A while ago, Han Xiaoyu met Xu Yan in the field.
Compared to last year, Xu Yan has gained a little weight, and her cheeks are fuller, making her look more energetic and attractive.
Han Xiaoyu used to think that Xu Yan's beauty lacked soul, like an empty vase. He might be attracted by her pretty appearance at first sight, but after chatting for a few minutes, he would get annoyed.
He disliked this person who lacked assertiveness, was like a mute, and was always clinging to him.
But he couldn't simply reject her advances. Although his family was from the city, he had many siblings.
As the eldest son, he had only seen many of the foods in department stores and had never actually eaten them.
The time when Xu Yan followed him around was the best period of his life when he ate the most.
He watched as Xu Yan stood before Xie Zhuo, dressed in a uniquely tailored red floral dress, snow-white socks, and black calfskin shoes, looking radiant and beautiful.
Smile at him and wipe his sweat.
Looking again at Sun Jiarou, who was dressed in coarse cloth clothes and had several patches on her square-toed cloth shoes, squatting in the field and hoeing weeds, his disgust intensified.
But he can't do anything yet.
Even though Sun Guoan and Chen Guizhen's attitude towards Sun Jiarou is not as good as before, as long as he treats Sun Jiarou badly, he will not have a good outcome.
Han Xiaoyu once wanted to go back to the day Xu Yan fell into the water...
After working for several months straight, he finally had a break today because of the rain. He found Sun Jiarou's high school textbooks and planned to take a look at them.
I haven't read a book in so long that I can't remember many of the points clearly anymore.
But before he could read more than a few pages, he heard Chen Guizhen's voice.
"Hey, that explains why I didn't see anyone. Turns out they were hiding over here!"
Chen Guizhen's tone was tinged with anger. When she saw Han Xiaoyu looking in her direction, she threw the half-cracked sunflower seeds in her hand onto the ground. "With such heavy rain, didn't you even think to cover the chicken coop with something?"
Han Xiaoyu pursed his lips and remained silent.
"You've never eaten eggs from a chicken before?" Chen Guizhen persisted, "Does she really think she's some city pampered young master who can have everything done for her?"
Chen Guizhen has a loud voice. Sun Jiarou hadn't gotten up yet, but when she heard her voice, she quickly put on some clothes and slipped on her shoes before coming out.
"That sounds nice, but how many of your precious eggs have we actually eaten?" Sun Jiarou retorted, then glared at her nephew who was peeking over. "Didn't we give them all to your precious grandson?"
The boy who was leaning against the door heard her talking about herself, made a face at her, and then shrank back.
Hearing her words and looking at her expression, Chen Guizhen became even angrier. "What? Do you think I'm just obligated to support the two of you? I eat and live at home, and you're being treated badly if I ask you to do some chores?"
"Look at yourself! What time is it? Get up! Are you still on the long kang (heated brick bed)?"
“I shouldn’t have stopped you when your dad told you to go to the brigade leader to get the land for building a house. Now you’ve made a mistake by living here!”
As soon as Chen Guizhen finished speaking, Sun Jiarou immediately sneered.
"Do you think I don't know what you're thinking? You just think Han Xiaoyu is a strong laborer who can earn full work points, and you don't want him to leave, so why are you making such a fuss?"
"You have the nerve to say that we're just sitting around doing nothing? When have we ever not been working in the fields?"
"Look at my sister-in-law again. She's been out of confinement for two months now, and she's still sitting on the kang (a heated brick bed) wrapped in a quilt all day long. Anyone who didn't know better would think she was paralyzed!"
"What are you saying, you brat!" Chen Guizhen was truly furious.
She already disliked Han Xiaoyu and planned to find an excuse to scold him, but Sun Jiarou suddenly appeared and said those things.
She couldn't help herself and said a few more words to her, and then she heard Sun Jiarou's outrageous remarks.
Chen Guizhen was furious, but Sun Jiarou kept saying, "You can't pay Xiao Yu back now, but when he returns to the city, don't come crying to us for help. He'll be the richest man in the world!"
Fearing she might blurt out something she shouldn't, Han Xiaoyu frowned and pulled her aside, saying, "Don't say it."
Because of the heavy rain, many people didn't come over even though they heard the arguing.
It seems that only Sun's family members knew about this, but later some people said that Sun Jiarou's older brother slapped her, but no one saw it with their own eyes.
Xie Zhuo put down his book when it was time to make lunch. He went to check on Xu Yan in the room, but seeing that she was still asleep, he closed the door and went out.
Da Bao and Xiao Bao knew that their third aunt was sleeping in late today and hadn't gotten up yet. They didn't talk loudly at home, but followed Xie Zhuo to the kitchen, where they listened to the radio and helped start the fire.
Xu Yan woke up to the aroma of food coming from the kitchen, and when she opened her eyes, she met Xie Zhuo who was about to enter the room.
Xie Zhu smiled at her, then walked over and kissed her on the forehead. "Just in time for dinner."
Xu Yan glared at him.
Whenever they tried something new, Xie Zhuo would become a completely different person, extremely excited, and would always coax her to do it again after the first round.
Xu Yan was speechless with himself. Why was it that no matter what Xie Zhuo said, he just couldn't bring himself to refuse? He always did whatever Xie Zhuo said.
This made me feel uncomfortable somewhere when I woke up today.
By the time Xu Yan finished getting ready and went to the kitchen to eat, it was already twenty minutes later. Xie Zhuo didn't keep the two kids waiting, letting them eat first and leaving some food for Xu Yan separately.
