Chapter 138 An Encounter

Tian Fang never expected that she would be grouped with Xie Zhuo.

After Song Guangming finished dividing the tasks—one involving cutting sunflower heads and the other carrying bags—she and Xie Zhuo were left without partners.

Although Xie Zhuo said that Liu Mancang had gone to the toilet and would be back soon, and that he and Liu Mancang were in the same group, Song Guangming was in a hurry to meet the deadline, so he told them to keep working for now and wait for Liu Mancang to return.

Liu Mancang returned ten minutes later, but since there were no other seats available, he made them work in groups of three.

Anyway, during the autumn harvest, there are no designated areas; everyone's goal is to finish all the work in the fields.

At this point, Song Guangming wouldn't turn a blind eye anymore; he was pacing back and forth in the field with a small notebook in his hand.

If anyone is found slacking off, their work points will be deducted without any mercy, so generally no one dares to slack off at this time.

They were counting on earning more work points this time so they could get grain to get through the winter.

Xie Zhuo didn't have any particular feelings about who he was in a group with. His job was simply to use a sickle to cut off the sunflower heads and then insert them diagonally into the stems. The person behind him carrying the bag only needed to take it down and put it in.

He was tall and quick, so apart from Liu Mancang occasionally darting forward to chat with him, he had almost forgotten about the other person.

When the row in front was almost finished being cut, I turned around and saw Tian Fang, who was keeping her head down and stuffing sunflower heads into sacks.

"Let's use a different bag," Xie Zhuo glanced into the bag, "This one's almost full."

Tian Fang paused, then turned to get the bag.

He didn't look up the entire time.

Xie Zhuo didn't pay much attention and started cutting the other side when Liu Mancang handed him the bag.

“I hadn’t noticed before, but Tian Fang is actually quite tall,” Liu Mancang said.

Xie Zhuo didn't say anything, but his hands moved quickly.

"Do you think what Qian Hu said at the supply and marketing cooperative last time was true?" Liu Mancang asked again.

Xie Zhuo remained silent. When Liu Mancang glanced at Tian Fang again, as if about to say something, Xie Zhuo clicked his tongue impatiently.

Liu Mancang shut up.

Tian Fang felt her heart beating very fast.

From the moment she found out she was in a group with Xie Zhuo, she was terrified that Xie Zhuo and Liu Mancang would hear her heartbeat.

A while ago, for some reason, her mother cursed Xu Yan a few times at home, and then inexplicably muttered a few times that if she had known that Xie Laosan was so rich, marrying her off to Xie Laosan would have been the best thing to do.

Unfortunately, Xu Yan, that pretentious city girl, took the blame for it.

Although Tian Fang herself knew in her heart that even if Xie Zhuo didn't marry Xu Yan, it wouldn't be her turn, she was still more or less influenced by her mother's words.

Seeing Xie Zhuo's gentleness and consideration for Xu Yan, she couldn't help but dream about it.

If only she could marry such a handsome man who dotes on his wife...

Before she was even fully awake, she turned her head and saw Xu Yan standing by the edge of the field, wearing a straw hat and smiling. Tian Fang's heart skipped a beat, and she froze on the spot, unable to move.

However, Xu Yan only glanced at her indifferently before looking at Xie Zhuo.

Xie Zhuo, who was usually quiet and only knew how to work silently in the fields, seemed to light up when he saw Xu Yan.

The next second, she smiled at Xu Yan with the corners of her eyes curving upwards.

"Why are you here?" Xie Zhuo asked with a smile in his voice.

"I've brought you some water," Xu Yan smiled and raised her hand. "Didn't you leave without your water bottle this morning?"

Xie Zhuo raised the corners of his mouth again.

He did it on purpose.

Xu Yan knew he was doing it on purpose.

"Third Uncle, we're here too!" Da Bao and Xiao Bao ran over from not far away. Before Xiao Bao even got there, his view was blocked by the big straw hat. He reached out to cover it for a long time but still couldn't get his eyes out.

In the end, it was Da Bao who helped.

"Third sister-in-law, you're too kind," Liu Mancang said, watching with envy. "Could I have a drink too? I was rushed out the morning and didn't bring any."

“Of course, I brought three jars,” Xu Yan said, taking out the enamel jars wrapped in clean cloth from his basket. He gave one to Xie Zhuo, one to Liu Mancang, and the third…

She glanced at Tian Fang, who had been standing not far away and hadn't come over, and asked with a smile, "Would you like some drinks too?"

Tian Fang was startled again. When she heard Xu Yan's words clearly, she said somewhat stiffly, "I, I don't need it."

Without waiting for Xu Yan to speak again, she turned and walked away in the other direction.

Xie Zhu frowned, and Liu Mancang also felt that Tian Fang's attitude was a bit bad. He said to Xu Yan, "Third sister-in-law, don't mind her. She's a rather strange person."

Xu Yan smiled but didn't reply.

Xie Zhuo slapped Liu Mancang's arm and then snatched the enamel mug from his hand, saying, "You shouldn't drink it either. My wife specially brought it for me."

"Hey!" Liu Mancang shouted as he dodged, "Third Brother, you can't do this! I'm dying of thirst, what's wrong with taking a sip of your water? Is it really that precious?"

When Xu Yan filled their enamel mugs with bayberry juice, Liu Mancang felt he had to take back what he had just said.

What a treasure!

It tastes so good!

Their family's bayberries were all wasted long ago; some were eaten, some were given away, and the last few were fed to the chickens by his mother.

Who would have thought that such sweet bayberry juice could be made!

"Sister-in-law, it's delicious, give me another cup," Liu Mancang said.

After he drank two jugs of liquor, he went to the fields to continue working, leaving Xie Zhuo and Xu Yan standing at the edge of the field.
