The next day, when Xu Yan got up, there was no one on the kang (a heated brick bed).
If she hadn't vaguely sensed Xie Zhuo getting into bed before she fell asleep, she would have suspected he hadn't slept all night.
Summer is hot, and although the temperature drops at night, it's still hot, so most people just cover themselves with a sheet or cloth when they sleep.
The bed sheet that Xie Zhuo had covered was neatly folded and placed under the kang (a heated brick bed).
Xu Yan sat up and stared at it for a while before getting off the kang (heated brick bed), putting on her shoes, and going to wash up.
As soon as I stepped into the yard, I heard noises coming from the kitchen.
There's no need to guess; I know it's Xie Zhuo.
They really hit the jackpot!
Xu Yan sighed inwardly, then scooped water to wash her face. After a night, she had digested most of what had happened the previous night.
Even when Xie Zhuo called her to have breakfast, she smiled at him as usual and said, "Thank you for your hard work."
Xie Zhuo glanced at her, then turned around and went out to call Da Bao and Xiao Bao to get up and eat.
Breakfast was simple.
Each person received a boiled egg, a soft and sweet boiled sweet potato, a bowl of multigrain porridge, and some pickled vegetables that Xie Zhuo had prepared himself.
Xu Yan ate quite a lot.
Da Bao and Xiao Bao usually eat with their third uncle. Occasionally, if their third uncle gets up late, either it's just the two of them eating, or they don't even have breakfast. They'll eat some biscuits or peach shortbread.
One time when they were playing with Hei Ya, they couldn't help but tell her.
When others found out, they laughed at them, saying they must have been dreaming, how could anyone have so many peach shortbreads in their kitchen?
It's even less likely that you can eat candy whenever you want!
After hearing this, Da Bao retorted, "It's not like you can eat it whenever you want. Uncle San said you can only eat one a day at most, and you have to brush your teeth afterward."
After he said that, the other children laughed even harder.
“You can’t even make up a lie,” said Wu Yuzhen’s chubby son. “Why would you brush your teeth after finally getting to eat candy? Brushing your teeth will wash away the sweetness in your mouth, won’t it?”
Hearing him say that, the other children joined in the shouting.
"Exactly, only an idiot brushes their teeth!"
"Besides, my mom said that brushing your teeth will make your mouth bleed, and only those who want to suffer would brush their teeth every day!"
There were many of them, and they were all talking at once. Da Bao and Xiao Bao couldn't win the argument, and they didn't bother arguing with them.
Although the two children are not obsessive about cleanliness, they are quite conscious of hygiene after being cared for by their third uncle for so long.
Every day, you have to wash your feet before you can go to bed. After playing in the dirt outside, you have to wash your hair and change into clean clothes when you get home.
Uncle would also remind them to put a clean handkerchief in their pockets so they could wipe their noses with the handkerchief instead of their sleeves.
Song Jiabao and Zhang Gousheng often wiped their noses with their sleeves.
Both sleeves were rubbed black.
They don't play with Da Bao and Xiao Bao, and Da Bao and Xiao Bao also really dislike playing with them.
This is the first time the four of us have eaten breakfast together this morning, chatting and laughing.
Third Aunt kept smiling. Although Third Uncle didn't smile, he clearly enjoyed seeing Third Aunt smile too, and he had secretly looked at Third Aunt many times.
"Eat up, what are you thinking about at such a young age?"
Xu Yan swallowed the food in her mouth and reached out to pinch Xie Dabao's face.
Da Bao didn't answer her question, but smiled with her eyes crinkling, "I like Third Aunt."
Xu Yan burst into laughter.
From the moment she first visited Xie Zhuo's house, these two little brats showered her with boundless kindness.
She had worried that Xie Zhuo's two nephews might not like her after they got married, but it turned out she had worried too much.
Three of the four people were eating, talking, and laughing the whole time, while Xie Zhuo barely spoke and quickly finished his portion.
Then they heard the captain outside breaking a porcelain basin.
"Are we going to the fields this morning?" Xu Yan turned to look at Xie Zhuo.
"Okay," Xie Zhu nodded, and stood up to go inside to change his clothes.
Xu Yan had never seen people of this era be so particular.
You wear one set of clothes at home, and another set when you go out to work.
If she hadn't thoroughly researched Xie Zhuo's family and found that they weren't landlords in the past, but rather poor peasants, she would have suspected that this young master came from some unknown family.
When he came out wearing even more worn-out clothes, Xu Yan glanced at him.
Then I looked up at the sky again.
The sky was clear and the air was crisp, with not a cloud in sight.
It looks like another day that'll melt you in the sun.
"Do we really have to go?" Xu Yan walked over, took down the straw hat hanging on the wall, and handed it to him. Then she lowered her voice a little and said, "We don't need those work points, do we?"
Putting everything else aside, that ginseng alone sold for tens of thousands of yuan.
With prices these days, they could lie on the kang (heated brick bed) and eat every day for years.
Xie Zhuo glanced at the straw hat in Xu Yan's hand, took it from him, and suddenly laughed.
"What are you laughing about?" Xu Yan clicked his tongue.
Xie Zhuo was surprised that Xu Yan would say that, and he couldn't quite put his finger on it.
Overwhelmed with gratitude?
It's not that exaggerated.
At least one part of my heart was touched, like a tiny ant crawling across it.
It's a little itchy.
If Xu Yan knew that Xie Zhuo was moved by just one sentence, she would probably make a sarcastic remark.
Love-struck!
Purely love-struck!
It's an illness, it needs treatment!
"No," Xie Zhuo stopped smiling and shook his head slightly, "I still have to go, otherwise the brigade leader will definitely run home eight times a day."
