Chapter 924 Madam Xu teaches her son
Lin Yuesha suppressed the urge to hit him and tried to reason with Xu Da. Although most men in this era were chauvinistic and looked down on women, since Xu Da was Lin Yuesha's family, she wanted to change him a little and straighten him out.
"Cousin, are you saying that Qi Heng did nothing wrong, and that I'm the one throwing a tantrum because I don't understand him?"
Lin Yuesha stood up, her face calm. She saw Madam Xu standing at the door and thought that Madam Xu's arrival was just in time.
“I didn’t say that.”
Xu Da was puzzled. From Qi Heng's perspective, Qi Heng meant well and did nothing wrong. From Lin Yuesha's perspective, it seemed that her cousin's tantrum after being deceived was somewhat justified.
Xu Da couldn't afford to offend either Qi Heng or his cousin. What was he doing meddling in things that only made the situation worse?
Faced with this difficult decision, Xu Da decided to say a few words for Qi Heng, "Cousin, husband and wife should speak openly about what they have to say. You've been ignoring him these past few days, and he's probably feeling quite uncomfortable about it."
Lin Yuesha rolled her eyes. Xu Da knew exactly how she and Qi Heng got married. It was all to fulfill the wishes of the Prince of Luo, but now she was stuck with him.
Qi Heng deceived her, and she didn't forgive him; instead, she was being petty.
“Cousin, Qi Heng has been really good to you. If this were Wu Ya, I wouldn’t even bother explaining to her. It’s good if she understands, but there’s nothing I can do if she doesn’t. I won’t tolerate her womanly ways. She’s all talk and no action. If she gets on my nerves and throws tantrums at me all the time, will I have to keep coaxing her?”
Xu Da argued vehemently, "I married a wife, not a great-grandmother."
After Xu Da finished speaking, Lin Yuesha felt something was wrong, because Madam Xu's face at the door was getting increasingly ugly, and finally she couldn't hold back anymore.
Madam Xu looked around, then spotted the feather duster in the corner. She quickly picked it up and angrily said, "You little brat, you think you're all grown up now? Who do you think is a proper woman who doesn't tolerate your bad habits?"
If it weren't for hearing Xu Da's comments behind his back, Madam Xu would have always thought that her son was only delaying his marriage because he was focused on making a name for himself. After she arranged a blind date, the young ladies in the capital cried when they saw Xu Da, and Madam Xu thought that the young ladies were blind and didn't like her son.
Only now has Mrs. Xu found the crux of the problem.
What kind of bullshit attitude is Xu Da? With such remarks, how could he possibly find a wife? He'll be a bachelor for life!
"Mother, what are you doing?"
Xu Da was spouting nonsense, getting really into it, when he suddenly felt a chilling wind all around him. His instincts kicked in, and he quickly dodged Madam Xu's feather duster attack.
"Mother, a gentleman uses words, not fists. What have I done wrong? I'm innocent!"
Xu Da, with a long face, tried to hide in all directions. He saw Lin Yuesha watching the commotion and, without any backbone, tried to hide behind his cousin.
Unexpectedly, Lin Yuesha saw through his thoughts even faster, closed the door, and ran into the inner room.
My cousin really betrayed me when it mattered most!
Chickens flew and dogs barked in the side hall, feathers scattered everywhere. Madam Xu brandished a feather duster like a large knife, displaying fierce power. Xu Da couldn't retaliate and was beaten several times.
"Mother, please let me explain."
Xu Da's face turned red. He was already in his mid-twenties, and his mother still specifically targeted his buttocks for spanking. How embarrassing!
"Explain? Would you explain to a woman with long hair and short brains? If she can understand, she can; if she can't, there's nothing I can do."
Madam Xu retorted using Xu Da's words, "Once the military affairs are settled, I will go to Wucheng to apologize and ask the old city lord to dissolve the engagement."
Madam Xu was furious, panting heavily, "Don't you look down on women? I won't force you to marry a woman. You can go to Wenjun Tower if you want. How can a woman be worthy of you? You think you can soar to the sky!"
Madam Xu didn't care about other people's situations; that was the Xu family's tradition—women had a higher status than men.
After marrying a wife, having children, and managing the household, how can one bear being looked down upon?
Madam Xu was a woman, and she understood very well that for a woman to be respected, she had to put in many times more effort than a man.
Indeed, that's how the world is; the preference for sons over daughters is widespread, and Madam Xu couldn't stop it. However, the Xu family doesn't follow that rule.
"If I hadn't given birth to you, you might be a wandering ghost now, with no right to be reincarnated as a human."
Madam Xu felt much better after giving Xu Da a good scolding.
Lin Yuesha stood in the inner room and hurriedly came out to greet Madam Xu. There was a big age difference between her and Madam Xu, and Madam Xu treated her like a junior. Otherwise, the two of them would be better off as sisters.
"Cousin, why don't you admit your mistake right now!"
Lin Yuesha looked at Xu Da with loving eyes. With Madam Xu watching over him, Xu Da's lineage wouldn't go astray.
"Mother, I was wrong."
Xu Da gave a wry smile. He really wanted to make a comparison with Qi Heng and use himself to highlight Qi Heng, but he was caught red-handed by his mother. It was too difficult.
“Uya is still recovering from her injuries. I sent someone over to deliver New Year’s gifts. When that girl found out you became the commander-in-chief, she told you not to worry about her, that she’s fine.”
Madam Xu grabbed Xu Da's ear and said, "Look at Wu Ya, and then look at you. If I could have given birth to a daughter, I wouldn't have to worry so much!"
Xu Da had finally gotten engaged, and Madam Xu was genuinely worried that her future daughter-in-law would be scared away by Xu Da's words before even entering the family.
"Mother, you worry just as much as you do about your daughter."
Xu Da poured himself a glass of water and winked at Lin Yuesha, signaling his cousin to say a few good words for him.
"Yes, Auntie, it's the same feeling a mother has. You see, my mother is in Cangzhou, and I'm in the Northwest. My mother is always worried about me."
Lin Yuesha went around behind Madam Xu and gave her a massage, her hand pressure was just right.
"Good boy."
Madam Xu squeezed Lin Yuesha's hand and said, "Qi Heng is a good man, devoted to you. As someone who has been through it all, I know how difficult it is to find someone like him."
After giving Xu Da a beating, Madam Xu began to persuade him again.
It took Lin Yuesha a while to realize that Madam Xu was Qi Heng's intermediary.
As soon as Madam Xu left, Xiao Qiuyue arrived.
"Young Master Qiuyue, have you finished writing the story of the female general?"
Lin Yuesha kept thinking about the second half of the play; this scene brought tears to her eyes.
"Still a little short."
Xiao Qiuyue took out another booklet, which contained another new play he had written.
"Another new show?"
Lin Yuesha opened it, but couldn't continue reading after only a few pages.
The woman was six months pregnant. Her husband was an alcoholic who robbed the family of all their money. The woman thought about how her unborn child didn't even have a soft little coat yet, so she tried to persuade her husband with all her heart. As a result, she was beaten so badly that she suffered a postpartum hemorrhage and almost died along with her unborn child.
The woman barely survived after losing her child and recuperating. Her husband complained that she was a jinx, without realizing he had done anything wrong.
