Chapter 97 Prelude to the Storm

Xu Yan had already written about these things in the letter.

On the very first day she decided to marry Xie Zhuo, she wrote a letter, but she never expected that the original owner's parents would arrive so quickly.

She calculated the time.

They packed up and came over almost the same day her letter arrived.

Xu Yan had never experienced parental love since childhood. Although she envied others who did, she didn't feel it very strongly. But today, when Chen Lihua's tears fell on the back of her hand, she suddenly felt extremely envious of that kind of love.

She could feel the love that the original owner's parents had for her, even though it wasn't directed at her.

But she is Xu Yan now; even if the core inside has changed, the person is still the same.

So calling her "Mom" is quite natural.

Seeing the critical look in Chen Lihua's eyes when she met Xie Zhuo's gaze, he still reached out and grabbed her arm, shook it, and changed the subject, "Mom, how did you get here?"

“This small county town is quite remote,” Chen Lihua said, turning her gaze away and beginning to tell Xu Yan how the two of them had found their way here.

Xu Yan listened and also felt that the old couple had really had a hard time.

The bitterness she had suppressed before slowly resurfaced.

“However,” Chen Lihua suddenly changed the subject.

"Hmm?" Xu Yan sniffed.

“When we came here, we heard from the villagers that,” Chen Lihua glanced at Xie Zhuo, who was pouring water for them, “that Xie Laosan married a living ancestor.”

Xu Yan's tears vanished instantly.

"..."

Unexpectedly, the villagers secretly gave her a nickname.

“You have indeed changed a bit since I last saw you,” Chen Lihua said, looking at her carefully.

Xu Yan's heart tightened immediately.

“It seems that leaving my parents has indeed made me grow up,” Chen Lihua said.

Xu Cangsong nodded in agreement.

Xu Yan breathed a sigh of relief.

"Xie Zhuo, stop busying yourself and sit down."

Chen Lihua suddenly spoke to Xie Zhuo, who quickly responded and sat down on a chair.

Although Xie Zhuo is usually quite talkative, especially when he's talking to the aunties and uncles in the village, he feels incredibly nervous in front of Xu Yan's parents. He thought for a long time but couldn't come up with any good topics to talk about.

All they could do was shut up and sit quietly.

Seeing that their third uncle had obediently sat down, Da Bao and Xiao Bao also obediently leaned against him.

It's said that children are very sensitive to adults' emotions, and they probably realized that the two people who came to visit didn't like the three of them very much, so they didn't say a word from beginning to end.

It looks like three gourds with saw-off mouths.

Although Chen Lihua didn't think much of Xie Zhuo, she really liked children.

Looking at Da Bao and Xiao Bao, she took out a handful of candy from her pocket and waved to them, "Come here, Grandma will give you candy."

Da Bao and Xiao Bao glanced at Xie Zhuo, and seeing Xie Zhuo nod, they took a few steps forward, took the candy from Chen Lihua's hand, and said sweetly in their little voices, "Thank you, Grandma."

"Oh my," Chen Lihua immediately laughed, "You two are so polite."

Many city kids, when they see candy, don't necessarily wait for an adult's permission before taking the candy and saying thank you.

Because of this small gesture, Chen Lihua's attitude towards Xie Zhuo improved a little.

If someone can teach their child to be so polite, then that person is probably not unreasonable.

After Da Bao and Xiao Bao took the candy, they returned to Xie Zhuo's side. Instead of immediately opening and eating the candy, they pried open Xie Zhuo's hand and put a few pieces into his hand as well.

“Now Uncle San has candy too,” Da Bao said.

Xie Zhuo was taken aback.

He reached out and pinched the tips of the two little ones' noses. "You two can eat, your third uncle won't."

“But…” Da Bao tilted his little head, his voice still innocent, “We all have candy, but Uncle San doesn’t have any. Uncle San will be unhappy.”

His words stunned not only Xie Zhuo, but also Xu Cangsong, who couldn't help but glance at Xie Zhuo.

Then, his hand instinctively reached into his pocket.

With so many people present, Xie Zhuo was the only one without candy, which was indeed a bit pitiful.

Chen Lihua loved children, and seeing how sensible the two of them were, she immediately took out all the candy from her pocket. "Here, these are for your third uncle, and you two can take the rest."

After saying that, seeing that Xie Zhuo was still standing there in a daze, Chen Lihua called out to him again, "Xie Zhuo."

Xie Zhuo finally snapped out of his daze, and while taking the candy, he briefly exchanged a glance with Xu Yan.

Xu Yan winked at him.

Because of a few actions and words from Da Bao and Xiao Bao, Xu Yan's parents were finally able to talk to Xie Zhuo properly.

When she heard him say that only the three of them were left in the family, Chen Lihua sighed.

Before they arrived, all they knew was that their daughter suddenly wanted to break off her engagement with Han Xiaoyu and marry a man from the village. They thought their silly daughter had probably been deceived.

That's why I packed my things and rushed over here.

When I inquired about Xie Zhuo in the village, I never heard anyone mention anything about her daughter and Han Xiaoyu, so I felt something was off.

After all, the issue of exchanging brides is a topic of conversation for every household, not just in the village, but even in the city.

Why did the daughter not marry Han Xiaoyu, but instead marry Xie Zhuo from the village? Everyone else keeps quiet about this.

Unless, of course, no one knows anything about their relationship.

"Me and him..."

Xu Yan glanced at Xie Zhuo, and seeing that he didn't have any extra expression, she turned her gaze back to Chen Lihua and Xu Cangsong.
