"Why do you eat everything?" Xu Yan stared at his slightly damp fingertips.
“The bayberry juice is delicious,” Xie Zhuo tilted his head at her.
When Xie Zhuo went out in the middle of the night, Xu Yan had just fallen asleep and was so exhausted from being tossed and turned that she barely had the strength to open her eyes.
Hearing the noise, he still glanced outside the kang (a heated brick bed).
“I went to the city with Mancang and the others to deliver goods,” Xie Zhuo said, after changing his clothes and putting on his shoes. He then came over and kissed Xu Yan on the forehead.
Xu Yan couldn't remember if she had told him to be careful, but when she opened her eyes, it was already broad daylight.
Da Bao and Xiao Bao were writing in the yard when Xiao Shuanzi came over. He leaned over the corner of the table and watched them write for a while, then copied their writing onto his own notebook for a long time.
Xu Yan glanced to her side and saw that Xie Zhuo's quilt was neatly folded and placed under the kang (a heated brick bed), indicating that he was not coming back to sleep there.
I wonder how things went tonight.
Lost in thought, Xu Yan didn't finish getting ready and leave the room until twenty minutes later. Da Bao and Xiao Bao both turned to look at her when they heard the noise.
"Third Auntie is awake," Xiao Bao said as he ran towards Xu Yan.
"You're awake," Xu Yan smiled, inwardly scolding Xie Zhuo a few times. If it weren't for him, would she have gotten up so late?
Since she stopped working in the fields, she hasn't gotten up early at all!
“Third Uncle said we shouldn’t disturb you,” Xiao Bao said, leading her by the hand to the table. “Then my brother and I wrote the words you taught us yesterday.”
"Good boy," Xu Yan said with a smile, pinching his little face. "And what about your third uncle?"
"My third uncle and my dad went to watch the commotion," Xiao Shuanzi interrupted before Xiao Bao could answer. "I heard from my mom that someone in the village was beaten up in the city, and everyone went to watch the commotion."
“I see,” Xu Yan nodded.
“It’s Wang Chao, Uncle Wang,” Xiao Shuanzi said, immediately adding more details when he heard Xu Yan’s interest. “My mom says he needs to be taught a lesson.”
After thinking for a moment, he added, "It seems to be related to my third uncle as well, but I don't know the specifics."
Upon hearing the name Wang Chao, Xu Yan immediately recalled the scene of her and Xie Zhuo going to the city to buy bicycles, and Wang Chao bringing city people to find Xie Zhuo.
Now Wang Chao has been beaten, and they're even saying it's related to Xie Zhuo...
Xu Yan frowned slightly.
"Third Aunt, do you want to go see the excitement?" Xiao Shuanzi asked. "If you want to go, I can take you."
Xu Yan snapped out of her thoughts.
She glanced at Xiao Shuanzi, then laughed, "Dream on. Did your mom bring you to my house? Wouldn't she scold me if I took you there?"
Xiao Shuanzi looked listless.
"You're not that old, why do you love watching the excitement so much?" Xu Yan ruffled his hair. "Focus on your writing. If you don't finish writing these today, don't come home for lunch."
"Sigh!" Little Shuanzi sighed, despite his young age.
Xu Yan was amused by his expression and laughed for a long time.
When Xie Zhuo went to the dilapidated village in the dark last night, Liu Mancang and Zhao Jisheng had already packed the prey into their baskets and were waiting for him to set off.
The three people took turns carrying the three baskets, and it didn't take them long to get to the city.
There were no streetlights in the city at that time, and it was not much better than the countryside. Basically, you couldn't see your hand in front of your face, but Xie Zhuo didn't ask for a flashlight.
Does anyone know if anyone gets up to use the bathroom at this hour?
If I get caught, everything will be ruined.
Fortunately, the people Zhao Yulei had arranged were right at the entrance of the alley, so they didn't have to go in the dark to figure out which storefront it was, which was fine.
After Xie Zhuo finished negotiating with the other party, he took the money and walked back with Liu Mancang and Zhao Jisheng, he finally felt a little more at ease.
Pork prices have been high lately.
One reason is that winter hasn't arrived yet, and pigs haven't been slaughtered in large numbers.
On the other hand, the autumn harvest is approaching, and even the most reluctant families will buy some meat or offal to nourish themselves, so as not to be too tired to work.
The rabbits and pheasants that Xie Zhuo and his group hunted weren't worth much, but the two deer were quite valuable; they sold for a little over a hundred yuan each.
When Liu Mancang received his share of the money, he grinned so hard his teeth were showing. Xie Zhu kicked him in the butt, saying, "Can't you be a little more composed? I'm afraid you'll laugh yourself silly."
"That's forty yuan!" Liu Mancang tried hard to suppress his smile, but couldn't. "With another ten yuan, I could get married."
Upon hearing this, Xie Zhuo pulled out a ten-yuan note from his own hand and slapped it into his hand, saying, "Marry me, marry me the moment it's light in the morning."
Liu Mancang: "...Damn it!"
“Third Brother, I don’t think it’s appropriate,” Zhao Jisheng said from the side.
“You marry her too,” Xie Zhuo said, slapping another ten-yuan bill into Zhao Jisheng’s hand.
“Hey, that’s not what I meant,” Zhao Jisheng immediately wanted to shout, but considering that it was late at night and a shout might not wake up many people, he tried to lower his voice. “I don’t want to get married right now either.”
Xie Zhuo glanced at him.
Zhao Jisheng stuffed the money back into Xie Zhuo's hand, then took out two ten-yuan bills from his own money, saying, "Here, take these too."
Xie Zhuo refused.
Liu Mancang also restrained his excitement and handed Xie Zhuo's money and his own money to Xie Zhuo.
"Third Brother, if it weren't for you, we wouldn't even dare to come to Beishan, let alone go hunting. Logically speaking, you shouldn't have to take the least amount of money."
“That’s right,” Zhao Jisheng said. “We’re both capable, and we know it in our hearts.”
