Chapter 88 The Small Box

Xu Yan has recently gotten into the habit of going for a walk outside every morning after getting up.

She didn't go out today because Xie Zhuo made breakfast, planning to go after the two little ones finished eating.

Although it's a bit far from the woods, it's very close to the river, and the air by the river in the morning must be quite fresh.

Da Bao and Xiao Bao ate and talked for a while, but they weren't slow. They finished eating in about ten minutes and started clearing the dishes in the kitchen.

Xu Yan cleaned the table, washed the dishes in the kitchen, and then led the two little ones to the riverbank.

Xu Yan had previously noticed that the two children rarely went out; they basically stayed at home, either playing in the dirt in a corner of the yard or playing with small wooden toys inside the house.

Of course, she understands.

After all, there are no other adults in Xie Zhuo's family. If the two children go out to play, no one will care if they get hurt.

The sun was already high in the sky. After Xu Yan took three straw hats and locked the courtyard gate, the three of them walked together towards the river.

"Last time, Uncle San caught a really big fish for us," Da Bao said, opening his arms wide and gesturing with an exaggerated length.

"Wow, that's amazing," Xu Yan said.

“Yes,” Xiao Bao nodded, “Third Uncle is really amazing.”

“Uncle’s grilled fish is so delicious,” Da Bao continued. “Xiao Bao and I ate a lot of it.”

When he said "a lot", he opened his arms and gestured.

Xu Yan was amused by his actions and couldn't stop smiling.

"Auntie, shall we go fishing today?" Da Bao asked.

"Hmm?" Xu Yan brushed the hair that had blown to the corner of her lips back.

"Fishing," Da Bao said, tilting his head back, "to catch a big fish so we can eat it when Uncle San comes back."

The suggestion is indeed quite good.

But Xu Yan knew she didn't have the skill. In her previous life, she had eaten plenty of fish, but had never actually fished.

The only time I did it myself was when I scooped the fish out of the fish tank at the supermarket.

"Let's go fishing!"

Before Xu Yan could even say whether or not to fish, Xiao Bao was already excitedly shouting from the side.

When they arrived at the riverbank, before Xu Yan could even remind them not to get too close to the shore, Da Bao and Xiao Bao grabbed her clothes.

"My third uncle said we can't get too close, or we'll be swept away by the water!"

Xu Yan: "..."

“Weren’t you two the loudest just now?” Xu Yan looked down at them. “Your change of attitude is too fast. Is it a special skill of your Xie family?”

Or was it your third uncle who taught you?

Da Bao and Xiao Bao didn't understand what kind of special skill she was talking about, but they just remembered what their third uncle had said.

My third uncle said that children should not go near the water when he is not around.

"You can't go, it's dangerous," Da Bao repeated earnestly.

"Okay, I won't go," Xu Yan said, since she didn't want to go either.

She led the two little ones for a walk along the riverbank pebbles, and only when the sun was getting higher did she take them to rest under the shade of a tree.

I don't know if all children like to dig in the dirt, but after sitting under the tree for a while, Da Bao and Xiao Bao couldn't sit still anymore and started digging and picking at things.

Fortunately, Xu Yan brought a basket and a shovel with her when she came out.

Her original plan was to walk around for a while and then go to the field to help Xie Zhuo weed, so that she could finish before the sun got too hot and go home.

Now that I see Da Bao and the others digging in the soil with their fingers, I'll give them the small shovel.

“I’m going to dig up a big earthworm,” Da Bao said. “When Uncle San comes, we can use the earthworm to fish for food.”

"Xiao Bao wants some too," Xiao Bao chimed in from the side.

Xu Yan sat to the side, watching the two of them play.

I don't know if it's because the two little ones don't play with other children their age much, but the younger one is very quiet. Even though he's only a few months younger than the older one, his ability to express himself is nowhere near as good.

Most of the time, he would just agree with Da Bao after he finished speaking.

This is not a good sign.

Xu Yan observed the two of them for a while longer and decided that she would bring up the matter of sending the two children to school with Xie Zhuo after she met him.

According to what she learned from the book, Qingshan Brigade did have a primary school.

Although many villagers felt that going to school was useless and that it was better to go to the fields to earn some work points.

However, some people with more open-minded views believe that no matter what, children should be taught to recognize a few words so they won't be illiterate.

Others who send their children to school have more to think about.

In the brigade, those who could become village chiefs, secretaries, and accountants were all literate. Those who couldn't read or write were destined to be laborers. Every day, the village chief would stand behind them and urge them to work, hoping that their children could suffer less in the future and become village chiefs or something.

Xu Yan was thinking seriously when she suddenly heard Da Bao's voice.

"Third Aunt, I didn't find any earthworms, but I found something hard," Da Bao shouted.

Xu Yan snapped back to reality instantly.

“Look, it’s hard,” Da Bao poked at it again with the shovel.

Xu Yan then got up and squatted down to take a look.

The "hard thing" in Da Bao's mouth was a small gray-brown box, and it was unknown how long it had been buried there.

Xu Yan looked around; there was no one else besides the three of them.

"Come on, give the shovel to your third aunt, let her see what it is."

Xu Yan took the shovel from Da Bao and dug out the small box. She didn't know what was inside the box, but it was quite heavy. She had some effort to take it out of the small pit.
