Pei Sui returned at eleven o'clock and saw her watching TV. He went over and asked, "Why aren't you asleep yet?"
"Wait for you."
Meng Sheng turned her head to look at him, "I have something to tell you."
Seeing her serious expression, Pei Sui asked, "What's wrong?"
Meng Sheng didn't keep them in suspense and concisely explained how she and Gu Ci had made a video deal and how she had learned from Chen Ye over the phone that Cheng Jie had run away.
Upon hearing this, Pei Sui frowned and pondered for a moment, "Where's the video Gu Ci gave you? Let me see it."
Meng Sheng immediately found the video and handed the phone to him.
Pei Sui watched the video carefully, and doubts began to arise in his heart.
How did Gu Ci get this surveillance video?
Suddenly, he remembered the guess that Meng Sheng had told him before.
Rebirth?
He frowned. The idea was far-fetched, but not impossible; after all, the text message that predicted the future was also quite far-fetched.
He put down his phone, no longer dwelling on those matters, but keeping this matter in mind. He held Meng Sheng's hand to comfort her, "Don't worry, wait for news from Chen Ye. He will definitely go to find Gu Ci, and Cheng Jie won't escape either."
Meng Sheng nodded. "Yes, I know."
After she spoke out about what was weighing on her mind, she felt a little more at ease and less depressed and upset.
She wasn't actually that worried about Gu Ci and Cheng Jie.
Pei Sui touched her face. "You go to sleep first. I'll take a shower and come right away."
"good."
Twenty minutes later, Pei Sui came out of the bathroom, still damp from the water, and turned off the main light in the room. Meng Sheng was already drowsy, and as soon as the blanket was pulled back, she turned over and hugged his waist.
Pei Sui kissed her forehead, hugged her, whispered "goodnight" in her ear, and fell into a deep sleep with her.
*
The next morning, before dawn, the Pei family was once again in a flurry of activity.
Meng Sheng went to the mourning hall again to offer three incense sticks to Cui Xueheng, and then, with the chanting of scriptures from the monks, he helped Cui Xueheng onto the hearse.
Apart from the old lady, the rest of the Pei family went to the funeral home and crematorium. Meng Sheng also stayed at the Pei family home because it was not appropriate for her to go with them.
On the way back to the fourth courtyard, Gu Ci trailed behind them at a distance, not too close, and didn't have much of a presence. But even the servants of the Pei residence had seen the news report yesterday afternoon. With the news spreading like wildfire, Gu Ci had become the subject of everyone's attention.
No one was willing to give her a kind look.
Previously, she was only treated as an ordinary guest at the Pei family, but after last night, it was clear that today's breakfast was somewhat perfunctory.
She has many dietary restrictions, including three things she can't eat for breakfast this morning. She asked someone about it, and the maid seemed to be okay, but every word she said was perfunctory. The implication was that she should stop causing trouble and not think she was a member of the Pei family.
At the fork in the road between Zhishui Residence and Miting Courtyard, the old lady looked at Meng Sheng and said in a kind voice, "Sheng Sheng, you got up so early this morning, you must be tired. You can go back and sleep for a while. Asui and the others probably won't be back until the afternoon. You can come to Grandma's courtyard for lunch."
Meng Sheng glanced at the graceful figure slowly following behind, and nodded slightly, "Okay."
She didn't linger and went straight into the courtyard of Zhishui Residence.
Gu Ci watched her swaggering figure as if she were returning home, her heart skipped a beat, something in her chest was rapidly taking shape, squeezing out those surging emotions, as if it would break free of its cage at any moment.
But seeing the old lady still standing not far away without moving, she forcibly suppressed these things.
She clenched her fists, walked over, and called out, "Grandma."
The old lady glanced at her, still with her usual kind and gentle expression, and nodded with a smile, "Let's go."
Gu Ci was stunned. Was the old woman waiting for her just now because she hadn't moved?
She quickly followed, a gentle and sweet smile on her face. "Thank you for waiting for me, Grandma."
The old lady gave a slight smile, but said nothing.
When they reached the fork in the road between the main hall and her current room, she was about to say something when the old lady spoke first.
"A-Ci, come inside and sit down. Grandma would like to have a chat with you."
Gu Ci paused again. "Let's talk?"
For some reason, she had a bad feeling.
The video incident caused such a stir online yesterday that the Pei family all know about it, and she's sure the old lady knows about it too.
So, what does this old hag want to say to me?
Meeting the old lady's cloudy yet loving gaze, Gu Ci hesitated for a moment, but her sweet and obedient smile remained unchanged. "Okay."
As she spoke, she affectionately took the old lady's arm, just like a granddaughter.
The old lady didn't brush her off, and led her into the room where she usually copied scriptures and chanted Buddhist prayers.
The air was filled with a pleasant scent of sandalwood, and on the table lay a Buddhist scripture that an old woman had not finished copying.
Gu Ci was not unfamiliar with this place. She had come to the old lady's small Buddhist hall before when she was still Pei Sui's fiancée, to accompany her in meditation, chanting and copying scriptures.
"grandmother……"
Gu Ci sat down on the futon, preparing to brew tea for the old lady, and was about to ask her what kind of tea she wanted.
Before the conversation could even begin, the old lady's gentle, aged voice rang out first, "A-Ci, you should go back to the Gu family home this morning."
Gu Ci froze, her hand holding the kettle awkwardly hanging in the air, unable to retract it or continue brewing tea.
She stared at the old woman blankly and in astonishment, her lips moved, and after a long while, she finally found her voice, "Grandma, you..."
What does this mean?
Meng Sheng was unaware of the conversation between the old lady and Gu Ci. She had gone to bed late the night before and woke up at four in the morning. She was a little sleepy and took a nap after returning to her room.
Just as she drifted off to sleep, her phone, which was next to her pillow, suddenly buzzed, and the vibration immediately brought her back to reality.
She paused for a moment, then groggily picked up her phone and saw it was a text message.
And it was a text message sent from that mysterious number.
She instantly snapped out of her daze, opened her eyes wide, swiped the screen saver upwards, and entered the text message page, where a line of text clearly appeared before her eyes.
[Danger! Gu Ci already harbors resentment towards Old Madam Pei. After the old lady suggests leaving the Pei family and exposes her shortcomings, Gu Ci will become enraged and push the old lady, causing her to suffer a stroke and irreversible damage, leading to her death three months later. Quick! Stop Gu Ci now!]
Meng Sheng was taken aback.
Cerebral infarction?
He passed away three months later?!
She caught those two keywords at a glance, and without thinking twice, she slipped on her slippers and rushed straight to the Miting Courtyard in the west.
