up, wiped it with the hem of her dress, and intended to return it to He Xing.
Feeling guilty? This little girl must know something!
He Xing was resolute, but then calmed down. He pushed the silver hairpin to Lin Yuesha and said with a smile, "Sister Lin, this is a gift for you. Even if you return it, I can only throw it away."
Having said all that, Lin Yuesha reluctantly accepted, awaiting He Xing's next words.
After waiting a while, and Lin Yuesha didn't bring it up herself, He Xing couldn't help but sigh softly, "Actually, there's something I'd like to ask Sister Lin for help with."
The fox's tail is finally about to be revealed!
Lin Yuesha blinked and said sincerely, "Young Master He, I accepted your gift without being polite, so you don't need to be polite with me either. I will do whatever I can."
Even if you can't do it, you have to pretend you can. Lin Yuesha touched the silver hairpin and realized that she was becoming somewhat addicted to tricking He Xing.
Just by talking, money flows through your hands; this is much faster than making money by selling food!
However, this is not the right path, Lin Yuesha reminded herself, lest she go astray.
“After my father died, my family went through a lot of hardship. It was all thanks to Uncle Jiang’s help that I was able to study and pass the imperial examination to become a scholar.”
He Xing spoke these words with gratitude in his voice, "I often visit your home, not only to thank Uncle Jiang, but also for other reasons."
He Xing looked intently at Lin Yuesha, hoping she would continue the conversation.
