Chapter 13 Taking Charge

Xu Yan glanced at it briefly and nodded.

Everyone else was surprised to see what Yang Dongmei was holding in her arms.

"My goodness, these are the things that were stolen from Little Xu, the educated youth?"

"Oh my, I've never seen anything so good in my life!" Granny Zhang exclaimed dramatically.

"Hey, I see you even have scented soap? I wanted to give it as part of my daughter's dowry when she got married, but I couldn't find it at the supply and marketing cooperative in the city. The salesperson there said it was a rare item. I've never seen this kind of pastry before."

A woman who looked to be in her early forties reached into the package and rummaged through it, saying with some surprise.

"Hey, Sister-in-law Wang, what kind of things don't you recognize, even though you're always running around to the supply and marketing cooperative in the city?"

The woman referred to as Sister-in-law Wang is named Wang Guilan. Her husband's surname is Zhao, and he is a carpenter. They have four children: two sons and two daughters. Their daughters got married a couple of years ago. One son drives a truck in the city, and the other son just bought a job this year at a machinery factory.

They are all top-notch jobs.

Neither of her two sons are married yet, and all the money they earn is in Wang Guilan's hands, making them the wealthiest family in the village.

Every family in the village with a daughter preferred their family, but Wang Guilan had high standards. She felt that her son had a job and was good-looking, and only girls from the city were good enough for him.

Because she had money, she frequently visited the supply and marketing cooperative. She knew exactly what the village supply and marketing cooperative had and didn't have, and she also had a good grasp of what the city supply and marketing cooperative had.

Seeing how much she loved the two bars of soap, Xu Yan had a sudden thought and made a plan, but now was not the time to speak up; he could only do it later.

Hearing her words, the others also moved closer, but instead of looking at the soap, they stared intently at the pastries wrapped in oil paper and red ribbon in front of them.

Hmm, it looks expensive.

Mmm, it smells good too.

You can smell the fragrance even through the oil paper.

Even though Song Guangming had a son in the army who would send money and tickets home from time to time, he still stared wide-eyed at this moment.

"These……"

Everyone stared in disbelief.

"These all belong to Xiao Xu, the educated youth?" Liu Mancang finally found his voice after a long while.

Xie Zhuo was also surprised.

I never would have guessed that the skinny, emaciated female educated youth who almost drowned in the village was actually the richest person in the entire village.

"Hey, Third Brother," Liu Mancang tilted his head towards Xie Zhuo, "your sudden urge to stand up for her, it can't be because of......"

Is it for these things that Xiao Xu, the educated youth, has?

"Get lost," Xie Zhuo kicked him in the leg, glancing at him sideways. "Is that what you think of me?"

“Yes,” Liu Mancang answered without hesitation.

Xie Zhuo: "..."

"Get out!"

"My goodness, if we calculate it this way, how much stuff did they take away from Xiao Xu, the educated youth, in the past six months? I saw Han and the others going to the commune to get things, such big packages, carrying them back one by one."

Li Aihua spoke while gesturing with her hands.

“You’re talking nonsense,” Wu Shi couldn’t help but curse. “There weren’t this many before, just some peach shortbread or something.”

“Oh, so you admit that you ate Xiao Xu’s food,” Li Aihua immediately countered.

"I, I..." Wu Shi's face turned bright red.

“Anyway, it was Xu Yan who gave it to us,” he repeated what he had said before.

"Damn it, so much food, and people are still starving like this, it's a sin!" Li Aihua yelled again, startling Xu Yan, who was standing to the side unprepared.

"Captain, you must stand up for young Xu, the educated youth!"

"Let alone the food, the money and tickets alone are not a small amount. How are they any different from robbers?"

With so many people, everyone wanted to express their opinion and seek justice for the poor educated youth, Xiao Xu. Song Guangming's head was practically about to explode from all the noise.

"That's enough!" he roared in a deep voice.

The crowd finally quieted down.

"Little Xu, what do you plan to do?" Song Guangming asked Xu Yan.

“I… I want all my things back,” Xu Yan stammered. “After all, these were sent to me by my parents through their own hard work and saving. It wasn’t easy for them to collect these things.”

Song Guangming nodded, his impression of Xu Yan improving somewhat.

He's a good child, still remembering how hard his parents worked, unlike some people who, no matter how much they eat, never appreciate it.

Especially the educated youth who married into their family.

“Alright, I’ll take charge for you today,” Song Guangming said, then looked at the other people at the educated youth settlement. “Originally, I allowed you to solve your own problems, but now it’s clear that you can’t solve them, so I’ll have to take care of it.”

"Han Xiaoyu," Song Guangming called out to Han Xiaoyu.

The gloom on the male educated youth's face vanished the moment he looked up. Although his face remained expressionless, his attitude improved considerably. "Captain, please speak."

“It’s a good thing that you helped Xiao Xu, the educated youth, to get his things from the commune,” Song Guangming said, looking at him. “But it’s wrong to take his things without his consent.”

"During the meeting, I told you again and again not to cause trouble, to help each other, and most importantly, not to fight. Where did you hear what I said? Even deducting work points can't stop you from throwing punches and kicks, is that it?"

“It’s clearly Xie Zhuo—” Wu Shi interjected somewhat indignantly, but before he could finish, Han Xiaoyu stopped him.

Song Guangming's gaze immediately fixed on Wu Shi's face. His face was dark, and he looked extremely serious. "Oh? Putting aside why Xie Zhuo came to the educated youth settlement, just tell me who started it?"
