It was almost noon when Xu Yan and Xie Zhu arrived in the city.
The weather was dry and hot. Xu Yan's face was covered in sweat, and her clothes were also a little wet. She raised her hand to lift the straw hat on her head, and saw Xie Zhuo next to her suddenly walk quickly to the side of the road.
Xu Yan followed the gaze and discovered it was an ice pop vendor.
Although refrigerators existed in this era, they were not yet widespread throughout the country. Apart from places like port cities where the economy developed rapidly, most ordinary people had never even heard of refrigerators.
The popsicle vendor was pushing a bicycle with a square styrofoam box on the back seat. The box had two big characters written on it: "Popsicle".
Xie Zhuo was quick. He stood by the styrofoam box, said a few words to the man, and then took out some money from his pocket. The man opened the styrofoam box and gave him two popsicles.
Xie Zhuo quickly walked back.
"Quench your thirst," he said, handing the popsicle to Xu Yan.
Seeing that her face was flushed from the heat despite wearing a straw hat, I suggested, "Why don't you buy a bicycle? It would be more convenient to go into town that way."
Xu Yan turned to look at him, biting into her popsicle.
She realized that he had changed his mind about buying it because he saw that she was hot, and her heart was slightly moved, but she still waved her hand and said, "No need, I don't come to the city every day."
“But we still have to walk back after we finish shopping,” Xie Zhuo said, having found half a piece of cardboard from somewhere, and slapped Xu Yan a few times.
"It's a two-month period, and I might have to come back any day. Luckily, I have a bicycle ticket."
Xie Zhuo had previously stated that Xu Yan would be in charge of household matters after marriage, so he had no intention of forcibly going against Xu Yan's wishes to buy a bicycle.
Besides, he's been in Qingshan Brigade for so many years, he knows this road so well he could walk it with his eyes closed, so whether there's a bicycle or not doesn't matter.
He didn't want Xu Yan to work so hard.
It's not like we don't have money or tickets. Since we have them, why make her go through all this trouble?
He said yesterday that Xu Yan married him so she could enjoy a life of happiness.
Xu Yan initially thought it was unnecessary, but after thinking about it carefully, she realized that Xie Zhuo was right.
She doesn't go into town often and doesn't need a bicycle, but it's obvious that Xie Zhuo goes into town from time to time to sell mountain products. It's hot in the summer, and it's not easy for him to go back and forth. Buying a bicycle would definitely be more convenient.
Both of them subconsciously tried to see things from the other's perspective, and in the end, they reached a consensus through different means.
Buy a bicycle!
The second time they entered the department store, the sales staff all recognized them and were quite welcoming.
Especially the woman who sold fabric earlier, when she heard they wanted to buy a bicycle, she shouted directly towards the counter near the door.
"Huixia!"
"I heard you!"
A fair-skinned, slightly plump woman responded; she was probably named Huixia.
“There just happened to be a Phoenix brand car, so let’s give it to them,” said the aunt who sells fabric. “I liked this girl the moment I saw her; she’s so pretty.”
Wang Huixia smiled and said, "Who don't you say that the fabric is beautiful? Everyone who buys fabric from you says it's beautiful."
Xu Yan smiled.
“Oh, this one is different,” said the aunt selling cloth. “I’ve never seen one like this before. It’s just a bit thin, with those skinny arms.”
Xie Zhuo glanced at Xu Yan's arm as she spoke.
The young educated youth was indeed thin.
Not only was his face small, but his wrists looked as if they could be broken with a gentle twist. He pursed his lips and took the straw hat from Xu Yan's hand.
Xu Yan looked at him with a puzzled expression.
She didn't understand, but Wang Huixia, watching Xie Zhuo's actions, winked at another saleswoman next to her, and the two exchanged knowing smiles.
Then Wang Huixia looked at Xie Zhuo and asked, "Do you have tickets?"
“Yes,” Xie Zhuo said.
After speaking, he looked at Xu Yan to the side.
He gave Xu Yan the money and tickets he wanted to buy yesterday.
Wang Huixia and the saleswoman next to her exchanged another glance.
However, just as Xu Yan was handing the money and tickets to Wang Huixia, a commotion suddenly broke out at the entrance of the department store, and then three people walked in.
"I only want the Phoenix brand, I don't want any of the others," the youngest girl among the three said in a coquettish voice.
"Okay, here you go..."
The man next to her had only spoken half a sentence when his mother reached out and pinched his arm hard.
His voice even rose slightly when he said the last word.
“I’ll take Flying Pigeon,” the middle-aged woman glared to the side. “What’s with all this phoenix stuff? Does riding that Phoenix brand bike turn you into a phoenix? They’re the same thing, but the Phoenix brand is twenty or thirty yuan more expensive than the Flying Pigeon!”
The young woman immediately pouted.
"I want the Phoenix brand, Wang Chao, you promised me before."
When the man named Wang Chao saw that she was angry, he instinctively wanted to turn around and coax her, but his mother grabbed him.
He glanced at his mother.
"Let me tell you, if it weren't for..." The middle-aged woman stopped mid-sentence, perhaps feeling there were too many people around, and changed the subject, "I would never have let her into our house!"
"Mom!" Wang Chao immediately frowned and called out to his mother.
The middle-aged woman reached out and slapped him on the arm again. "I arranged everything for you, you troublemaker, and you end up getting yourself into trouble with such a shameless person!"
Feeling unsatisfied after hitting him once, she pinched him again.
Wang Chao grimaced and dodged to the side.
